How the 2026 NFL Dynamic Kickoff Works

The dynamic kickoff places blockers and coverage players close together downfield, then restricts their movement until the ball arrives. Its formation and ball placement rules differ from punts and from college kickoffs.

On an ordinary NFL kickoff, the kicker kicks from the kicking team’s 35. Penalties can alter that spot.
Where everyone lines up
The other ten kicking team players align at the receiving team’s 40. At least nine receiving team players occupy the setup zone between their own 30 and 35.
In 2026, at least five receiving players must have a front foot on the 35 when nine occupy the setup zone. If more than nine occupy it, at least six must be on that restraining line. Additional spacing requirements prevent the group from bunching anywhere it likes.
Players outside the setup zone begin behind the receiving team’s 20. The landing zone extends from that 20 to the goal line.
When movement begins
Coverage players other than the kicker and receiving players in the setup zone cannot launch early. Their restrictions last until the kick touches the ground or a player in the landing zone or end zone. The kicker and deep receivers have their own movement limits.
Watch that first touch. It releases the main blocking and coverage groups and helps determine the kick’s result.
What happens to the ball?
A kick landing in the landing zone stays live. A fair catch does not provide the usual punt option to end the play there.
A live kickoff in the end zone may be returned; reaching the end zone does not itself end the kick. A kick reaching the end zone without first touching the landing zone ordinarily produces a touchback at the 35 if it is downed or goes out behind the goal line. A kick first touching the landing zone and then becoming a touchback goes to the 20. A kickoff from the 50 that becomes a touchback also goes to the 20 in 2026. A kick short of the landing zone or out of bounds between the goal lines triggers different enforcement. On an ordinary kickoff from the 35, the receiving team commonly gets the ball at its 40, subject to its applicable choices.
Onside kicks use a separate procedure
A team may declare an onside kick at any time in 2026, regardless of score. It must notify the referee; the change does not restore a surprise onside kick. Different alignments and recovery restrictions then apply.
