Damien Lewis Injury Adds to Panthers’ O-Line Risk vs. Packers

The Carolina Panthers’ offensive-line outlook for Thursday night at Green Bay became more complicated Monday. Left guard Damien Lewis (knee) and reserve guard Torricelli Simpkins III (ankle) were listed as projected nonparticipants, while starting right tackle Taylor Moton has already gone to injured reserve with a fractured fibula.

Important context: Carolina held a walkthrough, so every Monday participation level was an estimate. Lewis and Simpkins have not yet been ruled out. That distinction matters for both game analysis and fantasy decisions.

Quick read

New concern: Lewis and Simpkins were both estimated as nonparticipants on Monday, reducing the margin for error along the interior line.

Existing absence: Moton is on injured reserve, and rookie Monroe Freeling is set to handle the right-tackle role again.

Fantasy takeaway: Do not bench Bryce Young or Chuba Hubbard because of one projected report, but lower the offense’s efficiency expectations if Lewis remains out when Carolina holds a full practice.

What the Panthers’ Monday estimate says

The Panthers’ official Week 8 report listed five projected nonparticipants. Two were guards: Lewis with a knee issue and Simpkins with an ankle issue. Bryce Young, who is managing a knee issue, was projected as a full participant.

That creates an important distinction. Young’s availability currently looks encouraging, but the protection around him is less settled. The depth-chart problem is not simply the loss of one veteran tackle; it is the possibility of multiple changes across the same five-man unit on a short week.

Why Damien Lewis matters

Lewis played 43 of Carolina’s 56 offensive snaps in the Week 7 loss to Tampa Bay, according to the team’s official snap-count review. Robert Hunt and Rasheed Walker played all 56 snaps, while Freeling logged 33 after Moton exited. Those numbers show how quickly the Panthers had to reshuffle personnel during the game.

Lewis is the listed starter at left guard. Simpkins is one of the interior depth options. If both are unavailable, Carolina would have fewer experienced answers if another lineman needs a break or leaves Thursday’s game. The Panthers have not announced an alternate starting combination, so any specific replacement plan would be speculation.

Monroe Freeling gives Carolina one stabilizing factor

Freeling is a rookie, but he is not walking into an entirely unfamiliar assignment. He started the first four games of the season at right tackle while Moton was unavailable. Carolina’s Week 8 depth chart moved Freeling back into the starting spot, with Stone Forsythe listed behind him.

That experience is the strongest counterargument to assuming the entire line will unravel. Freeling has already prepared and played as a starter, and two weeks of watching Moton’s preparation may help. The larger risk is continuity: changing right tackles while also potentially losing the starting left guard creates more communication stress than either move would produce alone.

Game impact against Green Bay

Carolina has limited turnaround time before Thursday night. If Lewis cannot practice, the offense may need to protect the line through quicker throws, additional tight-end help and a more selective approach to longer-developing concepts. Those are logical adjustments, not confirmed elements of the game plan.

The practical matchup question is whether Carolina can keep the offense on schedule. Negative plays become more damaging when protection combinations are changing, especially on the road. A healthy Lewis would preserve more of the Panthers’ normal run and play-action menu; an absence would make down-and-distance management even more important.

Fantasy football impact

Bryce Young: The projected full participation is a positive availability signal. Still, Young belongs in the QB2 range until the line picture becomes clearer. In superflex formats he remains usable, but managers should expect a lower floor if Lewis is inactive alongside Moton.

Chuba Hubbard: Hubbard played 34 of 56 offensive snaps in Week 7. His role keeps him in flex consideration, but a thinner line would reduce confidence in rushing efficiency and touchdown opportunities. Volume matters more than one walkthrough estimate, so this is a modest downgrade rather than a panic bench.

Packers D/ST: Green Bay becomes a more appealing streaming option if Lewis misses a full practice or receives an inactive designation. The case is conditional: a projected Monday DNP by itself is not enough to treat the matchup as a lock.

What to watch next

The most useful update will be Carolina’s first full-practice participation report. Watch whether Lewis and Simpkins move from estimated DNP to limited or full work, and whether the team offers any lineup clues. The final game-status report will determine whether this is routine short-week management or a genuine multi-player line problem.

Bottom line

Moton’s injured-reserve move already forced Carolina to reset at right tackle. Lewis and Simpkins appearing as projected nonparticipants now make the interior line the next pressure point. The report is not a declaration that either guard will miss Thursday, but it is enough to move the Panthers’ protection plan, Young’s fantasy floor and the Packers defense onto the Week 8 watch list.
