Cashius Howell Wrist Surgery Shifts Bengals Edge Rotation Before Week 9
The Cincinnati Bengals will carry a thinner edge rotation to Madrid after rookie Cashius Howell underwent wrist surgery Sunday night. Head coach Zac Taylor said Howell will be out for weeks, while the club was still determining whether to place him on injured reserve. That distinction matters for the roster transaction, but not for Week 9 planning: Cincinnati has to redistribute Howell's passing down work now.
Howell had earned that work. The second round rookie played 27 defensive snaps in Cincinnati's 43 to 36 overtime win over Tennessee, recording a quarterback hit and a tackle for loss. Through seven games he has one sack, five quarterback hits and nine pressures, the fourth most pressures on the team according to the Bengals' official update.

What the Bengals actually confirmed
The confirmed portion is narrow and important. Howell had surgery, he will miss multiple weeks, and Taylor did not announce a firm return date. A public report from Bengals beat writer Paul Dehner Jr. said the move was trending toward injured reserve, but no corresponding transaction had been posted at the time of this check. Football Nation is therefore treating injured reserve as likely, not final.
That uncertainty should prevent an exaggerated timeline. If Cincinnati places Howell on injured reserve, league rules would require him to miss at least four games. If the team keeps him on the active roster, it would signal a belief that his return could come sooner. The next transaction is more informative than any guess about a wrist recovery.
Shemar Stewart gets the first opportunity
The immediate replacement is Shemar Stewart. Cincinnati's 2025 first round pick played only six snaps against Tennessee and has logged 23 snaps across four games this season. The Bengals' official account credited him with three pass rushes and one pressure in Week 8. That is a very small sample, but it is also why his Week 9 workload is a real depth chart checkpoint.
Stewart does not have to replace Howell alone. Myles Murphy and Boye Mafe remain the primary edge players, and the interior combination of Dexter Lawrence II and Jonathan Allen can create favorable one on one situations outside. Cincinnati has 23 team sacks through eight weeks. Mafe leads the club with 5.5, Lawrence has five, Allen has three, and Murphy has 1.5.
Cedric Johnson is the swing piece. He has two sacks this season, but Taylor called him day to day with an ankle injury. Johnson was expected to travel to Spain with a chance to play. If he is active, Stewart can stay in a narrower development package. If Johnson is limited or inactive, Stewart may have to handle both early down and passing down snaps.
Why the rotation matters against Atlanta
Cincinnati's offense can erase mistakes, as Joe Burrow's six total touchdowns against Tennessee demonstrated. The defense still allowed 36 points, 304 passing yards to Cam Ward and 117 rushing yards to Tony Pollard. The pass rush produced the decisive moments, including Mafe's strip sack and Lawrence's late fourth quarter sack, but the unit needed a long rotation to keep those rushers fresh through overtime.
Howell's absence removes one of the young rushers who could win quickly without forcing Mafe or Murphy to play every high leverage snap. Madrid also adds unusual travel and recovery demands. The Bengals depart Tuesday night, arrive Wednesday morning and begin their on site work Thursday. That makes the rotation plan, not merely the starting lineup, the useful information to watch.
The strongest counterargument is that Cincinnati's front is deep enough to absorb a 27 snap role. The team has three players with at least three sacks and can manufacture pressure with interior games. That is fair. The concern is not that the pass rush suddenly disappears. It is that fewer trusted edge snaps can make the group less efficient late in drives, especially if Johnson is not fully available.
Fantasy football and IDP impact
In standard team defense scoring, Bengals D/ST remains a volatile streaming option rather than an automatic start. Twenty three sacks create a useful ceiling, but the 36 points allowed to Tennessee show the floor. Howell's injury lowers the margin for error without destroying the matchup. Managers should check Johnson's practice participation and Cincinnati's final inactive list before locking in the unit.
For tackle heavy IDP leagues, Howell can move to an injured reserve slot if the platform allows it, but he is not a must hold in shallow redraft formats because his role was pressure driven rather than tackle heavy. Stewart belongs on watch lists in dynasty and deep sack premium leagues. He should not be started merely because the depth chart opened. The actionable threshold is a clear jump from six snaps toward a rotational workload of 20 or more.
Mafe and Lawrence remain the most trustworthy Cincinnati pass rush options. Mafe's 5.5 sacks and Lawrence's five sacks are supported by established snap volume and finishing roles. Murphy could gain a few additional rushes, but Howell's absence alone does not guarantee a major IDP scoring increase for any one player.
The next checkpoint
The next checkpoint is Cincinnati's transaction wire and first Madrid practice report. Watch for an injured reserve move involving Howell, Johnson's ankle participation, and any practice squad promotion or signing. On game day, Stewart's snap share is the cleanest signal. A workload near or above 20 snaps would confirm a real rotation change. Another single digit game would show the Bengals leaned on their veteran front instead.
