Donte Jackson, Rodney Shelley Inactive vs. Rams: Fantasy Impact

The Los Angeles Chargers will face the Los Angeles Rams without cornerbacks Donte Jackson and Rodney Shelley, both of whom were declared inactive after entering Sunday with hamstring injuries. The late decision leaves an already depleted Chargers secondary without safety Derwin James Jr. and defensive back Deane Leonard.

That matters immediately for fantasy football. Matthew Stafford enters the matchup with two productive perimeter weapons in Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, while Los Angeles must redistribute coverage snaps to a thinner group shortly before the 3:05 p.m. CST kickoff.

Why the Chargers secondary is short-handed

Jackson and Shelley were limited in all three practices and carried questionable designations into Week 8. The official inactive list then confirmed neither would dress. Leonard had already been ruled out with a concussion, and the Chargers placed James on injured reserve Saturday because of a hamstring injury.

The Chargers prepared for the shortage by signing cornerback Isas Waxter to the active roster and elevating veteran Kaiir Elam from the practice squad. Elam has started 19 of 43 career regular-season games, but his elevation does not guarantee a full-time role. The key early-game signal will be whether the Chargers use him outside, lean on more zone coverage or rotate extra safety help toward the Rams’ top receivers.

This is a personnel squeeze, not proof that the Chargers cannot defend the pass. Through six games, their defense had allowed 1,297 passing yards and five passing touchdowns while intercepting five passes. The concern is that those season-long results were produced with a healthier back end than the one available Sunday.

What it means for Matthew Stafford and the Rams receivers

Stafford entered Week 8 completing 187 of 278 passes for 1,989 yards, 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions, a 67.3% completion rate and a 94.2 passer rating. He also had thrown multiple touchdowns in four of his previous five games, including three in the Week 7 win over Las Vegas.

Nacua had 45 catches for 485 yards and two receiving touchdowns in five appearances, plus 21 rushing yards and another score. Adams had 30 receptions for 480 yards and four touchdowns. Their contrasting profiles can stress a short-handed secondary: Nacua wins through volume and intermediate separation, while Adams had averaged 16.0 yards per reception and supplied the more established touchdown production.

The inactive news raises the ceiling of the Rams passing game, but it does not guarantee a shootout. The Chargers entered Sunday 0-6, and the Rams were 3-4, so game script could tilt toward Kyren Williams and Blake Corum if Los Angeles builds a lead. The strongest conclusion is about coverage quality and target efficiency, not a promise of extra pass attempts.

Fantasy football start-sit impact

• Puka Nacua: Treat him as a high-end WR1. His volume was already strong, and the Chargers’ reduced cornerback depth creates fewer proven answers if the Rams move him across the formation.

• Davante Adams: He remains a strong WR2 with clear WR1 upside in touchdown-heavy formats. Jackson and Shelley being unavailable makes it harder for the Chargers to preserve favorable matchups across both boundary spots.

• Matthew Stafford: The matchup moves Stafford into a stronger starting range for one-quarterback leagues and makes him especially attractive in superflex formats. Managers should still account for the possibility that the Rams control the game without needing maximum passing volume.

• Kyren Williams and Blake Corum: Their roles do not shrink because of the secondary news. A more efficient passing attack could create additional red-zone possessions, although fantasy managers should not assume a specific carry split from the inactive list alone.

• Chargers pass catchers: The defensive injuries do not directly change Ladd McConkey or Tre’ Harris, but a Rams lead could increase second-half passing volume for Justin Herbert. The counterweight is a Chargers offensive line that is also missing starting guard Kayode Awosika.

What to watch after kickoff

Watch the Chargers’ first two defensive series for Elam’s alignment, the amount of safety help over Nacua and Adams, and whether Stafford attacks the replacement cornerbacks vertically. If Los Angeles is forced into repeated single-high looks, both Rams receivers gain additional big-play appeal in live fantasy and daily formats.

Also separate opportunity from results. One early Rams completion against a replacement defender can reveal a deliberate matchup plan, but it is not enough to project the entire game. Snap locations, target distribution and red-zone usage will be more useful than a single explosive play.

Factual cutoff: Nov. 1, 2026, before the Chargers–Rams 3:05 p.m. CST kickoff. This article reports the confirmed inactive list and pregame fantasy implications; it is not a game recap.
