Colts Sign Mecole Hardman, Thomas Morstead: Week 7 Roster Impact

The Indianapolis Colts added wide receiver Mecole Hardman and punter Thomas Morstead to their practice squad Tuesday, giving the team experienced options at two positions that suddenly carry Week 7 significance.

The timing matters. Indianapolis is preparing to visit the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, October 25, while punter Rigoberto Sanchez is dealing with a foot injury and return specialist Anthony Gould is in the concussion protocol. Neither signing guarantees a game-day role, but both players give the Colts practical contingency plans.

What the Colts added

Hardman brings speed, return experience and a championship résumé. The three-time Super Bowl champion has 178 receptions for 2,302 yards across 82 regular-season games, and he most recently spent time with Buffalo. His 2025 role was limited to two games, when he returned two punts and one kickoff.

Morstead is one of the league’s most experienced punters. He averaged 43.6 yards on 44 punts for San Francisco in 2025, according to NBC Sports. At 40, he is a ready-made veteran option rather than a developmental addition.

Hardman’s likely role

The practice-squad designation is important: Hardman has not been added to the 53-man roster, so fantasy managers should not assume he will play in Minnesota. His shortest path to an immediate job is on returns, especially if Gould is unavailable.

On offense, Hardman profiles as situational speed and motion depth. Indianapolis would still need to elevate or sign him to the active roster, then decide how much of the playbook he can handle on short notice. That makes any Week 7 offensive projection highly speculative.

Why Morstead may matter immediately

Sanchez left Sunday’s loss to Tennessee with a foot injury after his punt was blocked and returned for a touchdown. Adding Morstead gives Indianapolis an experienced fallback while the club evaluates Sanchez.

Punter changes rarely drive mainstream fantasy decisions, but they can influence field position, coverage units and a defense’s scoring environment. If Sanchez cannot play, Morstead’s experience should reduce the operational risk of making a late-week change.

Week 7 impact at Minnesota

The Colts visit the Vikings at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The transaction gives Indianapolis flexibility without forcing an immediate 53-man roster move. The next meaningful signals will be Sanchez’s practice participation, Gould’s concussion status and whether either veteran is elevated by Saturday.

Hardman would be most relevant if the Colts need a returner and a limited package of speed-based offensive snaps. Morstead becomes the more direct replacement candidate if Sanchez is ruled out.

Fantasy football and special-teams impact

Hardman is not a standard-league add. In very deep leagues that award return yardage, he belongs on a watch list only after a game-day elevation and a confirmed return role. His arrival does not materially change the Week 7 outlook for Indianapolis’ established fantasy starters.

Morstead has no standard individual fantasy value, but Colts D/ST managers should monitor the punter decision because clean special-teams execution and field position affect defensive opportunity. The key takeaway is depth and insurance, not an automatic role change.

What to watch next

Three developments will determine whether these moves become game-relevant: the final injury designations for Sanchez and Gould, Saturday’s practice-squad elevations, and the Colts’ announced returner and punter assignments. Until then, both additions should be treated as contingency moves with clear paths to Week 7 utility.
