Audric Estimé Returns: Why the Saints Need a Defined Run Game Role

New Orleans did not claim Audric Estimé to solve a seven game rushing problem by himself. The move matters because it adds a familiar 227 pound back one day after the Saints changed how their staff builds the run game. The useful question is not whether Estimé becomes the starter. It is whether New Orleans can define a small role that helps the front play with better timing and gives the backfield a reliable downhill answer.

Sources and team data were checked November 4, 2026 at 10:16 a.m. Central. New Orleans entered Week 9 with 602 rushing yards on 171 attempts, or 3.5 yards per carry. The club's official reporting listed that production at 86 yards per game and 28th in the NFL. Those numbers are the comparison period for this analysis.

What the Saints actually changed

The Saints announced Tuesday that they claimed Estimé off waivers from Cleveland and terminated kicker Daniel Carlson's contract. Estimé appeared once for the Browns, carrying nine times for 19 yards and one touchdown. He also spent time on Minnesota's practice squad after New Orleans reached an injury settlement with him in September.

The transaction brings back a player who knows the organization and produced 301 yards from scrimmage in seven games for the Saints in 2025. He carried 46 times for 198 yards and a touchdown, then added 12 receptions for 103 yards. Familiarity can reduce the installation burden, but it does not prove that he knows every current protection check or that he will be active Sunday.

Why this is a structure story, not a backfield rescue

Head coach Kellen Moore changed the staff workflow after the bye. Run game coordinator T.J. Paganetti was dismissed, offensive line coach Brendan Nugent will lead the weekly run structure, and running backs coach Joel Thomas will continue to handle situational input. Moore said the goal is a cleaner flow and sequence for the staff. Center Erik McCoy placed the emphasis on communication and getting every blocker on the same page.

The weekly splits explain why process matters. New Orleans ran for 148 yards against Las Vegas and 175 against the Giants, but it also posted 65 against Baltimore, 50 against Atlanta, 55 against Minnesota and only 18 on 17 attempts against Pittsburgh. A new runner cannot repair identification, combination blocks, timing and second level leverage. He can make a defined concept easier to evaluate.

A role that makes football sense

Opinion: the cleanest first use is a compact package built around downhill runs, short yardage and protection assignments the staff can verify during the week. Estimé's size gives New Orleans a different body type for pressing an interior track, forcing linebackers to declare and finishing behind square pads. The diagram above shows the teaching sequence: press the intended gap, make the linebacker commit, then cut only when the block creates daylight.

That does not require a depth chart promotion. A role package can be evaluated through alignment, ball security, pass protection and special teams work before the Saints expand it. If the offense treats the claim as a reason to rotate backs without a clear purpose, the change could add complexity to a unit already trying to improve communication.

Fantasy consequence

Estimé should remain on the watch list rather than in an automatic fantasy lineup. Kendre Miller leads the Saints with 159 rushing yards, Alvin Kamara has 125, Travis Etienne Jr. has 128 on 30 attempts but remains on injured reserve, and CJ Donaldson has 81 on 17 carries. The first Week 9 injury report and any return designation will change the available touch tree.

In full PPR formats, Estimé's 12 receptions for 103 yards in 2025 show that he is not strictly a zero target runner, but that old sample does not establish a 2026 receiving role. Managers should require a game day active designation, a meaningful snap share and at least one repeatable situation such as short yardage or a four minute offense before assigning standalone value.

The strongest counterargument

The waiver claim may simply restore familiar depth after a series of injuries and transactions. New Orleans can improve its run game without giving Estimé meaningful touches, especially if Kamara, Miller, Donaldson or Etienne is ahead in the weekly plan. The 18 yard performance in Pittsburgh also points to a blocking and communication failure that no individual runner fixes.

That counterargument is why the transaction should be judged by function rather than name recognition. If Estimé helps the Saints get downhill on schedule, protect Tyler Shough and keep the offense out of long third downs, the claim has value even without a large box score.

Next checkpoint

Watch Wednesday's injury report, practice participation and the Sunday active list. Then track which back handles the first short yardage snap, whether the Saints use a true downhill track, and whether the offensive line creates movement before the cut. Those observations will show whether Estimé is part of the reset or simply experienced insurance.
