Jaylon Moore Concussion Leaves Chiefs Thin at Tackle: Week 7 Impact
Kansas City left its 22-6 win over the Los Angeles Chargers with a new question at offensive tackle. Starting right tackle Jaylon Moore entered the concussion protocol during the second quarter and did not return, placing his Week 7 availability in doubt as the Chiefs prepare for a prime-time trip to Seattle.
Moore has started all five games for the 5-0 Chiefs this season, according to Reuters. Joshua Ezeudu replaced him at right tackle before halftime and stayed in the lineup after the break. Kansas City has not announced a return timetable, and concussion-protocol progress is individualized.
The immediate concern is larger than one position. Left tackle Josh Simmons has not played this season because of a back injury, although he returned to limited practice last week. Kansas City therefore enters Week 7 with uncertainty at both ends of the offensive line.
What happened against the Chargers
Moore left just before halftime. Arrowhead Pride reported that Ezeudu took over and that head coach Andy Reid confirmed Moore had sustained a concussion. Ezeudu was on the field for the final three plays of the half, a possession that ended with Harrison Butker’s 50-yard field goal.
The Chiefs still controlled the game, holding Los Angeles without a touchdown and moving to 5-0. That result shows the line could function after the change. It does not guarantee the same setup will be sufficient against Seattle, especially if Kansas City needs Ezeudu to make his first start for the team on the road.
Joshua Ezeudu is the immediate replacement
Kansas City acquired Ezeudu from the New York Giants in August for a 2028 seventh-round pick. The Chiefs’ official announcement noted that he had appeared in 33 games over four NFL seasons before the trade.
Ezeudu brings experience, but most of it has come on the left side. He entered Sunday with 10 career starts and only a handful of regular-season snaps at right tackle. He did practice at both right tackle and right guard during the preseason, which gives Kansas City a recent foundation for the emergency assignment.
The strongest counterargument to treating this as a crisis is that Ezeudu already finished a winning game and Kansas City’s staff has a full week to build protections around him. The concern is that Seattle can now prepare specifically for the replacement, while Ezeudu would be working next to the starting right guard for an entire game rather than responding to an in-game injury.
Josh Simmons’ status affects the whole plan
Simmons returned to limited practice on October 14 after a bulging disc in his lower back kept him out of the first four games. Reid said the Chiefs intended to ease him back, according to Reuters. Simmons remained inactive against the Chargers, with undrafted rookie Kahlil Benson continuing at left tackle.
If Simmons is cleared for Week 7, Kansas City could regain flexibility. Benson or Simmons might remain on the left while Ezeudu handles the right, or the staff could consider moving pieces based on practice performance. If Simmons and Moore are both unavailable, the Chiefs would again be relying on Benson and Ezeudu as the two starting tackles.
That does not mean a lineup change is certain. It means the first Week 7 practice report matters at two positions, not one.
Fantasy football impact
Patrick Mahomes: Mahomes remains a must-start fantasy quarterback. One tackle injury should not push an elite quarterback out of lineups, but it can change how the offense creates time. Expect Kansas City to consider quicker throws, running back or tight end chips, and selective movement of the pocket if Moore cannot play.
Chiefs receivers and Travis Kelce: Short and intermediate targets may become even more important if the line needs help. That can support catch volume for Kelce and the underneath passing game, although his own ankle soreness is a separate Week 7 checkpoint. Longer-developing routes carry slightly more protection risk if both tackle spots remain unsettled.
Kansas City running game: A depleted tackle group does not automatically reduce the rushing outlook. The Chiefs ran effectively after Moore’s exit against Los Angeles. Still, outside runs and perimeter blocking would deserve extra scrutiny if a replacement is making his first start at right tackle.
Seattle D/ST: This is a watch-list upgrade, not an automatic start recommendation. The case improves if Moore is ruled out and Simmons remains inactive. If both tackles return or practice fully, the protection concern becomes much smaller.
Week 7 schedule and decision points
Kansas City visits Seattle on Sunday, October 25, at 7:20 p.m. CT on NBC, according to the official Chiefs schedule. The late kickoff creates a fantasy-management issue because some replacement options will already have played by the time final inactive lists are released.
The first practice report will show whether Moore has advanced far enough to participate. Limited work would be a positive step but would not equal clearance. Simmons’ participation level and any additional tackle elevation or roster move will help reveal Kansas City’s contingency plan.
For fantasy managers, the practical approach is to keep Mahomes and the primary Chiefs playmakers in lineups while monitoring the line as a risk modifier. For Kansas City, the key is whether at least one of Moore or Simmons is available—and whether Ezeudu receives a full week of work on the right side.
