Browns 27, Titans 24: Szmyt's Walk Off Field Goal Caps Cleveland Rally
Andre Szmyt ended a wild afternoon in Nashville with a 32 yard field goal on the final snap, giving Cleveland a 27 to 24 victory over Tennessee. The kick supplied the finish, but the larger answer was Cleveland's offensive recovery. The Browns fell behind 14 to 0, then produced 491 yards, averaged 7.4 yards per play and scored on both of their final two possessions.
The practical consequence is clear. Cleveland moved to 5 and 2 and remained in first place in the AFC North, while Tennessee fell to 1 and 6. The Browns again proved they can win a one possession game late. The Titans showed enough from Tony Pollard and their opening script to threaten Cleveland, yet their inability to finish a goal to go series and protect the final 58 seconds erased that work.
The final minute decided the score
Tennessee appeared to have forced overtime when Pollard finished an 11 play, 63 yard drive with a one yard touchdown run. That score tied the game at 24 with 58 seconds left. Cleveland did not need a timeout filled march. Deshaun Watson found Denzel Boston for six yards, Dylan Sampson for eight and Harold Fannin Jr. for 36. A defensive penalty then moved the ball to the Tennessee 14, where Szmyt converted from 32 yards as time expired.
That sequence captured the difference between the teams. Tennessee needed 11 plays and a fourth down conversion to tie the game. Cleveland needed four plays to answer. Fannin's 36 yard catch was the decisive explosive play, and Szmyt delivered his second walk off winner in as many weeks after also beating Baltimore at the horn.
Cleveland recovered from a two touchdown hole
The Titans opened with Pollard touchdown runs of 36 and 10 yards. Cor'Dale Flott's interception of Watson gave Tennessee the short field for the second score, and the Browns looked in danger of losing control before the first quarter was halfway complete.
Cleveland answered by leaning on Quinshon Judkins and the spacing created by rookie receiver KC Concepcion Jr. Judkins scored from five yards in the first quarter and from six yards in the second. Szmyt's 28 yard field goal on the final play of the first half completed a 17 point response and sent Cleveland to the locker room ahead 17 to 14.
The third quarter went scoreless, but Cleveland's offense kept building advantages. Watson finished 25 of 36 for 308 yards with one interception. It was his first 300 yard passing game with the Browns. He added 19 rushing yards and scored on a nine yard run with 4:34 remaining. The passing line did not include a touchdown, but Watson distributed the ball efficiently enough to create 15 passing first downs and two late scoring drives.
Tennessee's missed opportunities
The Titans had the game state they wanted early and still let it slip. Their most damaging possession began at their own 44 and reached first and goal at the Cleveland four. Three consecutive plays from the one failed, including a fourth down stop. Instead of extending the lead to 21 to 7, Tennessee gave Cleveland a chance to reset.
The teams finished even in turnover margin. Watson threw one interception and Fannin lost a fumble. Cam Ward threw one interception to Denzel Ward, and Carnell Tate lost a fumble forced by Tyson Campbell. The separating issue was what each offense did between those mistakes. Cleveland generated 26 first downs to Tennessee's 18 and outgained the Titans 491 to 322.
Tennessee also could not turn its pass rush into a disruptive advantage. Each quarterback was sacked once. Watson averaged 8.3 net yards per pass play while Ward averaged 5.7. Ward completed 20 of 31 for 181 yards with no passing touchdowns and one interception. The rookie did make the late fourth down completion to Elic Ayomanor that extended the tying drive, but the Titans produced only 181 net passing yards.
The run game and receiving leaders
Both teams scored all three of their touchdowns on the ground. Judkins carried 17 times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. Sampson added 45 yards on six attempts, Concepcion contributed 23 on three carries and Watson supplied the fourth quarter quarterback run. Cleveland finished with 183 rushing yards at 6.3 per attempt.
Pollard was Tennessee's best player. He rushed 25 times for 129 yards and all three Titans touchdowns, then caught three passes for 26 yards. His 155 yards from scrimmage kept Tennessee alive even when the passing game stalled. The counterpoint is that the Titans had little complementary rushing production: the rest of the team combined for 12 yards on five carries.
Concepcion led Cleveland with eight receptions for 129 yards on 10 targets and added 23 rushing yards. His 152 yards from scrimmage established him as the offense's most dangerous space player. Fannin caught six of nine targets for 91 yards, including the final drive's 36 yard gain. Jerry Jeudy caught all four of his targets but finished with only 21 yards.
Third down, red zone and possession
Cleveland held the ball for 31 minutes and 14 seconds, converted 5 of 11 third downs and scored touchdowns on 3 of 5 red zone trips. Tennessee possessed the ball for 28 minutes and 46 seconds, went 5 of 13 on third down and scored touchdowns on 2 of 4 red zone possessions. The Titans' failed goal to go series was the single most expensive efficiency result.
The Browns also overcame eight penalties for 48 yards and a missed 43 yard field goal that struck the right upright early in the fourth quarter. Tennessee tied the game after that miss, but Cleveland's offense answered twice in the final nine minutes. The resilience was real, even if the margin remained thin.
Fantasy football consequences
In half point PPR formats, Pollard, Judkins and Concepcion delivered clear difference making weeks. Pollard's three scores made him the game's top fantasy performer. Judkins converted goal line work twice and remained Cleveland's lead runner. Concepcion's 10 targets, three carries and 152 total yards confirm a role that should be treated as more than a one game spike.
Fannin also remains a weekly starting option because nine targets and 91 yards at tight end are bankable volume. The lost fumble matters, but the final drive showed that Cleveland still trusted him in the highest leverage moment. Watson is a viable superflex starter when Cleveland protects him this well, though his lack of a passing touchdown and one interception limit the ceiling in standard one quarterback formats.
Ward's fantasy line was disappointing despite the late comeback. Pollard absorbed the touchdowns, and Ward's 181 passing yards with an interception left little production to offset the mistake. Tate's five catches for 69 yards led the Tennessee receivers, but the lost fumble and Ridley's inactive status kept the receiving rotation volatile.
Football Nation conclusion
Cleveland deserved the result because it created far more offense after the first quarter and was the more explosive team in the closing moments. The strongest counterargument is that Tennessee left seven points at the goal line and still tied the game with 58 seconds remaining. A single coverage stop or a longer final tackle could have changed the winner.
The Browns should celebrate the finish without ignoring the warning. Their defense allowed Pollard to score three times and failed to protect a seven point lead in the final four minutes. Tennessee's lesson is harsher: a 14 point start, 129 rushing yards from Pollard and a late tying drive were not enough because the offense wasted the goal line chance and the defense allowed 491 yards.
The next checkpoints are Tytus Howard's concussion evaluation and Myles Harden's hamstring status. Cleveland listed Howard for evaluation after he left in the third quarter. Harden was called questionable during the game and later returned, according to the official gamebook. Any postgame medical update should supersede the in game designation.
