Jalen Ramsey Wrist Injury: Week 7 Status After AFC Honor
Jalen Ramsey’s Week 7 status is the newest variable in Pittsburgh’s defensive plan. The Steelers listed the veteran defensive back as a nonparticipant Wednesday because of a wrist injury as they began preparing for Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints in Paris.
The designation is notable, but it is not a final ruling. Pittsburgh has not listed Ramsey as out, doubtful or questionable, and one missed practice does not determine whether he will play. The next participation update matters because Ramsey managed the same wrist issue last week, then delivered one of the best defensive performances of the NFL season.
What the Steelers confirmed
Pittsburgh’s official Wednesday report listed Ramsey as did not participate with a wrist injury. Cornerback Brandin Echols also sat out with a hamstring injury, while linebacker Alex Highsmith was limited by a groin issue and defensive lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day missed the session with a triceps injury.
There was one important positive in the secondary: safety DeShon Elliott, who has been designated to return from injured reserve, practiced fully. A full practice is encouraging, but Elliott still must be activated before he can play. That distinction matters because Pittsburgh’s back-end depth could be tested if Ramsey or Echols cannot go.
Ramsey is coming off a historic defensive line
Hours before the injury report was posted, the Steelers announced that Ramsey had been named AFC Defensive Player of the Week. He produced 10 tackles, nine solo stops, four tackles for loss and two sacks in Pittsburgh’s overtime win over Tampa Bay.
According to the team, Ramsey became the first player since 2023 to record at least 10 tackles, four tackles for loss and two sacks in one game—and the first defensive back to reach that combination in records dating to 2000. His second sack ended Tampa Bay’s overtime possession, dropping quarterback Jalon Daniels for an 11-yard loss on fourth down.
That production also explains why Wednesday’s absence deserves more attention than a routine maintenance day. Ramsey’s value is not confined to coverage. Pittsburgh can deploy him near the line, in the slot or deeper in the secondary, and that versatility helps the defense disguise pressure and coverage before the snap.
Week 7 impact against the Saints
The Steelers and Saints are scheduled to play Sunday at 9:30 a.m. Eastern at Stade de France. Ramsey’s availability could shape how aggressively Pittsburgh attacks from the secondary, especially with multiple defensive backs already on the report.
If Ramsey practices later in the week and avoids a final game designation, Wednesday’s absence will look more like workload management around an injury he already played through. If he remains out or draws a doubtful or questionable tag, Pittsburgh may need more conventional alignments and a larger role for its reserve cornerbacks.
Elliott’s progression is the counterweight. His possible return would restore an experienced safety, but it should not be treated as a direct replacement for every job Ramsey performs. The most useful signal will be the combination of Ramsey’s participation, Elliott’s activation status and Echols’ hamstring progress.
Fantasy football and IDP takeaway
Steelers D/ST managers should hold rather than react to one Wednesday practice. Pittsburgh still has its established pass-rush core, and the unit’s turnover and sack paths do not depend on one player. Ramsey’s absence would lower the defense’s ceiling, however, because his ability to blitz, tackle in space and disguise coverage creates splash-play chances that ordinary box-score projections miss.
In IDP leagues, Ramsey remains a high-upside defensive back if active. His 10-tackle, two-sack performance shows the ceiling, but managers should not project sacks as a weekly baseline. The practical move is to keep a Sunday-morning replacement available until Pittsburgh issues a final designation and the inactive list confirms his status.
What to watch next
The next two practice reports will show whether Ramsey returns in a limited or full capacity. Fantasy managers should also watch for Elliott’s activation and any improvement from Echols, Highsmith and Joseph-Day. Because the Paris game starts early Sunday, lineup decisions need to be settled before the main afternoon slate.
For now, the correct label is uncertain—not unavailable. Ramsey played through the wrist issue last week and dominated, but a fresh nonparticipation means his Week 7 workload cannot be assumed.
