David Njoku’s return is no longer a distant injury note. The Los Angeles Chargers opened his 21 day practice window Wednesday, and the veteran tight end was limited in both Wednesday and Thursday sessions. That progress creates two separate decisions before Sunday: whether Njoku is ready for the active roster and, if he is, how his routes fit beside Oronde Gadsden and Charlie Kolar.

Two limited practices narrow the decision

Njoku played the first two games of the season and caught six passes for 67 yards before going to injured reserve after Week 2. Head coach Jim Harbaugh said Monday that opening the window was likely, and the club did so Wednesday. The Thursday injury report then recorded a second straight limited practice. That is meaningful participation, but it is not an activation or a game status.

Friday final report: the Chargers list Njoku as limited for a third straight practice and doubtful for Sunday against Houston. Doubtful means he is unlikely to play, not ruled out, and he still needs an active roster transaction because he remains in the return process from injured reserve. A Saturday roster transaction and Sunday’s final inactive list are the next evidence.

Gadsden has earned more than a placeholder role

Oronde Gadsden enters the decision with fresh production. The Chargers’ Friday player to watch feature says he led the team with five receptions in Week 8, gained a season high 52 yards and converted three catches into first downs. Twenty nine of those yards came after the catch. A returning veteran should expand the passing menu, not automatically erase the work that has made Gadsden the team’s second leading receiver by receptions.

That efficiency is especially useful for an offense that has not scored a touchdown since the third quarter of Week 5, according to the club’s Week 9 overview. Gadsden does not need to become the entire answer. He does need to remain part of a route plan that rewards first down production rather than treating every returning veteran as a one for one replacement.

Activation changes personnel, not just a depth chart

The unofficial Week 9 depth chart lists Charlie Kolar as the starter, with Gadsden and Hayden Rucci behind him, because Njoku remains in the return process. If Njoku is activated, Los Angeles can use more two tight end presentations, move a receiver out of the formation without becoming one dimensional and create different matchups in the red zone. If he is not activated, Gadsden’s Week 8 usage remains the clearest passing game plan at the position.

The most practical version could be role specialization. Kolar can handle attached alignment and blocking work, Gadsden can retain routes that create yards after the catch, and Njoku can be introduced in selected passing situations if the medical and football staffs clear him. That would reduce the need to force a full workload immediately while still adding a veteran receiving threat.

Fantasy consequence, counterargument and next checkpoint

In half PPR formats, Gadsden is the safer current option because his role exists on live evidence, while Njoku remains a hold after the doubtful designation until activation and route volume are confirmed. The strongest counterargument is that doubtful is not out, and a cleared Njoku could immediately command high value targets because his yards after catch and red zone skills are exactly what a struggling offense needs. The next checkpoint is a Chargers roster transaction Saturday, followed by Sunday’s final inactive list.

For real football, the consequence is broader than fantasy. Los Angeles is 0 and 7 and needs more successful early down passes, more red zone answers and fewer long yardage situations. A healthy Njoku could help all three, but activating him without preserving Gadsden’s productive role would exchange one possible solution for another instead of expanding the offense.

Sources and comparison period

Primary sources checked Nov. 6, 2026 at 11/06/2026, 17:05:37 CST: the Chargers’ official Friday injury table lists Njoku limited for a third straight practice and doubtful for Sunday; the NFL Friday news roundup also lists him doubtful. The NFL consolidated Week 9 page still lists him questionable, so this update follows the club’s official filing. Additional sources are the Chargers’ Thursday Week 9 report, Harbaugh’s Monday return window update, Friday’s Gadsden feature and the current unofficial depth chart.
