How NFL Injured Reserve, PUP and NFI Lists Work

Factual cutoff: October 30, 2026 at 12:07 PM Central. This guide separates the collective bargaining agreement rules from the league procedure that controls roster placement and return timing.

Injured reserve, the physically unable to perform list and the nonfootball injury or illness list can all remove a player from the active roster, but they answer different questions. Injured reserve is generally the in season tool for a football injury. PUP starts with a football condition that keeps a player from practicing when camp opens. NFI covers an injury or illness outside NFL football work. The label affects eligibility, salary rights, contract tolling and the path back to the field.

The quick comparison

List

Why it is used

Roster effect

Key return point

Reserve Injured

A player is unable to play because of an injury

Does not occupy a spot on the 53 player active roster

At least four games before activation

Reserve PUP

A football condition prevented camp participation

Does not occupy a spot on the 53 player active roster

Practice window may open before activation eligibility

Reserve NFI

The condition did not arise from NFL football work

Does not occupy a spot on the 53 player active roster

Return procedure resembles other reserve lists, but pay rights differ

How injured reserve works in 2026

A club uses Reserve Injured when a player cannot currently perform because of an injury. Once the player is on the reserve list, the club can replace him on the active roster. Placement is not a medical forecast by itself. It is also a roster transaction that creates space while the player rehabilitates.

The return path has several checkpoints. The player must miss at least four games before activation. A club may use eight return designations during the regular season, with two additional designations available to a postseason club. An individual player may return from reserve twice in one season, and each return uses one club designation.

The 2026 procedure adds a useful distinction. Reporting on the approved rule change says a player may begin the 21 day practice period after his club has played two games, but he still cannot be activated until after four games. Early practice lets the club evaluate conditioning and contact readiness without shortening the mandatory game absence. When the club opens the window, it must activate the player during that period or the player remains on reserve for the rest of the season.

Timing at the final roster reduction also matters. The Chargers official 2026 roster guide confirms that a club may place up to two players on injured reserve at the cutdown and give them Designated to Return status. Without an allowed return designation, a player placed on reserve before the initial roster is established generally cannot return that season. That is why transaction reports often emphasize whether a player first made the 53 player roster or received a return designation.

How the PUP list works

PUP means physically unable to perform. The player must have a football related condition that prevents him from passing the physical and practicing when training camp begins. A player who has already practiced cannot simply be moved back to PUP because a later injury appears. The club would use another roster category, usually injured reserve, if the later condition is serious enough.

During camp, Active PUP keeps the player on the preseason roster and permits a return whenever he passes the physical. If the player is still unavailable at the final reduction, the club can move him to Reserve PUP. Reserve PUP creates an active roster spot and starts the regular season return process.

The labor agreement adds a pay and contract rule that many summaries miss. Article 20, Section 2 says a player on PUP receives his full Paragraph 5 Salary. His contract ordinarily continues to run. In the final contract year, however, the contract can toll when the player is still unable to perform as of the sixth regular season game and is never reinstated to the Active or Inactive List during that season or postseason. Returning to practice alone does not prevent tolling if the player is never reinstated.

How the NFI list works

NFI means nonfootball injury or illness. It can cover an injury suffered away from club football activity, a condition carried from college into a rookie camp, or an illness that was not caused by NFL work. NFI is not a disciplinary list and it does not prove wrongdoing. It identifies where the condition falls under the roster and contract rules.

A player can begin camp on Active NFI and later move to Reserve NFI if he remains unavailable when the regular season roster is set. The reserve version opens a roster spot, and the league return procedure can eventually permit practice and activation.

The financial difference is substantial. Article 20, Section 3 says a player on NFI is not entitled to contract compensation while on the list, although a club may choose to pay him. The contract generally continues to run, but a final year contract can toll. If the player is physically able to perform on or before the sixth regular season game, the club must pay the negotiated Paragraph 5 Salary for the balance of the season to toll the contract. If the player is removed from NFI during the period allowed by league rules, the contract does not toll.

A simple return decision tree

  • First ask when and where the condition arose. Football work points toward PUP or injured reserve. A condition outside NFL football points toward NFI.

  • Next ask whether the player practiced in camp. A player who practiced cannot later be placed on PUP for that condition.

  • Then identify the transaction date. Placement before or during final reduction can change return eligibility.

  • Watch for Designated to Return. That opens practice access but does not activate the player.

  • Count the 21 day window and the four missed games separately. Both requirements must be satisfied before a regular season return.

Two examples

Example one: an in season starter goes to injured reserve

A starting receiver injures his knee in Week 3 and the club places him on injured reserve. The club signs another receiver because the injured starter no longer occupies a 53 player spot. After two club games, the team may open his practice window under the 2026 procedure. He cannot be activated until he has missed four games. If he practices for 21 days but never reaches the active roster, his season ends on reserve. The football consequence is immediate roster flexibility. The fantasy consequence is that practice is a positive signal, not permission to place him in a lineup.

Example two: a rookie reports with a college injury

A rookie arrives at camp while recovering from a college knee injury and cannot pass his physical. Because the condition did not arise from NFL club football, the team can use NFI. If he remains on Reserve NFI, he does not occupy a 53 player spot. The club may pay him, but Article 20 does not guarantee that salary while he is on NFI. Fantasy managers should wait for a return designation, actual practice participation and an activation transaction before projecting a role.

Common misconceptions

  • Injured reserve does not always mean the season is over. Return eligibility depends on placement timing, available designations and medical progress.

  • PUP is not a list a team can use at any point. It is tied to the player being unable to practice when camp begins.

  • NFI does not mean the player violated a rule. It describes the source of the injury or illness for roster and contract purposes.

  • Designated to Return does not mean activated. It starts a practice evaluation period.

  • Four missed games is a minimum, not a promise. A player can remain out far longer.

Football and fantasy consequences

For a general manager, these lists are tools for balancing recovery against roster depth. A club must decide whether an expected contributor is worth one of its return designations and whether opening a practice window now leaves enough time for a sound decision. The strongest counterargument to aggressive use is simple: early practice can help evaluation, but it cannot guarantee medical clearance or game readiness. A team may protect a designation or roster spot for a player with a clearer path.

For fantasy football, the official transaction matters more than optimistic language. Platform injury slot eligibility is controlled by the fantasy provider, not by NFL roster rules. Treat the return designation as a reason to monitor the player. Treat full practice, activation and game day active status as progressively stronger evidence. Even activation does not guarantee a normal snap count.

Frequently asked questions

Do players get paid on these lists?

A player on PUP receives full Paragraph 5 Salary under Article 20, Section 2. A player on NFI is not entitled to contract compensation under Section 3, though a club can choose to pay. Injured reserve pay depends on the player contract, injury status and any applicable split terms.

Do reserve players count against the 53 player roster?

Reserve Injured, Reserve PUP and Reserve NFI do not occupy a 53 player active roster spot. Active PUP and Active NFI are camp designations and remain part of the preseason roster.

What is the next checkpoint?

Follow the official transaction that opens the practice window, the date of the first practice, the 21 day deadline, the activation transaction and the game day inactive list. If any one of those checkpoints is missing, the return is not complete.
