Giants at Texans Week 7 Guide: Houston's Pass Rush Tests New York's Control

9 min read

Houston has the higher ceiling in this matchup, but New York's fourth-quarter response against New Orleans shows why the game is less comfortable than the early spread suggests. The 2-4 Texans bring a disruptive pass rush, a more efficient passing attack and home field. The 3-2-1 Giants counter with long possessions, Malik Nabers' volume and a quarterback decision that now includes J.J. McCarthy after his late rally. Football Nation's call remains Houston 24, New York 20.

The central question is whether New York can stay on schedule. Houston has 18 defensive sacks through five games, second in the NFL entering Week 6, while the Giants have allowed 13 sacks. Manageable third downs can shorten the game. Obvious passing situations can let Will Anderson Jr. and the Texans front control it.

Week 6 Houston update

Update checked October 18, 2026 at 5:10 PM Central: Houston beat Jacksonville 34-31 at Wembley Stadium to improve to 2-4. C.J. Stroud completed 24 of 34 passes for 312 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, Jaylin Noel produced 107 receiving yards and a touchdown, and Ka'imi Fairbairn won it with a 49-yard field goal as time expired. New York fell to 3-2-1 after a 34-27 home loss to New Orleans. The Giants trailed 34-10 before J.J. McCarthy led a 17-point fourth-quarter rally that ended at the Saints' 14-yard line.

Official game details

New York Giants at Houston Texans, Week 7 of the 2026 regular season. Kickoff is Sunday, October 25 at 12:00 PM Central, 1:00 PM Eastern, at Reliant Stadium in Houston. FOX has the television broadcast. The Texans list 95.7 The Fan for local radio and the Giants list WFAN. Streaming access depends on local FOX and authenticated provider availability, so check the official game page and NFL Ways to Watch on game day.

The Texans designate this as their Battle Red game. Reliant Stadium has a retractable roof. The early Houston forecast checked Sunday morning calls for mostly cloudy conditions near 71 degrees at noon and the middle 70s during the game window. Roof status remains the more important checkpoint.

Records, standings and travel

The Giants are 3-2-1 after losing 34-27 to New Orleans, but remain in the NFC East race. Their last six results now include wins over Dallas, Tennessee and Arizona, a tie at Washington, losses to the Rams and Saints, and a Week 6 finish that created new quarterback uncertainty. New York hosted in Week 6 and now travels to Houston.

Houston is 2-4 after beating Jacksonville 34-31 at Wembley Stadium on October 18. The Texans have won two straight, but the transatlantic return still gives them the harder recovery into Week 7. New York is 3-2-1 after its comeback fell short against New Orleans, and the Giants must evaluate both quarterbacks before traveling.

Team comparison

The official NFL pages through Week 5 show New York at 21.8 points and 308.2 yards per game, compared with Houston at 22.0 points and 340.8 yards. New York owns the possession edge at 34 minutes and 1 second per game, second in the league. Houston is at 30 minutes and 17 seconds. The Texans lead the sack comparison 18 to 8, while the Giants lead interceptions 6 to 2.

TeamRankings captures the style difference. New York gains 4.7 yards per play, ranked 25th, but converts 44.29 percent of third downs, ranked eighth. Houston gains 5.4 yards per play, ranked 14th, but converts 37.88 percent of third downs, ranked 19th. The Giants sustain drives better than their per play number suggests. The Texans create more chunks.

The rushing split favors Houston's defense. TeamRankings lists the Texans at 3.3 yards allowed per rush and 78.4 rushing yards allowed per game, both top three figures. New York averages 3.7 per rush. The Giants defense allows 5.2 per rush, ranked 30th, but Houston's offense averages only 3.4. Houston has the matchup opportunity, not proof it can exploit it.

New York scores touchdowns on 64.29 percent of red zone trips, compared with 55.56 percent for Houston. The Texans defense allows touchdowns on 58.33 percent of red zone trips, while New York allows 69.23 percent. Houston's best defensive outcome is to turn long Giants possessions into field goals.

Quarterbacks and passing game

C.J. Stroud entered Week 6 with 1,402 passing yards, a 64.3 completion rate, 6 touchdowns and no interceptions. In London he completed 24 of 34 passes for 312 yards, 3 touchdowns and 1 interception. Adding that official game line to the published five-game baseline produces 1,714 yards, 9 touchdowns and 1 interception pending the league stat-table refresh. His first interception ended the zero-pick start, but the winning drive reinforced Houston's late-game passing ceiling.

The Giants quarterback picture changed during Week 6. Jameis Winston threw one touchdown and two interceptions before J.J. McCarthy replaced him. McCarthy passed for 243 yards and two touchdowns while leading a 17-point fourth-quarter rally, but his final drive ended on downs at the New Orleans 14. The performance gives New York a real Week 7 decision; neither the starter nor the snap distribution should be assumed before the team's official update.

Malik Nabers leads New York with 29 catches for 329 yards and 2 touchdowns. Isaiah Likely leads the club with 33 catches and has 4 scores. Houston's published Week 5 baseline had Nico Collins at 19 catches for 249 yards and 3 touchdowns, Dalton Schultz at 24 for 244, Xavier Hutchinson at 16 for 231 and Jaylin Noel at 13 for 227. Noel then delivered 107 receiving yards and a touchdown against Jacksonville. Marvin Harrison Jr. made his Texans debut, but official snap and route participation remain the more useful Week 7 checkpoint than a one-game box score.

Scheme and personnel keys

Houston's clearest path is pressure without heavy blitzing. Anderson has 7.5 sacks, Danielle Hunter has 3 and Sheldon Rankins has 2. The Texans can collapse the pocket while keeping enough defenders in coverage to bracket Nabers and close throwing windows for Likely.

