Aaron Banks Questionable vs. Lions: Packers O-Line and Fantasy Impact
Green Bay starting left guard Aaron Banks is officially questionable for Sunday’s Week 7 road game against Detroit after being limited in all three practices with knee and toe injuries. The designation matters well beyond one lineup spot: the Lions lead the NFL with 20 sacks despite already having their bye.
Banks is listed atop Green Bay’s depth chart at left guard, with veteran Laken Tomlinson behind him. If Banks cannot go—or is active but limited—the Packers may have to alter both their protection plan for Jordan Love and the interior blocking structure for a run game averaging only 2.9 yards per carry.
For fantasy managers, the decision creates a split signal. Detroit’s pressure is a real downgrade for Green Bay’s backfield and pass protection, but the Lions have also allowed 297.4 passing yards per game, leaving upside for Love, Christian Watson and Matthew Golden.
What Aaron Banks’ status changes
The key issue is continuity. Green Bay’s depth chart identifies Banks as the starting left guard and Tomlinson as his direct backup. A clean inactive decision would make the substitution straightforward; an active-but-limited Banks would create more uncertainty because Green Bay could rotate, shorten his workload or keep extra protection options available.
Interior protection is especially important against Detroit because Alim McNeill already has 3.5 sacks, while edge rushers D.J. Wonnum and Aidan Hutchinson have five and four, respectively. Pressure that arrives through the A-gap can force Love off his spot before downfield concepts develop.
Why Detroit’s pass rush is the central matchup
The Lions’ 20 sacks are the most in the league. Love has been sacked 13 times through six games, though his overall production remains strong: 1,684 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, four interceptions and a 91.8 passer rating.
Detroit’s defense is aggressive, but it is not airtight. Green Bay’s official matchup coverage notes that the Lions have surrendered a league-high 297.4 passing yards per game. That creates a classic boom-or-bust setup: Detroit can wreck drives with pressure, while Green Bay can punish single coverage if the line gives Love enough time.
Fantasy football impact
Jordan Love: Keep him in most lineups. The opponent’s sack production lowers his floor if Banks sits, but Detroit’s vulnerable secondary preserves multi-touchdown upside. Love’s six career starts against the Lions have produced 1,415 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and three interceptions.
Josh Jacobs and the Packers’ running backs: Treat the backfield as more volatile. Jacobs has been activated from the commissioner’s exempt list and is eligible, but Green Bay had not publicly declared his Week 7 playing status by Saturday morning. Banks’ availability would improve the outlook for inside runs, while an absence would add another obstacle to a rushing attack with 359 yards on 125 carries.
Christian Watson and Matthew Golden: Both remain upside plays. Watson has 538 receiving yards and six touchdowns, while Golden has 501 yards and three scores. Their ability to win downfield is the clearest counter to Detroit’s pressure, especially if Green Bay uses play action and quick protection answers.
Lions D/ST: Banks being inactive would be a meaningful upgrade. Detroit already leads the league in sacks, and a backup left guard would give the front another pressure point. If Banks is active without a snap restriction, Detroit’s fantasy ceiling remains attractive but the matchup becomes less one-sided.
The strongest counterargument
Banks’ questionable tag is not the same as being ruled out, and Tomlinson is an experienced replacement. Green Bay also has reasons to lean into the passing matchup instead of forcing a struggling ground game. If the Packers protect with quick throws, chips and play-action movement, they can limit the damage even without perfect interior continuity.
There is also evidence that Love handles this opponent well. In three career starts at Ford Field, he has thrown for 708 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions with a 123.4 passer rating. That history does not erase the protection concern, but it argues against benching him solely because of Banks’ status.
What to watch before kickoff
The inactive list: It will provide the definitive answer roughly 90 minutes before kickoff. Fantasy managers should check Banks and Jacobs together because the combination determines how much confidence to place in Green Bay’s inside run game.
Green Bay’s first protection series: If Tomlinson starts, watch whether the Packers slide help left, use more tight-end chips or speed up Love’s release. Those choices will reveal how aggressively Detroit can attack the replacement.
Early run efficiency: The Packers’ 2.9-yard rushing average makes wasted early-down carries costly. If Green Bay cannot create movement inside, the offense may shift volume toward Love and the receivers.
Bottom line
Banks is one of the most consequential questionable players in Packers-Lions because his status affects the quarterback, the backfield and both fantasy defenses. Love and Green Bay’s receivers still carry strong upside against Detroit’s secondary, but Banks sitting would raise the sack risk, lower the rushing-game floor and make the Lions D/ST a stronger Week 7 play.
