Chargers Activate KeAndre Lambert-Smith: Week 6 Fantasy Impact

4 min read

The Los Angeles Chargers activated wide receiver and return specialist KeAndre Lambert-Smith from injured reserve Saturday, adding speed and special teams experience before Sunday’s AFC West game at Kansas City.

The transaction does not guarantee that Lambert-Smith will play. The NFL’s final Week 6 injury report lists him as questionable with a hamstring injury, while Chargers receiver Tre Harris is out. That makes Sunday’s inactive list—and not Saturday’s roster move—the final availability checkpoint.

Los Angeles also released veteran receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling, signed outside linebacker Caleb Murphy to the active roster and elevated offensive lineman Daniel Brunskill and cornerback Isas Waxter from the practice squad. The moves give the Chargers more options for a difficult road assignment without promising immediate fantasy volume.

What the Chargers changed

Lambert-Smith returned from Reserve/Injured; Designated for Return. The Chargers selected him in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft with the 158th overall pick. As a rookie, he appeared in 11 games with two starts, catching five passes for 51 yards and one touchdown.

His clearer early career contribution came on kickoffs: 18 returns for 418 yards, a 23.2-yard average. He also led the Chargers during the 2026 preseason with seven receptions for 93 yards, adding a 28-yard kickoff return and two punt returns for 15 yards.

Those numbers point to the most realistic Sunday role. If active, Lambert-Smith can provide receiver depth and help in the return game. They do not establish him as a high volume target. Los Angeles would have to activate him on game day, then decide how much work his hamstring and recent layoff can handle.

Why the move matters against Kansas City

The timing matters because the Chargers enter the matchup short on personnel. Harris is out with a hamstring injury, and Lambert-Smith is one of two Los Angeles receivers listed as questionable; Brenen Thompson is the other. Starting tackle Joe Alt, guard Kayode Awosika, cornerback Donte Jackson and safety Derwin James are also out.

Kansas City hosts Los Angeles at 4:25 p.m. ET Sunday. The Chiefs enter 4-0, while the Chargers are 0-5. For Los Angeles, the roster additions are about creating enough functional depth to compete—not about one player transforming the offense.

Valdes-Scantling’s release creates a cleaner path for Lambert-Smith to dress if the medical staff clears him. Still, the Chargers could prioritize his return ability and use a limited receiver package. That would help field position without producing the route volume fantasy managers need.

Caleb Murphy adds edge and special teams depth

Murphy’s promotion fills the active roster spot created when fullback Alec Ingold went on injured reserve. He has played 21 NFL games for Tennessee, Los Angeles and New England, totaling nine tackles, 0.5 sacks and one quarterback hit. His 10 career special teams tackles help explain the decision.

Murphy was elevated for last week’s game at Buffalo and made his 2026 Chargers debut. Signing him to the 53-man roster keeps a known special teams contributor available while Los Angeles manages a questionable designation for outside linebacker Bud Dupree.

For fantasy purposes, Murphy’s move does not materially change the Chargers D/ST projection by itself. It is a depth and game day roster decision, not evidence of a major pass rush upgrade.

Fantasy football impact

KeAndre Lambert-Smith: Do not start him in standard redraft leagues. Even if active, he has not shown a bankable target floor and may be eased back. He belongs on watchlists in deep leagues and becomes more interesting where kickoff return yards score points.

Chargers wide receivers: Harris being out creates an opening, but managers should not automatically transfer his opportunity to Lambert-Smith. Ladd McConkey and Quentin Johnston remain the established fantasy names. Sunday’s inactive list and opening personnel packages will reveal whether Lambert-Smith is primarily a returner, a rotational receiver or both.

Marquez Valdes-Scantling: The release removes him from Chargers fantasy consideration. He can sign elsewhere, but fantasy managers do not need to hold him in ordinary redraft formats while waiting for a new role.

Chargers D/ST: Murphy’s addition is useful roster maintenance, but Los Angeles remains a risky start at Arrowhead. The Chargers are missing James and Jackson in the secondary, while several front seven contributors are questionable.

What to watch before kickoff

1. The inactive list: Lambert-Smith must be active before any role projection matters. Inactives are due 90 minutes before the 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff.

2. Return assignments: Kickoff and punt duties could give Lambert-Smith an immediate path onto the field even if his offensive package is limited.

3. Receiver rotation: His first quarter snap share and route participation will be more useful than the depth chart label. A handful of clear out routes would not create fantasy value; sustained two receiver or three receiver work would.

4. Hamstring management: A questionable player returning from injured reserve may be active but restricted. Any report of a pitch count should keep him out of standard fantasy lineups.

Football Nation takeaway

The Chargers’ Saturday roster package improves depth before a difficult divisional game, but Lambert-Smith’s activation should be read as permission to play—not confirmation that he will play. His return background gives him the best immediate path to usefulness, while Harris’ absence creates a possible receiving opportunity that still must be earned.

Fantasy managers should treat Lambert-Smith as a deep league and return yard watchlist option. The actionable Sunday sequence is simple: check the inactive list, identify the returner, then watch the first two offensive series before assigning any lasting value.
