Carson Beck’s Back Injury Persists Into Week 7: Cardinals QB Depth and Fantasy Impact
Arizona Cardinals rookie quarterback Carson Beck was limited by a back injury Wednesday and was not throwing during the open portion of practice. The designation extends a back issue that first appeared late in Week 6, when Beck was limited Friday but received no game status.
For Week 7, this is a depth-chart and development story—not a signal that Arizona is changing starters. Jacoby Brissett remains the offense’s established QB1, Gardner Minshew II has been the backup, and Beck most recently dressed as the emergency third quarterback. Still, Beck’s practice progression matters because Denver brings one of the week’s hottest pressure units to State Farm Stadium on Sunday.
What the Wednesday injury report tells us
Arizona’s official injury report listed Beck as limited with the back problem. The team’s practice report also noted that he did not throw while reporters were allowed to observe. That combination confirms the issue affected his Wednesday workload, but it does not establish a setback, a timetable or a Week 7 game designation.
The useful next data point is participation. A move to full on Thursday or Friday would suggest the Cardinals are comfortable with his progress. Another limited session—or a downgrade to did not participate—would make the final injury designation and Arizona’s inactive list more significant.
The context matters because this did not begin Wednesday. Beck was limited with the same back listing during the previous Friday practice before the Rams game and still avoided a game designation. He subsequently remained the emergency third quarterback for Arizona’s 18-16 win.
Carson Beck’s current place on the Cardinals depth chart
Beck’s injury does not create a starter decision. Arizona used him as the emergency third quarterback in Week 6, meaning he could enter only if both Brissett and Minshew became unavailable because of injury or ejection. Coach Mike LaFleur had also said before that game that an imminent move into the starting lineup did not appear to be coming.
The rookie’s only NFL game statistics came in the preseason opener, when he completed 15 of 19 passes for 188 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions—a 125.4 passer rating. Those numbers showed the upside that made him a third-round pick, but they are not evidence that he is about to displace Brissett during the regular season.
Brissett has completed 156 of 234 passes for 1,328 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions through six games. Beck has no regular-season attempts. Unless Arizona changes Beck’s game-day designation, his Week 7 role remains developmental insurance rather than part of the offensive plan.
Why the back issue matters against Denver
Denver enters the matchup 4-2 after recording five sacks and three takeaways in its Week 6 win over Seattle. The Broncos also hit Sam Darnold 17 times and generated pressure on more than 20 snaps, according to the team’s official recap.
That pressure profile makes healthy quarterback depth more important than usual. If Beck cannot handle a normal workload, Arizona’s practical game-day safety net behind Brissett and Minshew becomes thinner. It does not alter the starting plan, but it reduces flexibility if the Cardinals encounter an in-game quarterback emergency.
The game is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 25, at State Farm Stadium. Denver is 4-2, Arizona is 2-4, and the Cardinals’ protection plan will matter more to the offense’s ceiling than Beck’s Wednesday designation by itself.
Fantasy football impact
Jacoby Brissett: No ranking change is warranted from Beck’s status alone. Brissett remains the starter and has averaged 221.3 passing yards per game with a 9-to-6 touchdown-to-interception ratio.
Trey McBride: The tight end remains Arizona’s most bankable target with 49 catches, 361 yards and three touchdowns. Beck’s limited practice does not change McBride’s volume projection.
Michael Wilson: Wilson has 33 receptions for 320 yards and one score. His Week 7 value still depends on Brissett’s matchup and Denver’s pass defense, not the QB3 injury listing.
Carson Beck: He is not a redraft waiver add or a Week 7 start. Dynasty managers can continue to view him as a developmental stash, but there is no current path to usable fantasy volume.
Cardinals offense: Downgrade only if Brissett or Minshew develops a separate issue. Beck’s status by itself does not reduce the projections of Arizona’s skill players.
Three checkpoints before Broncos at Cardinals
Thursday participation: a full practice would ease concern; another limited session would keep the issue active.
Friday game status: questionable, doubtful or out would clarify whether Arizona must adjust its emergency-quarterback plan.
Sunday inactive list: confirm whether Beck is active, inactive or again designated as the emergency third quarterback.
