Broncos at 49ers Week 4 Guide: Injuries, Odds, Props, Fantasy and Prediction

San Francisco owns the more reliable Week 4 offensive path, but Denver has a real upset route against a depleted 49ers defensive front. Football Nation picks the 49ers 30 to 24 because their ground efficiency and early down passing options should keep Brock Purdy out of too many obvious dropback situations. The confidence level stays moderate. Denver has won two straight comeback games, San Francisco is missing three defensive linemen, and Sunday heat will test both rotations.

For fantasy managers, Christian McCaffrey remains the strongest start in the game, while J.K. Dobbins, Courtland Sutton and Jaylen Waddle are matchup dependent flex plays in full PPR formats. Mike Evans is a game time decision and should not be locked into a lineup without an active designation. Bettors should treat every number below as a snapshot, not a promise: the market, inactive list and weather remain the final checkpoints.

Game details, records and context

  • Matchup: Denver Broncos at San Francisco 49ers, NFL Week 4.

  • Date and kickoff: Sunday, October 4, 2026 at 3:25 p.m. Central, 1:25 p.m. Pacific.

  • Venue: Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.

  • Television and streaming: CBS, with Paramount Plus availability where the local broadcast is carried.

  • Records: Denver is 2 and 1 in the AFC West. San Francisco is 3 and 0 and has already earned two NFC West wins.

Denver arrives after erasing a 16 point halftime deficit to beat the Los Angeles Rams 30 to 26. The Broncos scored all 30 points after halftime, and safety Talanoa Hufanga changed the game with a 66 yard interception return. The win was Denver's second consecutive comeback, but the offense still produced only 257 total yards and went scoreless in the first half. That combination supports both sides of the evaluation: Denver has late game resilience, yet it cannot assume another slow start is survivable.

San Francisco beat Arizona 36 to 30 in Week 3 for its third straight win. Purdy threw for 297 yards and four touchdowns, George Kittle scored twice in the fourth quarter, and the offensive line finished a third consecutive game without allowing a sack. Arizona ran 81 offensive plays and made the 49ers defend deep into the fourth quarter, a workload that matters now that the defensive injury list is longer.

The most recent regular season meeting was Denver's 11 to 10 home win on September 25, 2022. That result is useful only as broad series context because the quarterbacks, supporting casts and current injury conditions are different. Travel is manageable but not neutral: Denver moves from altitude to the West Coast after a Sunday night game, while San Francisco stays home for a third consecutive week.

Weather: heat is a real game management variable

The National Weather Service forecast for Santa Clara called for partly sunny conditions and a high near 96 degrees, with a heat advisory in effect. Wind was expected to be light. That does not create a guaranteed scoring angle, but it raises the value of defensive line rotation, hydration and possession management. A long San Francisco rushing drive can tax Denver's front, while Denver can answer by using tempo selectively rather than forcing its defense back onto the field after short possessions.

TeamRankings' first three game sample points to the core matchup. San Francisco has created explosive efficiency and stayed on the field, while Denver has struggled to run and has allowed 5.1 yards per opponent carry. The sample is small, so Football Nation is not treating the 49ers' 62.96 percent third down rate or 90 percent red zone touchdown rate as permanent. It is still meaningful that Denver must win earlier in the down sequence instead of asking its defense to survive repeated short yardage snaps.

Official Week 3 box scores add the player level context. Purdy completed 15 of 27 passes for 297 yards and four touchdowns against Arizona. Bo Nix completed 17 of 34 passes for 186 yards, two touchdowns and one interception against the Rams, then scored the winning touchdown on a one yard run. ESPN team pages and TeamRankings pages were included in the final source check. TeamRankings and the official club game pages control the numerical comparisons here because the direct ESPN tables were not reliably accessible in the final review.

Final injury report and replacements

Denver ruled out outside linebacker Dondrea Tillman with a hamstring injury. He was the only Bronco assigned a game status. Zach Allen, J.K. Dobbins, D.J. Jones, Marvin Mims Jr. and Jaylen Waddle practiced fully Friday and carried no designation. That gives Denver its main offensive skill options at the report checkpoint, although the inactive list remains controlling.

San Francisco ruled out Nick Bosa with knee and calf injuries, James Thompson Jr. with an ankle injury and Mykel Williams with a knee injury. Mike Evans is questionable with a rib injury and was described as a game time decision. Dre Greenlaw, Keion White and Jaden Dugger are also questionable. Trent Williams and Romello Height carry no game designation. Brandin Cooks was promoted to the active roster, giving the 49ers another receiving option if Evans cannot play.

The football consequence is clear. Denver should test the replacement edge rotation with its run game, screens and quick throws before asking Nix to hold the ball. San Francisco should avoid turning its defensive absences into a pass only game by building an early lead and making Denver chase. Evans' status affects the receiving rotation, but it does not automatically transfer a specific target total to Cooks, Deebo Samuel Sr. or Kittle.

Scheme and personnel keys

San Francisco's best path starts with McCaffrey from formations that preserve both a rushing option and a quick passing answer. Denver has allowed 143.7 rushing yards per game. If the Broncos keep light boxes, the 49ers can accept efficient carries. If Denver adds a defender near the line, Purdy can attack the space created behind that choice. Trent Williams' availability strengthens the protection plan, but Denver still needs to force one negative play before third down rather than waiting for a red zone stop.

