Browns Offensive Line Battle: Injuries Keep Cleveland’s Starting Five Unsettled

The Cleveland Browns may have more uncertainty on the offensive line than at any other non quarterback position. Todd Monken is still evaluating the best five, and injuries have complicated the picture at center while competition remains open at tackle and on the right side.

Zion Johnson appears to be one of the firmer pieces at left guard, but the rest of the configuration is still moving. Rookie Spencer Fano is competing with Dawand Jones at left tackle, while veteran Tytus Howard has the versatility to play guard or tackle depending on what the staff decides gives Cleveland its strongest combination.

Center is the biggest immediate concern

The center competition has been clouded by injuries to Elgton Jenkins and Parker Brailsford. That matters because center is not simply another blocking position. The player in the middle is involved in protection communication, identifying fronts and keeping the quarterback and guards on the same page before the snap.

Monken has emphasized both talent and fit when discussing the line. That is the right framing. The five best individual linemen do not automatically create the best unit if players are forced into roles that weaken communication or protection. Cleveland has enough moving pieces that preseason games may become the deciding evidence rather than camp reputation.
