Jake Ferguson Ruled Out With Ankle Injury: Week 9 Fantasy Impact
Dallas Cowboys tight end Jake Ferguson left Sunday's 33-30 overtime loss to the Arizona Cardinals with an ankle injury and was ruled out for the remainder of the game. He did not record a target before leaving.
Dallas had not announced a diagnosis, recovery timetable or Week 9 designation as of 5:09 p.m. CST on Nov. 1. That makes Ferguson a hold rather than a drop in fantasy leagues, while Brevyn Spann-Ford becomes the most useful immediate waiver name in the Cowboys' tight end room.
What happened to Jake Ferguson
Ferguson exited during Dallas' first offensive possession. The Cowboys initially listed him as questionable to return with an ankle injury before ruling him out. The Associated Press game report confirmed that he did not return to the game.
The Cowboys have not said whether Ferguson will undergo imaging or whether the injury is expected to affect the Nov. 8 game at Indianapolis. Fantasy managers should avoid guessing at a multiweek absence until Dallas provides a postgame or Monday update.
Why Ferguson's absence matters
Ferguson entered Week 8 with 17 receptions for 115 yards and three touchdowns in seven games. His 6.8 yards per catch reflected a short-area role, but the three scores kept him relevant in touchdown-dependent and standard tight end formats.
The broader résumé also matters. Ferguson caught 82 passes for 600 yards and eight touchdowns in 2025, and he produced 71 catches for 761 yards in 2023. Dallas has repeatedly trusted him on option routes, underneath concepts and in the red zone even when his weekly yardage has been modest.
Brevyn Spann-Ford led the replacement usage
Spann-Ford took the clearest receiving role after Ferguson exited. He caught four of five targets for 31 yards against Arizona, finishing behind only CeeDee Lamb among Dallas players in receptions. Spann-Ford had entered the game with nine catches for 79 yards on the season.
That five-target workload is more informative than a one-play substitution. It shows that Dak Prescott was willing to use Spann-Ford as an underneath outlet in a competitive game after Ferguson left.
The caution is that four catches for 31 yards still represents a low-yardage role. Spann-Ford is not an automatic top-12 fantasy tight end, and his Week 9 value will depend on Ferguson's status and whether Luke Schoonmaker can return from the groin injury that made him inactive Sunday.
Where Luke Schoonmaker and James Mitchell fit
Dallas listed Schoonmaker behind Ferguson and Spann-Ford on its unofficial depth chart, but Schoonmaker did not play against Arizona because of a groin injury. If he practices fully this week, he could split routes, blocking work and red-zone snaps with Spann-Ford.
James Mitchell was elevated from the practice squad and recovered a Javonte Williams fumble in the end zone for a touchdown. The score was important to the game but does not establish a bankable receiving role: Mitchell was not targeted. He remains a watch-list player rather than a fantasy starter.
Week 9 fantasy football plan
Jake Ferguson
Keep Ferguson rostered and move him to a bench or injured-reserve slot if your platform allows it. The correct next decision point is Dallas' first formal update, followed by Wednesday's practice report. A limited practice would keep him in the questionable range; a full practice would materially improve his chance to play.
Brevyn Spann-Ford
Spann-Ford is a priority only in deeper leagues, tight end premium formats and rosters that need an emergency Week 9 option. His four-catch response to Ferguson's exit creates a reasonable path to three to six targets if Ferguson and Schoonmaker are unavailable. In ordinary one-tight-end leagues, treat him as a TE2 streamer rather than a must-start player.
Luke Schoonmaker and James Mitchell
Schoonmaker is a speculative watch because his own injury could prevent a clean replacement role. Mitchell's fumble-recovery touchdown should not drive waiver spending without evidence of routes and targets.
Dak Prescott and the Cowboys receivers
Ferguson's absence would create a modest concentration boost for Lamb, George Pickens and Ryan Flournoy, but it does not automatically transform the passing game. Lamb saw 11 targets and caught seven passes for 58 yards Sunday. Spann-Ford absorbed five targets, showing Dallas can keep a tight end in the progression rather than redirect every look to wide receivers.
Cowboys at Colts matchup context
Dallas visits Indianapolis at noon CST on Sunday, Nov. 8. The Cowboys fell to 3-5 after the overtime loss, while the Colts dropped to 2-6 after a 42-7 defeat at Jacksonville.
Indianapolis' record and Week 8 result make the matchup look favorable, but Dallas should not be treated as matchup-proof. The Cowboys scored 30 points against Arizona yet managed only 195 passing yards and 2.4 yards per rush. Ferguson's availability will help determine how much of the middle-of-field and red-zone plan can remain intact.
What to watch next
Watch for four checkpoints: Dallas' postgame or Monday medical update, Ferguson's Wednesday participation, Schoonmaker's groin status and any practice-squad elevation involving Mitchell. If Ferguson misses practice while Schoonmaker returns, a committee becomes more likely. If both are out, Spann-Ford becomes the clear fantasy pickup.
Bottom line
Ferguson's ankle injury is a meaningful Week 9 variable, but the severity is not yet public. Hold Ferguson, add Spann-Ford only where the roster context justifies a TE2 streamer, and wait for Dallas' first practice report before making an aggressive start-sit call.