Denver's upset path begins with patience. Dobbins handled 17 carries in Week 3, while RJ Harvey contributed more as a receiver than a runner. The Broncos do not need to match San Francisco's rushing average; they need enough efficiency to keep play action and quick game available. Sutton, Waddle and Pat Bryant give Nix different receiving profiles, but the passing game cannot live on low percentage third downs against a defense that can still disguise coverage behind its injured front.

Turnovers are the swing variable. Denver's defense produced two Matthew Stafford interceptions in Week 3, including Hufanga's touchdown, while its offense also gave the Rams a short field. San Francisco's offense has been efficient enough that Denver may need one extra possession. The strongest counterargument to the 49ers pick is that a depleted defense gives up sustained drives while Denver's secondary steals a possession from Purdy.

Current market, movement and implied score

BetMGM's event page checked October 4, 2026 at 5:03 AM CDT listed San Francisco minus 2.5 at 1.85 decimal, Denver plus 2.5 at 1.98, a total of 48 with the over at 1.93 and under at 1.90, and moneyline prices of 1.68 for San Francisco and 2.25 for Denver. Decimal prices are shown exactly as observed; approximate American equivalents are not needed to evaluate the quoted payout.

A reported FanDuel opening line was San Francisco minus 2.5 with a total of 46.5 and moneylines of Denver plus 124 and San Francisco minus 144. The spread has held at 2.5 in the checked comparison, while the total is now 48. At a 48 total and a San Francisco 2.5 point spread, the simple implied score is approximately 49ers 25.25, Broncos 22.75. Football Nation's call changes if the 49ers move through minus 3.5 or if late defensive absences materially weaken either side. No guaranteed edge is claimed.

Five anytime touchdown evaluations

Christian McCaffrey at 1.60 decimal: The matchup is the strongest case for the favorite. Denver's run defense and San Francisco's red zone performance create real scoring paths. The case against is price: a Purdy throw to another receiver, a field goal finish or a teammate's short touchdown can beat a good rushing thesis. Football Nation would require 1.75 or better and passes at 1.60.

J.K. Dobbins at 2.25: Dobbins is healthy enough to avoid a game designation and led Denver with 17 carries last week. San Francisco's missing defensive linemen improve the route. The counterargument is backfield competition from Harvey, a Nix keeper or a passing finish. Football Nation's minimum is 2.40 with a normal role, so 2.25 is a pass.

George Kittle at 2.50: Kittle scored twice in the fourth quarter against Arizona and remains a natural compact field target. Denver can answer with coverage attention, and touchdown results are volatile even when target quality is strong. Football Nation would want 2.75 or better. Kittle is a fantasy start, but the current touchdown price is not the same decision.

Mike Evans at 2.549: The role can support a scoring chance only if Evans is active and not limited by his rib injury. The strongest case against is simple: a game time decision should not be priced as though full participation is certain. Football Nation would require 3.00 or better after active status and a normal pregame role. Otherwise this market is a pass.

Jaylen Waddle at 2.88: Waddle practiced fully and can benefit if Denver protects Nix long enough to challenge San Francisco's coverage. Sutton, Bryant, the tight ends and the running game all compete for the same scoring possessions. Football Nation requires 3.10 or better and passes at 2.88. These are price disciplines, not calibrated touchdown probabilities.

Fantasy football guidance

Scoring format: full PPR with four points per passing touchdown. Start McCaffrey as an elite running back, Purdy as a solid quarterback start and Kittle as a top tight end. Samuel remains a starting receiver because his role can create yards in more than one way. Evans is a conditional start only after he is declared active; Cooks is a deep league replacement consideration rather than an automatic one for one substitution.

For Denver, Dobbins is a flex rather than a locked running back one because the offense has averaged 81 rushing yards and Harvey remains involved. Sutton and Waddle are flex starts with volume uncertainty. Nix is a two quarterback or superflex start and a riskier one quarterback streamer: his rushing ability and late game response matter, but the passing floor was modest in Week 3. Harvey remains a PPR bench stash whose receiving use can grow if Denver plays from behind.

Football Nation prediction

Prediction: 49ers 30, Broncos 24. San Francisco's early down efficiency and home field control outweigh the defensive absences, but Denver has enough available skill talent to keep the game competitive. The upset path is a Denver takeaway, a credible Dobbins rushing threat and Nix converting short fields before the heat and possession count wear down the Broncos defense. The fact that would change the call is a late loss of another key San Francisco offensive starter or a market move beyond 49ers minus 3.5.

Game day checklist

  • Confirm the final inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff, especially Mike Evans, Dre Greenlaw, Keion White and Jaden Dugger.

  • Recheck the Santa Clara heat advisory, field temperature and any wind change.

  • Recheck the spread, total, moneyline and each prop price. Do not reuse the earlier snapshot if the market changes.

  • Watch San Francisco's first two early down series for McCaffrey usage and Denver's box count.

  • Watch Denver's first third down against the replacement 49ers front for protection and route timing.
