Eric Murray Elbow Injury: Jaguars Week 9 D/ST and IDP Impact

4 min read

Jacksonville's 42-7 win over Indianapolis came with a potentially important short-week injury: starting safety Eric Murray hurt his elbow on the opening kickoff and was ruled out. The Jaguars visit Baltimore on Thursday, Nov. 5, leaving only four days for the veteran to recover.

Jacksonville has not announced a diagnosis or return timetable. Until the team issues an estimated practice report, Murray should be treated as questionable rather than assumed in or out. His availability matters beyond the box score because fellow safety Antonio Johnson was inactive in Week 8 with an ankle injury.

What happened to Eric Murray?

Murray was injured on the opening kickoff. Rayuan Lane III replaced him and produced the game's biggest defensive play, taking a tipped pass 92 yards for a touchdown late in the second quarter. Jacksonville finished with four sacks and three takeaways while improving to 5-2.

The immediate football takeaway is encouraging: the Jaguars did not have to simplify the defense after losing Murray. The fantasy takeaway needs more caution. One explosive return does not erase the communication and coverage strain created when a defense loses a starting safety on a short week.

Jaguars safety depth chart after Murray's injury

Jacksonville's first published depth chart listed Murray ahead of Lane and rookie Jalen Huskey. With Johnson unavailable Sunday, Lane, Huskey and Kaevon Merriweather all played meaningful snaps against the Colts.

  • Rayuan Lane III is the most direct replacement. He now has 20 tackles and the 92-yard interception touchdown this season.

  • Jalen Huskey offers big-play upside. The 2026 third-round pick recorded a sack against Indianapolis after finishing his final college season with four interceptions and 72 tackles.

  • Kaevon Merriweather is the deeper rotational option. He entered Week 9 with 10 tackles and added two tackles plus a quarterback hit in the win.

Murray has 15 tackles this season, according to Jacksonville's current team-stat page. That modest total limits his value in shallow IDP leagues, but his role remains more secure than the raw tackle count suggests.

Fantasy football impact: Jaguars D/ST

Jacksonville D/ST remains playable against Baltimore, especially in leagues that reward sacks and takeaways. The Jaguars just generated four sacks and three turnovers, and Baltimore enters the short week with major uncertainty at quarterback.

Lamar Jackson is headed to injured reserve and thumb surgery, Tyler Huntley left Sunday's game with a toe injury, and rookie Joe Fagnano finished while dealing with a foot issue. Fagnano went 10-of-21 for 91 yards with an interception and three sacks. That instability raises Jacksonville's ceiling even if Murray cannot play.

The risk is volatility on the back end. If both Murray and Johnson are unavailable, Jacksonville would rely heavily on Lane and Huskey against Zay Flowers, who leads Baltimore with 608 receiving yards. The Jaguars D/ST is a startable but not automatic top-tier option until both teams release their first Week 9 participation estimates.

Ravens skill-player outlook

  • Derrick Henry remains Baltimore's safest fantasy starter. He has 632 rushing yards and eight touchdowns, and a depleted safety group can create more second-level running lanes. Quarterback uncertainty, however, could allow Jacksonville to crowd the box.

  • Zay Flowers has the clearest matchup boost if Murray and Johnson sit. His 608 receiving yards lead the Ravens, and inexperienced safeties would increase the chance of coverage mistakes after the catch.

  • Rashod Bateman and Mark Andrews are more quarterback-dependent. Bateman has 288 receiving yards and Andrews has 218; both belong in the wait-for-practice-news tier rather than receiving an automatic upgrade.

IDP waiver-wire impact

Lane is the priority speculative add in leagues that require defensive backs. His playing-time path is immediate, his 20 tackles provide a usable floor, and the pick-six showed the splash-play ceiling. Huskey is a deeper big-play dart, while Merriweather is best left on watch lists unless Jacksonville rules out multiple safeties.

Murray is a hold only in deeper DB-required formats while the elbow is evaluated. Managers in shallow IDP leagues do not need to carry an injured safety with 15 tackles through five appearances when higher-volume linebackers and safeties are available.

What to monitor before Jaguars vs. Ravens

  • Jacksonville's first estimated participation report, especially Murray and Antonio Johnson.

  • Whether Lane works with the starting defense throughout the short week.

  • Baltimore's quarterback plan after injuries to Jackson, Huntley and Fagnano.

  • Thursday's inactive list, released about 90 minutes before the 8:15 p.m. ET kickoff.

Bottom line

Murray's elbow injury creates a real depth-chart change, but it does not automatically remove Jacksonville D/ST from fantasy lineups. The Jaguars' pass rush and Baltimore's quarterback emergency keep the matchup attractive. Lane is the best IDP replacement to add now, while Flowers is the Raven most likely to benefit if Jacksonville reaches Thursday without both starting safeties.
