Football Nation original matchup cover for Bengals at Falcons in Madrid.

Football Nation answer: Cincinnati has the clearer path in Madrid because Joe Burrow and his receivers can punish Atlanta on money downs, while the Falcons arrive needing a clean, run centered game after a four interception shutout loss. The travel variable and Bijan Robinson give Atlanta a real upset route, but our early call is Bengals 31, Falcons 24. The most important uncertainty is the first Week 9 practice report, especially for Atlanta's secondary and backfield.

Game details and current context

  • Matchup: Cincinnati Bengals at Atlanta Falcons, NFL Week 9.

  • Date and time: Sunday, November 8, 2026 at 8:30 AM CST, which is 3:30 PM in Madrid.

  • Venue: Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, Spain.

  • Broadcast: NFL Network. NFL Plus availability is subject to the service's live game rules.

  • Records through Week 8: Cincinnati 5 and 2; Atlanta 3 and 5.

Both teams have a normal Sunday to Sunday competitive interval, but the international trip changes preparation. Cincinnati comes in after a 43 to 36 overtime win over Tennessee. Atlanta comes in after a 16 to 0 loss at Tampa Bay. The Bengals must turn quickly from a 70 yard overtime winning drive to travel logistics, while Atlanta must repair its passing operation without abandoning the offense's best player.

Football Nation's full Week 8 context: Burrow and Cincinnati won a 43 to 36 overtime shootout.

What the numbers say

The contrast is sharp. Cincinnati has produced 2,581 yards at 5.8 yards per play and converted 46 of 87 third downs, a 52.9 percent rate. Burrow has completed 195 of 267 passes for 2,115 yards, 20 touchdowns and six interceptions. He is averaging 7.9 yards per attempt with a 111.6 passer rating. Tee Higgins has 726 receiving yards, Ja'Marr Chase has 492, and Mike Gesicki has six touchdown catches.

Atlanta has 2,585 total yards at 5.3 per play, but only 32 conversions on 96 third downs, or 33.3 percent. Michael Penix Jr. has 1,282 passing yards, nine touchdowns and five interceptions. Bijan Robinson remains the stabilizer with 780 rushing yards at 5.2 per carry plus 203 receiving yards. Drake London leads the Falcons with 624 receiving yards.

The clearest swing statistic is possession value. Cincinnati owns a plus one turnover margin. Atlanta is minus seven. A one possession international game can flip on a short field, and the Falcons cannot ask their defense to repeatedly defend Burrow after turnovers.

Quarterback and coverage matchup

Burrow is coming off a 462 yard, five touchdown game in which he also threw three interceptions. The positive is obvious: Cincinnati can create answers at every level with Chase, Higgins and Gesicki. The caution is just as important. Burrow was forced to carry a pass heavy comeback, and Atlanta's upset chance rises if its pressure can make him hold the ball or if disguised coverage produces another takeaway.

Penix faces a different problem. He threw four interceptions in the shutout loss at Tampa Bay, and Atlanta generated only 224 net yards. The correction should begin with early down structure rather than asking him to win another high volume dropback game. Play action, designed movement and throws built from Robinson's gravity can help Penix regain rhythm. Cincinnati has 23 defensive sacks, so long third downs invite exactly the game the Bengals want.

Trenches and run game

Cincinnati's offensive line has allowed 13 sacks, a strong enough foundation for its passing identity. The bigger offensive weakness is a run game averaging 3.7 yards per carry. Chase Brown has 340 rushing yards and one touchdown. If Atlanta can play lighter boxes without being punished on the ground, it can devote more resources to Burrow's route combinations.

Atlanta's best counter is Robinson. Cincinnati has allowed 856 rushing yards at 4.8 per carry. The Falcons need Robinson touches that create second and medium, keep Burrow on the sideline and reduce Penix's exposure to obvious passing downs. Cincinnati's answer is to win first down and force Atlanta's 33.3 percent third down offense to sustain drives.

Injuries and availability

The Week 9 practice reports were not yet available at the reporting cutoff. Week 8 statuses are watch list context, not Week 9 designations. Cincinnati ruled safety Kyle Dugger out with a quadriceps injury before the Tennessee game. Atlanta ruled running back Brian Robinson Jr. out with a hamstring injury and listed several defenders as questionable, including Divine Deablo, Samson Ebukam and Avieon Terrell.

Football Nation is tracking Atlanta's current availability here: Falcons rule out Zachariah Branch and Samson Ebukam for Week 9.

Expected replacement roles depend on the new practice reports. Khalil Herbert was elevated when Brian Robinson missed Week 8. Atlanta's defensive rotation could again be tested if its questionable players do not progress. The next reliable checkpoint is each club's first official Week 9 practice report, followed by Friday game designations and Sunday inactives.

Fantasy football outlook

Scoring format: half point PPR with standard four point passing touchdowns.

  • Start Joe Burrow. The matchup and his receiving depth preserve a strong ceiling, though last week's three interceptions are the counterargument.

  • Start Ja'Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Both are volume driven starters. Higgins enters with the stronger yardage total, while Chase has six receiving touchdowns.

  • Start Bijan Robinson. His rushing and receiving work is Atlanta's clearest way to control the game.

  • Start Drake London as a wide receiver two if active. Atlanta may need volume, but Penix's turnover risk lowers the efficiency floor.

  • Use Mike Gesicki as a touchdown sensitive tight end starter. Six touchdowns matter, but his weekly catch volume is less stable than the scoring total.

  • Use Kyle Pitts as a tight end starter with some volatility. His four touchdowns keep him involved near the goal line.

  • Treat Michael Penix Jr. as a superflex option, not a preferred one quarterback league start, until the offense shows a cleaner passing process.

  • Brian Robinson Jr. is a bench hold pending the hamstring update. Khalil Herbert is the contingency name if Robinson remains unavailable.

Weather and market status

A useful game specific forecast is not yet close enough to kickoff to carry material weight. Recheck Madrid conditions, wind and the stadium's roof operating plan on Saturday and again Sunday morning. Football Nation did not verify an executable public spread, total or moneyline at the reporting cutoff, so no price is presented. Markets remain pending rather than estimated. The analysis changes toward Atlanta if Cincinnati becomes a road favorite of more than a touchdown and the Falcons' defensive availability improves.

Path to win for each team

Cincinnati's path: protect Burrow, attack the intermediate middle with its receiver and tight end depth, and turn Atlanta's third down weakness into extra possessions. A modest contribution from the run game would keep the Falcons from playing every snap for the pass.

Atlanta's path: build the game around Robinson, keep Penix out of long down and distance, and win the turnover battle. The Falcons need pressure without excessive blitzing because Burrow can identify isolated coverage before the snap.

Football Nation prediction

Prediction: Bengals 31, Falcons 24. Cincinnati has the more reliable quarterback, the better third down offense and the stronger passing answers. The strongest counterargument is that international travel plus Atlanta's run game can shrink the contest and create a one possession finish. Atlanta's upset path is at least one early takeaway, more than 25 Robinson touches and a clean red zone performance. The fact that would change the call is a major Cincinnati offensive line or receiver absence combined with a healthier Atlanta defense.

Game day checklist

  • Confirm the final Friday injury report and any Saturday roster elevations.

  • Check the official inactive list about 90 minutes before kickoff.

  • Recheck Madrid wind, precipitation and the stadium roof plan.

  • Confirm the opening offensive line combinations and Atlanta's secondary availability.

  • Check the first verified market numbers and any late movement without treating a published snapshot as a live executable quote.

  • Update fantasy calls if Brian Robinson Jr., Drake London or a primary Cincinnati receiver receives a limiting designation.