New York's clearest path is possession plus a takeaway. Condensed formations, quick throws, play action and quarterback movement can keep Houston from attacking a fixed launch point. Cam Skattebo leads the Giants with 294 yards on 81 carries, only 3.6 per attempt, so short passes may need to function as part of the run game.

Houston also has to solve its ground attack. Woody Marks has 149 yards on 43 carries and David Montgomery has 138 on 52. If the Texans cannot punish New York's vulnerable run defense, Stroud will carry more of the scoring burden than the favorite's price implies.

Injuries and replacements

The official Week 7 reports are not available. These are Week 6 baselines, not Week 7 designations. New York ruled out cornerback Colton Hood, tight end Theo Johnson and safety Tyler Nubin against New Orleans. Abdul Carter, Jermaine Eluemunor and Andrew Thomas were questionable after limited Friday practices. Isaiah Likely, Darnell Mooney, Najee Harris and Jason Pinnock finished as full participants. Greg Newsome II remained limited.

Houston ruled out Tank Dell, David Montgomery and Jalen Pitre for the London game. Ja'Marcus Ingram and Henry To'oTo'o were questionable after full practices Thursday and Friday, then were activated before Week 6. Azeez Al Shaair, Trent Brown and Jake Hansen finished as full participants.

Likely is the Giants tight end beneficiary if Johnson remains out. Nubin's status affects secondary communication. Any absence for Thomas or Eluemunor magnifies Houston's edge advantage. Marks gains touches if Montgomery remains unavailable, while Pitre's absence changes Houston's safety rotation. Harrison's debut can redistribute targets throughout the Texans offense.

Market snapshot

A public comparison board checked October 18 at 8:19 AM Central showed Houston minus 7.5 at minus 110, New York plus 7.5 at minus 110, a total of 41.5 at minus 110 on both sides, and moneylines of Houston minus 360 and New York plus 285. This was a published comparison, not a guaranteed executable quote.

eDraft showed Houston minus 7 after previously displaying minus 7.5, with the total moving from 42.5 to 41.5. At 7.5 and 41.5, the implied score is about Houston 24.5, New York 17.0. Football Nation agrees with Houston as the winner but gives New York more offensive credit. Houston is more attractive below minus 7. New York is more attractive at plus 7.5 or better.

Player workload watch

No authenticated legal sportsbook prop menu was available at the factual cutoff. These are Football Nation decision thresholds, not quoted market lines.

C.J. Stroud passing yards: an over becomes interesting at 245.5 or lower if Houston's Week 6 protection holds. The case against it is a low total and a game led by the Texans defense.

Nico Collins receiving yards: 64.5 is the early evaluation point. His 13.1 yards per catch supports the ceiling, but Harrison's integration can widen the target tree.

Marvin Harrison Jr. receptions: wait for the London snap share. A threshold of 3.5 requires clear route participation before an over makes sense.

Woody Marks rushing yards: 49.5 or lower is playable only if Montgomery remains out or limited. The Giants matchup helps, but Houston averages only 3.4 per rush.

Malik Nabers receiving yards: 69.5 is the preferred over threshold. A number in the high 70s prices in too much against a defense that can create pressure without sacrificing coverage.

Isaiah Likely receptions: 4.5 is reasonable only if Theo Johnson remains out. Likely leads New York in catches, but Houston's pressure can shorten drives.

Cam Skattebo rushing attempts: an over at 15.5 needs a competitive script. Efficiency is uncertain, but New York must run enough to keep the pass rush honest.

Fantasy football outlook

Scoring format: half point per reception. Start Stroud as a low end QB1 or strong streamer. Start Collins as a WR2, though Harrison adds target competition. Schultz remains a deeper league tight end start. Harrison remains a volatile flex until official Week 6 snap and route data clarifies whether his debut role can support stable volume. Marks is a flex if Montgomery remains sidelined.

Nabers remains a volume-based WR2 after catching 12 passes for 165 yards against New Orleans. Isaiah Likely is a starter if Theo Johnson remains out and more matchup dependent if both are active. Cam Skattebo is a volume flex, not an efficiency bet. McCarthy and Winston belong in superflex formats only until the Giants name a Week 7 starter.

Houston's defense is a strong start because sacks create a floor. The Giants defense is a contrarian streamer only in formats that heavily reward interceptions. Stroud's low-turnover profile still limits its ceiling, although he threw his first interception of the season in London.

Football Nation prediction

Prediction: Texans 24, Giants 20. Houston's pass rush is the most dependable unit in the matchup, and Stroud's passing ceiling gives the home team a cleaner path. New York's fourth-quarter rally, Nabers' volume and third-down offense should keep the margin inside the early public spread, but three Week 6 interceptions and an unsettled quarterback plan make the upset harder to trust.

Strongest counterargument: Houston returns from London, its run game averages only 3.4 per carry and the Giants have six interceptions. A slow Texans start could leave too few possessions to justify a touchdown favorite price.

Upset path: New York holds Houston below 4 yards per rush, creates one short field and gets at least six catches from Nabers while allowing no more than three sacks. A material Week 6 injury to Stroud or multiple Houston linemen would change the call. Confirmed absences for Thomas and Eluemunor would push the projection toward Houston by more than one score.

Game day checklist

Both Week 6 finals are incorporated. Add official snap counts and postgame injury updates, then read the Week 7 practice reports, especially the Giants tackles, Carter, Johnson and Nubin, plus Montgomery, Pitre, Dell and Houston's linebackers. Confirm New York's quarterback. Check Marvin Harrison Jr.'s route share. Verify the roof and forecast. Compare the spread with 7 and the total with 41.5. Review official inactives about 90 minutes before kickoff.
