2026 NFL Power Rankings Before Preseason Week 1

The defending champion Seattle Seahawks own the trophy. The Los Angeles Rams own the strongest projection. That tension defines Football Nation's first complete 2026 power ranking before Preseason Week 1: honor what just happened, but rank what each team is most likely to become next.
This is not a standings forecast disguised as certainty. It is a current snapshot built from 2025 performance, quarterback stability, roster strength, coaching continuity and fresh external benchmarks. ESPN's May panel placed Seattle first, while its June Football Power Index made the Rams the Super Bowl favorite at 14.9 percent. The disagreement is useful, because it exposes where projection and accomplishment pull in different directions.
Tier 1: the teams with a real championship case
1. Los Angeles Rams. The Rams get the narrow top spot because the offense provides a stable weekly floor and the defense added premium talent. ESPN's FPI makes Los Angeles its clear Super Bowl favorite. That is a projection, not a guarantee, but the roster has the fewest obvious structural weaknesses entering preseason.
2. Seattle Seahawks. Seattle beat the Rams in the NFC title game and won Super Bowl LX, so second place is not a dismissal. The case for mild regression is that championship defense can fluctuate more than elite offense. The rebuttal is simple: most of the unit returns, Mike Macdonald remains in control and Seattle just proved its style travels through January.

3. Buffalo Bills. An elite quarterback and ESPN's second-highest title probability keep Buffalo near the front. The burden is no longer proving regular-season quality; it is converting enough high-leverage possessions against the AFC's deepest opponents.
4. Baltimore Ravens. Lamar Jackson keeps the ceiling enormous, and ESPN projects Baltimore with the league's third-best Super Bowl chance. A new coaching structure introduces uncertainty, but the core talent still belongs in the inner circle.
5. Philadelphia Eagles. Philadelphia's roster remains strong enough to win either way. The key question is whether turnover and transition around the roster reduce its week-to-week margin. Until games supply evidence, the Eagles stay in the top five.
Tier 2: strong playoff teams with one major question
6. San Francisco 49ers. The NFC West is brutally concentrated, yet San Francisco still carries a top-five FPI profile. Health and divisional resistance matter, but the baseline remains contender level.
7. Detroit Lions. ESPN's model gives Detroit a favorable schedule and the best odds in the NFC North. The Lions need their efficiency to survive another year of personnel and coaching adjustment, but the path is real.
8. Green Bay Packers. Green Bay ranks as ESPN's strongest NFC North team by power rating, even if Detroit has slightly better division odds. That split captures the Packers perfectly: high-end quality, demanding schedule.
9. Kansas City Chiefs. Patrick Mahomes makes ninth feel dangerous. ESPN notes he is returning from a torn ACL and LCL, and its preseason model ranks Kansas City lower than at any point since his first year as starter. Until his availability and movement are clearer, restraint is warranted.
10. Denver Broncos. Denver earned the AFC's top seed last season, but one-score performance and Bo Nix's ankle recovery create regression risk. The defense keeps the floor high enough for the top 10.
Tier 3: playoff range, from dangerous to volatile
11. Los Angeles Chargers; 12. Cincinnati Bengals; 13. Houston Texans; 14. New England Patriots; 15. Dallas Cowboys; 16. Jacksonville Jaguars; 17. Pittsburgh Steelers; 18. Chicago Bears.
The Chargers are the most balanced riser in this tier, and ESPN gives them a 65.1 percent playoff probability. Cincinnati has a title-level offensive ceiling when healthy. Houston owns a defense and quarterback combination that can outplay this slot. New England reached Super Bowl LX and added A.J. Brown, but ESPN's model is skeptical that last season's path repeats.
Dallas has enough top-end talent to climb quickly, while Jacksonville's projection is stronger than its recent reputation. Pittsburgh remains structurally competitive but must answer its passing-game questions. Chicago broke through in 2025; now it must prove that improvement can survive a tougher schedule and less turnover luck.

Tier 4: credible upside, incomplete proof
19. Minnesota Vikings; 20. Tampa Bay Buccaneers; 21. Indianapolis Colts; 22. Carolina Panthers; 23. Washington Commanders; 24. Atlanta Falcons; 25. New York Giants; 26. New Orleans Saints.
Every team here can make this ranking look foolish. Minnesota and Tampa Bay have enough infrastructure to jump into the playoff tier. Indianapolis and Carolina need quarterback play to turn promise into a weekly identity. Washington's next step is sustaining efficiency against a first-place caliber schedule. Atlanta, New York and New Orleans need more complete evidence before moving higher.
Tier 5: the preseason must change the conversation
27. Las Vegas Raiders; 28. Arizona Cardinals; 29. Cleveland Browns; 30. Miami Dolphins; 31. New York Jets; 32. Tennessee Titans.
These are not predictions of hopeless seasons. They are statements about present uncertainty. Miami starts over with a new head coach, general manager and quarterback. The Jets sit only slightly ahead in ESPN's FPI. Tennessee has the longest climb in this snapshot, while Cleveland, Arizona and Las Vegas need a stable offensive answer to move out of the bottom six.
What can move the ranking
Preseason results matter less than role clarity. A healthy Mahomes would move Kansas City. Efficient first-team line play could push the Chargers or Texans upward. Seattle can reclaim No. 1 by showing its defense has retained its communication and pressure discipline. The Rams can keep the spot by looking like a team whose major additions already fit.
