Cesar Ruiz Knee Injury: Saints’ Week 7 Line Outlook for Paris

3 min read

New Orleans Saints starting right guard Cesar Ruiz left Sunday’s 34-27 win over the New York Giants late in the first half with a knee injury and was ruled out. New Orleans has not announced a diagnosis, recovery timetable or Week 7 game designation, so his availability for the Saints’ trip to Paris remains unresolved.

That uncertainty matters well beyond one starting spot. Ruiz is one of the most experienced players on a rebuilt offensive line, and the Saints now have a short week of preparation before facing the Pittsburgh Steelers in the NFL’s first regular-season game in Paris.

What happened to Cesar Ruiz?

Ruiz exited late in the first half against the Giants. The Saints subsequently ruled him out with a knee injury, while Jeremiah Wright continued to take snaps at right guard. No reporting available as of Monday afternoon has established the exact nature or severity of the injury.

That distinction is important: “ruled out” described Ruiz’s status for the remainder of Sunday’s game, not his status for Week 7. Fantasy managers and Saints fans should wait for New Orleans’ first practice report and any update from head coach Kellen Moore before treating Ruiz as either available or unavailable in Paris.

Saints offensive line depth behind Ruiz

New Orleans’ current depth chart lists Ruiz as the starting right guard and Wright as his backup. David Edwards starts at left guard, Erik McCoy starts at center, and William Sherman is listed as a reserve option at both left guard and center.

Wright is therefore the cleanest next-man-up projection if Ruiz cannot play. That does not guarantee New Orleans would use the same five-man combination for every snap; game-planning, practice performance and additional injury information can still change the lineup. It does, however, make Wright the name to track when the Saints return to practice.

The encouraging part: New Orleans still ran the ball

The Saints finished Sunday with a season-high 175 rushing yards and held on for a 34-27 win. Quarterback Tyler Shough threw three touchdown passes and added a rushing score as New Orleans improved to 2-4.

That production is encouraging because the offense did not collapse after Ruiz left. It should not be read as proof that his absence would be insignificant against Pittsburgh. The Steelers present a different front, and losing continuity at guard can affect interior protection, short-yardage execution and the timing of inside-zone runs.

Week 7 in Paris: matchup and schedule

The Saints host the Steelers at Stade de France on Sunday, October 25, with kickoff scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Central. It will be the NFL’s first regular-season game in Paris. New Orleans then has its Week 8 bye, which could influence how the club handles a player who is close but not fully ready.

The travel component adds another layer. Teams must balance practice work, recovery, medical treatment and an international itinerary. The most meaningful checkpoints will be Ruiz’s practice participation, his official game designation and whether Wright receives first-team work at right guard.

Fantasy football impact

Ruiz is not a traditional fantasy scorer, but his status affects several playable Saints. Alvin Kamara and Travis Etienne Jr. managers should monitor whether New Orleans can preserve its interior rushing efficiency. Tyler Shough’s protection is also relevant in superflex and two-quarterback formats, particularly against a Pittsburgh defense capable of creating pressure without heavy blitz volume.

For now, there is no reason to make a lineup move based only on Ruiz leaving Week 6. The practical fantasy response is to keep Saints skill players in their normal range, downgrade only if the injury report shows multiple offensive-line concerns, and avoid assuming Wright would be a major liability before seeing the full starting combination.

What to watch next

1. The first Saints injury report: Did Ruiz practice fully, on a limited basis or not at all?

2. Any medical or timetable update from Kellen Moore: A confirmed diagnosis would materially change the Week 7 outlook.

3. First-team guard reps: Wright is the listed backup, but practice usage will provide the clearest lineup clue.

4. Additional line injuries: One replacement is manageable; multiple changes would create a larger fantasy and matchup concern.

Bottom line

Ruiz’s knee injury is a legitimate Week 7 concern, but the Saints have not yet provided enough information to declare him out or assign a recovery window. Wright is the current depth-chart replacement, and New Orleans’ strong rushing finish against New York gives the offense some evidence it can function if a change is required. The Paris practice reports—not speculation—should drive the final fantasy and matchup adjustment.
