Can the Kicking Team Advance Its Own Punt in the NFL?

The kicking team can recover and advance its own punt behind the line of scrimmage. If it catches or recovers the kick beyond the line, the ball is dead immediately.

That location rule answers whether a player can run. A separate question, who first touched the punt, determines who is entitled to possession.
A blocked punt behind the line
On fourth and 12, a punt is blocked into the backfield. The punter picks it up behind the original line and runs. The advance is legal, but he still needs the original first down distance. Recovering the kick does not automatically create a new series.
The same recovery rule can apply if the kick crossed the line and came back behind it. However, crossing the line matters for any attempt to throw a forward pass afterward: a forward pass is illegal once the ball has been beyond the line. Do not assume every blocked punt allows every rescue option.
A muff beyond the line
A returner touches a punt beyond the line without possessing it. A coverage player then recovers there. The recovery is legal, and the kicking team receives a new series, but the player cannot advance the recovered kick.
That differs from a fumble after a completed returner catch. Once a returner has possessed the ball and later fumbles, the loose ball is no longer the original kick. Normal fumble rules govern its recovery and advance.
Recovery in the end zone
A legal kicking team recovery in the receiving end zone after receiving team touching can score a touchdown. Without that qualifying touch, simply falling on the punt there does not produce a touchdown.
Follow three landmarks on replay: the original line, any receiving team touch beyond it and the recovery spot. The block or muff starts the drama; those details determine the ruling.
