Broncos Elevate Gavin Ortega vs. Chiefs: What Garett Bolles’ Status Means
The Denver Broncos elevated rookie offensive lineman Gavin Ortega from the practice squad for Sunday’s AFC West game against the Kansas City Chiefs. The move adds flexible interior depth while Denver waits on starting left tackle Garett Bolles, who is questionable with a hip injury.
Factual cutoff: Football Nation checked Denver’s official roster move, injury report and depth chart, Kansas City’s official preview and team statistics, and Weber State’s player record on November 1, 2026 at 4:17 AM Central. Fantasy recommendations use standard quarterback, flex and team defense scoring unless noted. Kansas City’s seven sacks are the official team total through six games.
The important distinction is that Ortega is not listed as Bolles’ direct backup. Denver’s published depth chart places veteran Matt Peart behind Bolles at left tackle, while Ortega spent the preseason listed at both guard spots. His elevation gives the Broncos another game day option, but it does not by itself confirm that Bolles will sit.
Why Denver elevated Gavin Ortega
Denver announced Saturday that Ortega and running back Cody Schrader were elevated from the practice squad. The Broncos also promoted safety Taylor Rapp to the 53 man roster and placed running back RJ Harvey on injured reserve. Ortega, a 6 foot 5, 300 pound undrafted rookie from Weber State, has not appeared in a regular season game.
Ortega played in all three of Denver’s preseason games and made the practice squad after final cuts. At Weber State, he played 41 career games, started throughout his final three seasons and earned All America and first team All Big Sky honors in 2025. The Wildcats allowed only 14 sacks during his senior season, the third fewest total in the Big Sky.
Garett Bolles remains the key decision
Bolles was limited throughout the week by a hip injury and received a questionable designation Friday. He is one of Denver’s most stable offensive players: the 10th year tackle started all 133 regular season games he played for the Broncos from 2017 through 2025 and earned first team All Pro and Pro Bowl honors last season.
If Bolles is active, Denver can keep its normal five man line intact and use Ortega only as emergency interior depth. If Bolles is inactive, Peart is the listed No. 2 left tackle. Alex Palczewski, who has appeared in 31 regular season games with 13 starts, supplies additional tackle experience. Ortega’s preseason depth chart placements at left and right guard make him a better fit as the reserve who protects Denver against a second injury or lets the coaching staff reshuffle multiple positions.
What the matchup says about the risk
Kansas City has recorded seven team sacks through six games, so this has not been an overwhelming sack production matchup. That matters: Bolles’ status should influence projections, but it is not enough on its own to make Chiefs D/ST an automatic ceiling play.
The larger concern is Denver’s limited margin for error. The Chiefs’ official preview notes that the Broncos rank 30th in total offense at 270.0 yards per game, have generated the league’s fewest plays of at least 10 yards and convert only 31 percent of their third downs. Denver has leaned heavily on short throws and yards after the catch; 64 percent of Bo Nix’s passing yards have come after the catch.
That style can help protect a replacement tackle because the ball comes out quickly. It can also become predictable if Kansas City wins first down and forces Nix into longer dropbacks. Denver managed only 176 total yards and went 2 for 12 on third down in the teams’ Week 1 meeting.
Fantasy football impact
Bo Nix
Nix remains a matchup dependent fantasy quarterback rather than a player to bench solely because Bolles is questionable. If Bolles is inactive, the downgrade is greatest for longer developing throws and scramble efficiency. Managers in one quarterback leagues should prefer a comparable healthy option with a cleaner protection outlook; superflex managers can still start Nix but should lower the ceiling expectation.
Jaylen Waddle and Courtland Sutton
Waddle is also questionable with a chest injury, creating a separate late window decision. Bolles’ availability matters more for downfield routes than for Denver’s quick game targets. Waddle and Sutton can still win on slants, crossers and catch and run opportunities, but an altered line would increase the chance that Denver leans on shorter throws and tighter formations.
J.K. Dobbins, Jonah Coleman and Denver’s tight ends
A healthy offensive line would help Denver stay balanced after Harvey moved to injured reserve. If Bolles sits, the Broncos may use more running back and tight end help in protection. That can preserve Nix but reduce route volume for a chip blocker. Dobbins remains the established backfield option, while Coleman’s opportunity rises because Harvey is unavailable.
Chiefs D/ST
Kansas City’s defense gets a modest upgrade if Bolles is inactive, especially in leagues that reward sacks heavily. The counterargument is the Chiefs’ seven sack season total and Denver’s quick passing profile. Chiefs D/ST is playable, but the final Bolles decision should move it only within the same streaming tier rather than transform it into a must start unit.
Sunday checkpoint
Chiefs Broncos kicks off at 3:25 p.m. CT. Final inactive lists should arrive around 1:55 p.m. CT. The first question is Bolles’ availability; the second is whether Denver dresses Ortega as its extra interior reserve or uses a different line configuration. Fantasy managers should also check Waddle’s status at the same time.
Bottom line
Ortega’s elevation is a legitimate depth move, not proof of a left tackle change. Peart remains the listed backup to Bolles, and Ortega’s clearest role is guard depth with emergency flexibility. If Bolles plays, Denver’s fantasy outlook is largely unchanged. If he sits, lower the Broncos’ passing game ceiling slightly and give Chiefs D/ST a small, not dramatic, boost.
Football consequence: If Garett Bolles is inactive, Denver can protect the left edge with Matt Peart, Alex Palczewski or help from a tight end and running back, but any extra protection reduces the number of eligible receivers in the route.
Fantasy consequence: In standard scoring, the injury raises the volatility of Bo Nix and the Denver passing game more than it changes the weekly projection for any one skill player. Kansas City’s team defense remains a matchup play, not an automatic start.
Strongest counterargument: Denver’s quick passing plan can limit sack chances even if Bolles is inactive, and Kansas City has recorded only seven sacks through six games.
Football Nation opinion: Ortega’s elevation is a useful contingency move, but it is not proof that Bolles will sit or that Kansas City’s defense belongs in a new fantasy tier.
Next checkpoint: Denver’s inactive list is due about 1:55 PM Central, ninety minutes before the 3:25 PM Central kickoff. Confirm Bolles’ status and the starting left tackle before setting late window fantasy lineups.
