Dallas Goedert catches two touchdowns, Jalen Hurts delivers a crucial scramble, and Philadelphia stops Washington’s tying conversion attempt.

2026 NFL Week 1 · Final: Washington Commanders 22, Philadelphia Eagles 24. Official team coverage · AP game report

Philadelphia won the final collision

The Eagles' opener ended with a defender meeting the moment at the line of scrimmage. Moro Ojomo stopped Washington's two point conversion attempt with 1:01 remaining, preserving a 24 to 22 Philadelphia victory after the Commanders had spent the fourth quarter threatening to reverse the game. Jalen Hurts threw three touchdowns, and Dallas Goedert caught two of them.

Washington kept producing answers late, but Philadelphia had built just enough margin through explosive plays and timely finishing. The game offered an encouraging first look at the Eagles' passing combinations and a reminder that a narrow division win can depend as much on one defensive reaction as on the quarterback's entire statistical afternoon.

A scramble preserved the winning touchdown drive

After Washington closed to 17 to 16, Hurts faced third and 18 and escaped for 22 yards. The conversion kept Philadelphia on the field at a moment when a punt would have handed the Commanders a chance to take the lead. Hurts later connected with Goedert for a 43 yard touchdown, stretching the margin to eight.

Jayden Daniels then found Antonio Williams for a one yard touchdown with 1:01 left. Washington needed two more points to tie. The shovel pass to John Bates met Ojomo immediately, and Philadelphia survived. The Eagles' decisive offensive and defensive plays were both responses to situations that could easily have ended differently.

Big gains did the heavy lifting

Dontayvion Wicks' 64 yard reception helped set up Goedert's first touchdown, a 17 yard catch. Saquon Barkley added a 42 yard run before Wicks caught a nine yard scoring pass. Philadelphia repeatedly used a large gain to make the final stretch of a scoring drive more manageable.

Hurts finished with 203 passing yards on only 14 completions and added 46 rushing yards. Philadelphia gained 318 yards overall to Washington's 295. Those totals were close enough that the conversion attempt, a blocked extra point and individual extended drives had outsized influence on the final score.

The supporting receivers changed the picture

Goedert caught four of five targets for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Wicks caught two of four for 73 yards and a score. DeVonta Smith added three catches for 53 yards on six targets. Philadelphia did not require one receiver to monopolize the passing game to create explosive opportunities.

Daniels completed 18 of 34 attempts for 164 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions, while adding 31 rushing yards. Williams caught all four targets for 64 yards and a touchdown. Stefon Diggs caught four passes for 55 yards and a score, but his celebration penalty pushed Washington away from an earlier two point attempt. Jalen Carter had also blocked an extra point before halftime.

Fantasy touchdowns need target context

Goedert's two touchdowns were valuable, but they came on five targets. Wicks produced 73 yards on two catches. Both performances show scoring and explosive potential, while also warning against treating Sunday's touchdown rate or yards per catch as a normal weekly outcome. Smith's six targets were the largest total among the Eagles receivers listed here.

Barkley ran 15 times for 83 yards, with the 42 yard gain accounting for a substantial portion of the total. Washington's Jacory Croskey Merritt carried 16 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. Daniels' rushing involvement added value even in a modest passing game. Williams' perfect four catch afternoon merits attention, though Diggs drew more targets with nine.

Postgame injury update: Reuters reported early Tuesday that Philadelphia is placing three-time Pro Bowl left guard Landon Dickerson on injured reserve because of a lingering knee injury, requiring him to miss at least four games. The Eagles’ official transaction page had not yet listed the move when Football Nation checked, so this remains a reported transaction rather than a team announcement. Rookie Drew Kendall is among the internal replacement options. Dickerson’s absence materially raises the importance of Philadelphia’s Week 2 protection and interior run blocking against Tennessee.

Football Nation verdict

Philadelphia found enough explosive offense and one final defensive stop to win a demanding division opener. Washington's late response was encouraging, but points lost around conversion opportunities and penalties proved costly. The Eagles visit Tennessee next, while the Commanders head to Dallas. For Philadelphia, the challenge is turning these explosive flashes into steadier control. For Washington, it is preserving the late offensive improvement while eliminating the avoidable obstacles around the scoring plays.
