Andy Dalton Declines Eagles Return, Report Says: McKee and Milton Impact
The Philadelphia Eagles tried to bring Andy Dalton back after placing Jalen Hurts on injured reserve, but the veteran quarterback declined the offer, according to Pro Football Talk. No destination had been announced when this article was published. The immediate football consequence is clear: Philadelphia must prepare Tanner McKee, Joe Milton III and rookie Cole Payton for the next stretch without the experienced fallback it had already released.
Pro Football Talk reported Sunday night that the Eagles wanted Dalton back, that he “politely declined,” and that he was expected to sign with another team soon. Until Dalton or a club announces that agreement, his next destination remains a report rather than a completed transaction.
How the Eagles reached this quarterback reset
Philadelphia acquired Dalton from Carolina on March 24 for a 2027 seventh-round pick. He arrived with 169 career regular-season starts and opened the season as Hurts’ primary backup. His Eagles tenure changed after he threw an interception on his only pass attempt in a Week 3 loss at Chicago, and Philadelphia released him on October 9.
The Eagles then signed Joe Milton III from the Dallas Cowboys’ practice squad on October 16. Because Philadelphia signed him away from another practice squad, Milton had to join the 53-man roster. The move supplied another arm after Hurts was diagnosed with a superficial blood clot in his left calf.
Philadelphia placed Hurts on injured reserve on October 17. He must miss at least four games, including the Week 7 matchup with Dallas. Reuters reported that the Eagles believe the condition is treatable, but Hurts’ medical team will determine when he can return. That medical timeline matters more than the minimum injured-reserve window.
Tanner McKee remains the practical Week 7 starter
McKee started Sunday’s 25-14 loss to Carolina and completed his season debut with 215 passing yards and one touchdown. The touchdown was a 19-yard fourth-quarter throw to DeVonta Smith. Philadelphia also punted eight times and produced 17 first downs, so the passing total should not be mistaken for an efficient offensive performance.
Dalton declining a return does not automatically elevate Milton into a competition with McKee. It removes the most experienced short-term alternative. McKee has the system familiarity, received the Week 6 start and now gets a full week to prepare for Dallas. Barring a new signing or a sharp change in practice work, he is the logical starter for Week 7.
The pressure is on Philadelphia’s offensive staff to make the plan easier for McKee: more early-down efficiency, defined throws to Smith and Dallas Goedert, and fewer obvious passing situations. The Eagles cannot rely on Hurts’ designed rushing value or his ability to turn broken plays into first downs, so protection and down-to-down structure become more important.
What Joe Milton and Cole Payton offer
Milton is the higher-upside developmental option, not a proven replacement. He did not play a snap for Dallas this season before the Eagles signed him. In four relief appearances for the Cowboys in 2025, he completed 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. His strongest NFL showing remains a 241-yard, two-touchdown performance for New England in the 2024 regular-season finale, including one rushing score.
Payton is the rookie in the room. Philadelphia used him as McKee’s backup against Carolina while Milton was the emergency third quarterback, according to the Sunday report. That order can change once Milton has more time in the playbook, but neither player should be projected ahead of McKee without evidence from practice, roster moves or team comments.
The Eagles could still add another veteran. Dalton’s reported decision also creates a wider league effect because his expected signing elsewhere may push another quarterback off a roster. Philadelphia could then evaluate that player, but that is only a possible chain reaction—not a current transaction.
Fantasy football impact
McKee is a QB2 or Superflex option, not a preferred one-quarterback-league starter. His 215 yards and one score against Carolina provide a usable floor, but eight punts and a 25-14 loss show the ceiling risk. Dallas entered Week 6 with defensive weaknesses, yet the Eagles still need to prove they can sustain drives without Hurts.
Smith remains the safest Philadelphia pass catcher because he can win quickly and already converted McKee’s only touchdown against Carolina. Goedert stays in the low-end TE1 conversation because middle-of-the-field targets can help a backup quarterback. Both projections carry more volatility than they would with Hurts.
Milton is a watch-list name in dynasty and very deep Superflex leagues. He is not a standard redraft add while McKee is starting and before Milton earns an active backup role. Payton belongs on the same developmental watch list rather than in weekly lineups.
Dalton’s eventual destination could matter in deep two-quarterback formats, but fantasy managers should wait for an official signing and a clear depth-chart role. A veteran joining a team does not automatically mean he will start.
What to monitor next
The next checkpoints are straightforward: Dalton’s official destination; whether Philadelphia adds another veteran; Milton’s practice participation; the Week 7 quarterback order; and the Eagles’ offensive-line and skill-position injury report. Hurts’ return should be treated as a medical decision, not a four-game countdown.
Philadelphia hosts Dallas on Monday, October 26. McKee currently has the clearest path to the start, but the quarterback room remains unsettled enough that every roster move and practice report matters.
