Giants Trade for J.J. McCarthy: Winston Still Starts Week 4
The Giants have acquired J.J. McCarthy from Minnesota for a 2027 fifth round pick, adding a young quarterback after Jaxson Dart’s season ending knee injury. The move changes New York’s depth chart and future options. It does not change the announced Week 4 starter: Jameis Winston remains the quarterback against Arizona.
The Vikings announced the transaction September 28 and the Giants detailed it September 29. Both announcements described the deal as pending a physical. New York’s transaction tracker lists McCarthy as acquired. This report does not claim a separate physical result that the cited teams have not published, or turn his arrival into a starting assignment.

Why the Giants made the move
Football Nation’s view is that New York bought an additional path through the season without requiring an immediate change under center. Losing a starter creates two problems: the offense must function this week, and the roster must remain capable if the replacement also misses time. Winston addresses the first problem. Another quarterback with starting experience helps with the second.
The draft price also matters. A future fifth round choice is a smaller commitment than the premium selections normally associated with acquiring an established franchise starter. That gives the Giants room to evaluate McCarthy without pretending the trade itself has answered their long term quarterback question. An affordable acquisition can still fail, but the cost allows the team to judge him on what he does after arriving rather than on an expensive promise.
John Harbaugh’s announcement separated Winston’s starting role from the backup competition. Jake Haener and McCarthy were both part of that discussion. Learning an offense is more than memorizing the names of plays: a quarterback needs the protection calls, route adjustments and communication habits that keep the rest of the unit coordinated. Football Nation expects those practical requirements to shape the early role, although the team must establish the actual assignment.
What McCarthy’s previous season says
McCarthy was the tenth overall draft pick in 2024 and missed his rookie season on injured reserve. In 2025 he started ten games for Minnesota, which went six and four in those starts. His passing line included 1,632 yards, 11 touchdowns, 12 interceptions and a 57.6 percent completion rate. Those facts show NFL experience and a substantial need for improvement.
The strongest argument for the move is that a young player with experience can develop in a new setting while providing a second viable option. The strongest counterargument is that his previous performance has not established reliable passing efficiency or ball security. Winning starts do not resolve that concern on their own. Quarterback results depend on defense, field position, supporting players and game situation, so the record should be read alongside the individual performance.
Football Nation would evaluate the acquisition through a sequence of football questions. Can he operate the protections without forcing the offense to simplify its whole plan? Can he deliver routine completions on schedule? Can he reduce avoidable turnovers when a play breaks down? Those are evaluation priorities, not claims that the Giants have already measured progress on them. Draft position creates interest; current execution determines usefulness.
Why Minnesota could move him
The Vikings named Kyler Murray their starter in August, and Carson Wentz has also played this season. McCarthy was behind that established pairing when the trade occurred. Minnesota therefore converted a quarterback outside its immediate starting plan into a future selection, while New York acquired a player for a position affected by injury.
That difference in roster needs explains why the same transaction can make sense to both clubs without proving either side has won it. Minnesota gives up another development option and some depth. New York spends a pick and must invest coaching time before the new quarterback can contribute fully. The eventual value will depend on McCarthy’s performance and Minnesota’s use of the selection, neither of which can be known from the announcement.
The Week 4 fantasy consequence
Winston’s confirmed starting role controls current Giants projections. Managers should not upgrade or downgrade New York’s receivers as if McCarthy has already taken over. In leagues that start one quarterback, an immediate speculative addition usually requires a clearer route to playing time. In leagues that start two, and in dynasty formats, McCarthy’s changed opportunity may justify a roster review because future availability has value. That is a format dependent assessment, not a forecast of a starting date.
For Minnesota, this transaction does not itself create a new quarterback decision. Murray remains the announced starter. Jefferson’s separate Week 4 absence is the pressing receiver availability issue and belongs in the injury tracker. Keeping the personnel decisions distinct prevents an interesting trade from overwhelming the actual lineup information for Sunday.
Football Nation conclusion
The Giants addressed a real depth need at a manageable draft cost, but the deal should be evaluated as an opportunity rather than an instant solution. Winston starts against Arizona. McCarthy must establish his role and demonstrate progress inside the offense. The next useful checkpoint is the confirmed game day quarterback order, followed by coaching evidence about his readiness. There is no supported reason to invent a quarterback controversy before those decisions occur.
