CJ Donaldson’s Thursday Downgrade Forces New Orleans to Build Two Backfield Plans

New Orleans did not receive one simple answer at running back Thursday. Alvin Kamara returned as a limited participant after sitting Wednesday for rest and a back issue. CJ Donaldson moved the other direction, from limited to no practice, while dealing with shoulder and concussion issues. That creates two plans for Sunday, not one projection.

The change matters because the Saints have already been rearranging this room. Their current depth chart lists Kamara first, Kendre Miller second, Donaldson third and Audric Estimé fourth. Estimé was awarded to New Orleans off waivers Tuesday, giving the offense a familiar contingency after he spent time with the Saints in 2025 and again during the 2026 preseason.

What Thursday actually changed

Kamara’s limited return is useful evidence because his job is broader than a rushing total. Through seven team games, he has 41 carries for 125 yards and two rushing touchdowns, plus 22 receptions for 133 yards and one receiving score. His 3.0 yards per carry show why New Orleans cannot simply call more of the same runs and expect the structure to fix itself. His receiving work, however, still gives Tyler Shough an outlet when pressure or coverage removes the first read.

Donaldson’s Thursday absence changes a different part of the menu. The rookie has 17 carries for 81 yards, a 4.8 average, and four catches for 10 yards. That is a small sample, not proof that he should lead the backfield. It does show that the Saints would lose a 230 pound changeup if he cannot clear the shoulder and concussion process.

A Thursday DNP does not mean Donaldson is out. Concussion progression is individualized, and the final report has not been issued. The correct editorial line is narrower: New Orleans must prepare for a backfield with Donaldson and one without him.

Plan A: keep Kamara and Miller in distinct jobs

If Kamara advances Friday, New Orleans can keep the pass game and space touches centered on him while Miller handles a larger portion of the conventional early down work. Miller leads the team with 57 carries and 159 rushing yards, although his 2.8 yard average also warns against treating volume as a solution by itself.

The useful division is functional. Kamara can motion, release and force a linebacker to declare. Miller can give the offense a downhill starting point. Either back can carry or catch, but the call should tell Shough where his immediate answer is. That clarity matters for an offense that has surrendered 15 sacks and converted 43 of 99 third downs.

Cleveland’s front can attack predictable personnel. If New Orleans shows one back only for passing concepts and another only for runs, the defense gains information before the snap. The Saints should vary formations while keeping protection responsibilities simple. The goal is not to disguise every play. It is to prevent the backfield substitution from announcing the play family.

Plan B: test the Estimé contingency before expanding it

If Donaldson is unavailable, Estimé becomes the most obvious physical contingency on the active depth chart. New Orleans’ official roster move says he produced 198 rushing yards and 103 receiving yards in seven games for the Saints in 2025. That history explains why the team brought him back, but it does not establish a Week 9 workload.

The first test is assignment trust. A newly returned back must handle the protection call, identify pressure and release at the right time. Short yardage is not only a collision. It is also formation recognition, ball security and the ability to stay on schedule when the defense crowds the line. New Orleans can use Estimé as part of the plan without pretending a waiver claim immediately solves a rushing offense averaging 3.5 yards per attempt.

That plan also protects the staff from overloading Kamara because he returned to limited work. A limited Thursday session is progress, not a green light for an unrestricted role. If the back issue remains on Friday’s report, the Saints need to preserve the receiving value that makes Kamara different instead of spending every available snap on low efficiency interior carries.

The Saints’ official X post provides the central piece of evidence: Kamara returned to practice Thursday and the linked injury report shows the full participation change. The exact public status was opened and checked Nov. 6, 2026 at 7:41 a.m. Central.

Fantasy consequence: preserve the uncertainty

Kamara remains the only Saints back with a demonstrated 2026 receiving role large enough to change PPR decisions. His 22 catches matter more than guessing whether he will reach a specific carry total. Miller is the direct contingency for conventional work, but a larger role would not automatically create efficiency. Estimé is a watch list player until Friday status and Sunday actives establish whether he has a game day role.

Donaldson should not be projected for touches while he is a DNP with a concussion designation. In standard formats, managers should treat this as a Friday checkpoint. In PPR formats, Kamara’s receiving usage provides the clearest floor if he is active, while the split behind him remains uncertain. Those are conditional conclusions, not lineup guarantees.

The strongest counterargument

Thursday can overstate change. Kamara’s Wednesday absence included a rest designation, and Donaldson’s DNP may be one step in a protocol that still ends with clearance. The Saints could issue a much cleaner Friday report. That is why the article builds two plans instead of declaring a new depth chart.

What to check next

Friday’s participation and game designations are decisive. Check whether Kamara advances to full, whether Donaldson practices and clears the required concussion steps, and whether Estimé receives an active role. After Sunday, compare early down efficiency, third down distance and pass protection assignments rather than judging the plan only by raw carries.

Material facts were checked Nov. 6, 2026 from 7:36 to 7:44 a.m. Central. Practice movement compares Wednesday with Thursday. Player production uses the Saints’ full 2026 team sample through seven games. Estimé’s prior New Orleans production refers specifically to the seven games listed by the Saints for 2025.
