Cowboys at Colts Week 9 Preview: Protection, Response and the Road Path

6 min read

Football Nation's early call is Dallas 27, Indianapolis 20. The Cowboys have the steadier quarterback and a more reliable downfield passing structure, while the Colts are trying to stabilize an offense that has turned the ball over 15 times in eight games. The uncertainty is meaningful: Dallas just lost a 14 point fourth quarter lead, Indianapolis is evaluating every role after a 35 point defeat, and the first official Week 9 practice reports had not yet been filed at this cutoff.

Official game information

Sunday, November 8, 2026. Dallas Cowboys at Indianapolis Colts. Kickoff is noon Central, 1 p.m. Eastern, at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. FOX has the television broadcast. The official team schedules also list local radio coverage and NFL+ game access. Indianapolis lists the game as a White Out. The stadium roof and window decision remains a game day checkpoint.

Where both teams stand

Dallas is 3 and 5 after a 33 to 30 overtime loss to Arizona. Indianapolis is 2 and 6 after a 42 to 7 loss at Jacksonville. The Colts have lost four straight. Dallas has alternated wins and losses over its last five games, so the matchup is not as simple as one team carrying stable momentum.

The recent series favors Dallas. The Cowboys have won four of the last five meetings and won the most recent one 54 to 19 in 2022. This is Dallas' first visit to Lucas Oil Stadium since 2018. That history supplies context, not a prediction, because the personnel and competitive stage are different.

The Dallas path

Dak Prescott enters Week 9 with 2,046 passing yards, 14 touchdowns and five interceptions. He completed 19 of 29 passes for 195 yards and one touchdown against Arizona, but Dallas allowed four sacks. The clearest Dallas path is to protect Prescott, force Indianapolis to defend the full width of the field, and make CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens win against isolated coverage. Lamb has 709 receiving yards and six touchdowns. Pickens has 533 yards and two scores. Those two targets give Dallas the best answer when a defense crowds the run box.

Dallas still needs a credible rushing threat. Javonte Williams has 528 yards and eight rushing touchdowns, but Arizona held him to 56 yards on 24 carries. The Cowboys should not abandon the run, because play action and manageable third downs matter, but empty volume is not the same as control. Dallas needs efficient early down runs or quick throws that function like runs.

The defensive concern is obvious. Dallas recorded five sacks and two takeaways against Arizona, then allowed touchdowns on four straight late regulation possessions. Tyler Allgeier rushed for 147 yards on 11 carries, with 143 of those yards after halftime. The result creates a direct Week 9 question: can Dallas keep its rush lane discipline and tackle Jonathan Taylor before he reaches the second level?

The Indianapolis path

Indianapolis must build the game around Taylor without becoming predictable. He has 610 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 148 carries. A strong Taylor start would shorten the game, protect the quarterback and force Dallas to hesitate before attacking downhill. If the Colts fall behind and become a pure dropback team, Dallas can turn Quinnen Williams and the edge rush loose.

Daniel Jones has 1,542 passing yards, five touchdowns and nine interceptions. He threw for 144 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions in Jacksonville. Indianapolis entered Week 9 with 15 total turnovers in eight games. The first Colts task is therefore not explosive creation. It is eliminating the short fields and defensive scores that made the Jacksonville game unrecoverable.

The offensive line is also working through a major change after Indianapolis traded guard Quenton Nelson to Seattle. Rookie Jalen Farmer was identified by the Colts as a possible option at left guard. On defense, the Colts also traded DeForest Buckner to San Francisco. Those moves remove two foundational veterans and put more responsibility on developing players. Dallas should test the new interior combinations early with movement, stunts and a balanced pressure plan.

Three matchup levers

The three most important levers are protection, ball security and box count. Dallas wins the first lever if Prescott has time to reach Lamb and Pickens. Indianapolis wins the second by finishing drives without giveaways. The third belongs to the offense that can run well enough to keep the opponent from dictating every obvious passing down.

Injuries, availability and replacements

As of 6:30 p.m. Central on Monday, November 2, the official Week 9 practice reports were not yet available. Dallas coach Brian Schottenheimer said rookie defensive back Caleb Downs is in the concussion protocol. Tight end Jake Ferguson and cornerback Joey Porter Jr. were scheduled for additional testing after ankle injuries, while safety P.J. Locke also left the Arizona game. These are not final game designations.

Indianapolis' Week 8 report listed Anthony Gould and Justin Walley out, while Andrew Ogletree and Bryce Boettcher carried uncertain Friday designations. Those Week 8 labels do not automatically carry into Week 9. The Colts' first Cowboys practice report, later updates and Friday game designations are the controlling evidence.

Fantasy football impact

For full PPR fantasy formats, Prescott is a starting quarterback because Dallas' pass volume and receiver quality create a strong ceiling. Lamb is a locked in starter, and Pickens is a high end flex with touchdown upside. Williams remains an RB2 on volume, but his Week 8 efficiency is the warning. Ferguson is startable if he clears the ankle evaluation; Brevyn Spann Ford becomes the name to monitor if Ferguson is limited or out.

Taylor remains the Colts player to trust most and should be treated as an RB1 on role. Josh Downs is a volume based flex, especially if Indianapolis trails. Tyler Warren remains a viable tight end option because the Colts need middle of the field answers, but scoring expectations should stay modest until the offense demonstrates cleaner quarterback play. Jones belongs in superflex consideration only, not standard one quarterback starting plans.

Market and weather checkpoint

A public Pro Football Reference snapshot checked at 6:30 p.m. Central on November 2 listed Dallas minus 5.5 with a total of 51.5. This is a published snapshot, not an executable live quote. No reliable public moneyline was verified in this check, so none is stated here. Football Nation's price sensitivity is simple: Dallas is more defensible at six points or better, while the total is a pass until the Week 9 injury reports clarify both offenses.

Weather should not drive the early analysis because Lucas Oil Stadium has a retractable roof and window. The meaningful checkpoint is the team's announced roof status. If conditions move indoors as expected, surface, protection and execution matter more than wind or rain.

Football Nation prediction

Football Nation prediction: Cowboys 27, Colts 20. Dallas has the more efficient quarterback profile, the better proven receiver pair and a pass rush that can challenge a changed Indianapolis interior. The fact that would change the call is a cluster of Dallas absences in the secondary or at tight end combined with a clean Colts practice week.

Strongest counterargument

The strongest counterargument is Indianapolis' upset script. Taylor can attack a Dallas defense that just surrendered 202 rushing yards, the Colts can compress the game, and one early takeaway could turn the crowd and force Dallas back into the high pressure situations it failed to close against Arizona. If Indianapolis reaches halftime even or ahead without a turnover, the Cowboys' advantage narrows sharply.

Official Cowboys field goal context

Dallas' official X account highlighted Brandon Aubrey's 41 yard field goal against Arizona. Special teams remain a real late game edge, but Dallas must avoid asking the kicking game to cover for another defensive collapse.

Game day checklist

Game day checklist: confirm the Friday injury report; track Ferguson, Downs, Porter and Locke; confirm the Colts' offensive line; verify the inactive list about 90 minutes before kickoff; check the Lucas Oil Stadium roof and window announcement; refresh the market snapshot; and watch whether Dallas opens with protection help or trusts its tackles immediately.
