Eagles Sign Joe Milton From Cowboys: What It Means for Week 6
The Philadelphia Eagles are adding quarterback Joe Milton III from the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, giving them another active roster option after Jalen Hurts was ruled out for Sunday against the Carolina Panthers.
Tanner McKee remains the confirmed Week 6 starter. Milton is not arriving to take that assignment. The move gives Philadelphia short term depth at the most important position while Hurts begins treatment for a superficial blood clot in his calf.
Information checked October 16, 2026 at 4:02 PM Central. The signing was reported by NFL.com and confirmed from the Dallas side by the Cowboys official team site. Philadelphia had not yet posted Milton on its public transactions page at the information cutoff.
Why Philadelphia made the move
The Eagles announced Thursday that Hurts will not play against Carolina. According to the team, Hurts first received treatment after being cleated during the October 4 game against the Los Angeles Rams. An ultrasound performed in London revealed a superficial blood clot. A follow up ultrasound Wednesday night showed movement in the clot, and Philadelphia ruled him out while doctors determine the appropriate course of treatment.
That left McKee as the starter and rookie Cole Payton as the other quarterback in the room. Adding Milton gives Philadelphia a third option without asking a newly arrived player to learn the full offense in two days.
Dallas says Milton must join the Eagles active 53 man roster for at least three games because Philadelphia signed him from another team's practice squad. That makes this more than a one day emergency elevation.
Tanner McKee still owns the Week 6 start
Philadelphia has been direct about Sunday's plan. McKee will make the third start of his NFL career and his first that is not a regular season finale.
McKee has shown enough in limited work to deserve the first opportunity. The Eagles official profile credits him with 30 completions on 45 attempts for 323 yards and four touchdowns across two games in 2024. In 2025, he completed 24 of 43 passes for 274 yards, one touchdown and one interception.
Those numbers do not guarantee that Philadelphia's offense will operate exactly as it did with Hurts. McKee does not bring the same designed rushing threat, and the offense may need to win with timing, protection and manageable third downs. Still, the Eagles have prepared McKee inside this system for four seasons. Milton is the new depth option, not the Week 6 starter.
What Joe Milton adds
Milton brings rare arm strength and some mobility. New England selected him in the sixth round of the 2024 NFL Draft. In his lone regular season appearance as a rookie, he completed 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards and a touchdown and added a rushing score against Buffalo.
He appeared in four games for Dallas in 2025, completing 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. The Cowboys waived him before the 2026 season after choosing Sam Howell as Dak Prescott's backup, then brought Milton back on the practice squad.
Milton also produced a strong 2026 preseason. Dallas reported 29 completions on 43 attempts for 378 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions across three games. Preseason production is not the same as regular season readiness, but it explains why Philadelphia viewed him as useful developmental depth.
The immediate challenge is time. Milton must learn Philadelphia's terminology, protections, alerts and operational details while the Eagles are already preparing for Carolina. If he dresses Sunday, a limited emergency package is more realistic than a complete offense.
What the move means for Dallas
Dallas loses a developmental quarterback it valued enough to retain on the practice squad. The Cowboys still have Howell behind Prescott, so their Week 6 game plan at Green Bay does not change. The loss matters more for future depth and for the information Milton can bring to Philadelphia before the division rivals meet Monday night in Week 7.
That Week 7 angle is interesting, but it should not be exaggerated. Milton can help Philadelphia understand Dallas terminology and personnel habits, yet the Cowboys know he was inside their building and can adjust their signals and preparation.
Fantasy football impact
Milton should not be started in normal one quarterback fantasy leagues. He is not expected to start Sunday and has no verified offensive role beyond emergency depth.
In superflex and dynasty formats, Milton is only a speculative bench option for managers with unusually deep rosters. His path to snaps depends on McKee struggling or being unavailable and on Hurts remaining sidelined. Philadelphia has not announced a timetable for Hurts, so fantasy managers should not turn a depth signing into a long term medical prediction.
McKee is the relevant Week 6 quarterback. He is a desperation superflex starter, not a preferred one quarterback streamer. The larger fantasy question is how Philadelphia's pass catchers function with a different quarterback and whether the offensive line and running back group can give McKee manageable situations.
DeVonta Smith returned to limited practice Thursday after missing Wednesday with hamstring and toe issues. Dontayvion Wicks, Dallas Goedert and the rest of the receiving group need to be judged on their own availability, but the move from Hurts to McKee lowers the certainty of Philadelphia's passing volume and touchdown efficiency.
What to watch next
The first checkpoint is Philadelphia's final Friday injury report and the corresponding roster move that creates Milton's active roster spot. The second is Sunday's inactive list, which will show whether Milton dresses behind McKee. The third is any medical update on Hurts after his treatment plan is established.
If McKee plays well, Milton can spend the next several weeks learning the offense as the third quarterback. If Philadelphia needs another starter before Hurts returns, Milton's practice progress becomes much more important.
Football Nation takeaway
Philadelphia did not sign Joe Milton to replace Tanner McKee on Sunday. The Eagles signed him because Hurts is out, the quarterback room became thin, and an athletic developmental passer was available inside the division.
For Week 6, McKee is the starter and Milton is insurance. For Week 7, the move creates a fascinating Cowboys reunion. For fantasy managers, the correct response is restraint: start neither Milton nor a medical assumption about Hurts. Watch the official roster, McKee's performance and Philadelphia's next health update.
