CJ Allen’s 45 Snap Debut Changes Indianapolis’ Linebacker Plan

CJ Allen’s first NFL start did more than give Indianapolis a useful rookie data point. It gave the Colts a credible plan if Akeem Davis-Gaither cannot carry his normal workload against Dallas on Sunday.
Davis-Gaither, the middle linebacker atop the Colts’ Week 9 depth chart and the team leader with 65 tackles, did not participate Wednesday or Thursday because of a knee issue. That does not guarantee he will miss the game. It does make Allen’s Jacksonville tape immediately relevant instead of merely developmental.
Forty five snaps were real work
Allen played 45 of the Colts’ 51 defensive snaps in his first career start at Jacksonville. That is an 88.2 percent share, not a specialty package. He led Indianapolis with 10 tackles, including seven tackles against the run and five run stops, and recorded his first NFL sack. The Colts also cited a team best 83.9 run defense grade from Pro Football Focus in their review of his performance.
The useful part is the combination. Tackle totals alone can be misleading in a 42 to 7 loss because a defense that stays on the field creates more opportunities. Allen’s snap volume, run production and sack show that the staff trusted him through multiple situations. The rookie did not have to leave the field every time the down or formation changed.
The communication job matters most
Indianapolis tested Allen with the defensive green dot during training camp. That detail matters now because replacing Davis-Gaither is not only about finding another tackler. The middle of the defense has to receive the call, set the front, communicate motion and keep the unit aligned before the snap.
Allen’s first start suggests that responsibility is no longer theoretical. Still, the Colts should not ask one rookie performance to settle the entire issue. If Davis-Gaither is active but limited, a managed rotation could preserve the veteran’s communication value while keeping Allen’s downhill speed on the field. If Davis-Gaither cannot play, the opening series will show whether Allen receives the communication helmet or whether Indianapolis protects him by giving that job to another defender.

Dallas creates a layered test
Dallas running back Javonte Williams has 134 carries for 528 yards and eight touchdowns through the current comparison period. His 3.9 yards per carry do not make the matchup simple. The workload and touchdown production say the Colts must fit the run repeatedly and survive short yardage without creating easy cutback lanes.
The harder assignment comes after the first step. A linebacker who attacks downhill too aggressively can open space behind him for play action and crossing routes. Allen’s job is not just to meet Williams in the hole. It is to diagnose run or pass quickly enough that Dak Prescott cannot manipulate the second level.

What Indianapolis should preserve
Even if Davis-Gaither returns to a full role, Allen’s 45 snap debut should change the plan. The Colts now have evidence that the rookie can handle meaningful early down work. A small weekly package would let Indianapolis develop his communication speed, reduce the physical burden on the veteran and create a clearer evaluation before future roster decisions.
The strongest counterargument is that one productive start came in a lopsided defeat. Ten tackles can reflect exposure as much as dominance, and rookie processing errors may not appear in a simple box score. That is why the next evaluation should focus on alignment, fit integrity and route recognition rather than another raw tackle target.
Fantasy consequence
For offensive fantasy formats, this is indirect matchup context rather than a reason to change a Colts skill player ranking. In IDP leagues, Allen is a watchlist option whose value depends on confirmed snap volume. If Davis-Gaither is ruled out and Allen keeps an every down role, the tackle opportunity makes him a conditional start in deeper formats. If Davis-Gaither is active without a limitation, Allen should remain on benches until the rotation becomes clear.
Next checkpoint
The Friday game status is the first checkpoint. The second arrives on Indianapolis’ first two defensive series Sunday: who wears the green dot, whether Allen stays on the field in passing situations and how the Colts divide the middle linebacker work. Those answers will tell us whether Jacksonville was an emergency start or the beginning of a durable role.
