2026 NFL Week 1 · Final: New York Jets 23, Tennessee Titans 10. Official team coverage · AP game report

The Jets kept the game on their terms

New York's opener was built on the kind of football that makes a stadium feel quiet long before the final whistle: repeated first downs, a productive lead back and a quarterback who rarely gave the opponent a clean chance to change the game. The Jets beat Tennessee 23 to 10 as Geno Smith's return and Breece Hall's 102 rushing yards drove a controlled performance.

The Titans never led. Their late touchdown reduced the margin without changing the central story. New York gained 367 yards to Tennessee's 195 and made Robert Saleh's first game coaching against his former team a frustrating lesson in how difficult it is to recover when the opponent keeps possessing the ball.

Nineteen plays of patience

A 19 play Jets possession consumed nearly 12 minutes during the first half. A drive that long does more than move the scoreboard. It keeps an opposing offense waiting, tests a defense's discipline and rewards a team willing to keep taking the available gain. The Jets led 10 to 3 at halftime.

Hall's four yard touchdown in the third quarter stretched the lead to 17 to 3. Jason Sanders then connected from 51 and 52 yards as New York moved ahead 23 to 3. Cam Ward's 11 yard touchdown pass to Elic Ayomanor arrived with 2:42 left, too late to turn the afternoon into the competitive finish Tennessee needed.

Smith supplied efficiency without fireworks

Smith completed 19 of 24 attempts for 215 yards, with no touchdown passes and no interceptions. That line can look modest in a fantasy box score. In this game it was an effective description of the assignment: avoid waste, keep the offense ahead of the chains and let the ground game finish opportunities.

The Jets did not allow a sack. Tennessee's Ward was sacked three times and averaged only 4.4 yards per attempt. The contrast between a comfortable passer and a repeatedly disrupted one helps explain the 172 yard gap in total offense. New York's defense did not have to dominate every snap to keep Tennessee from assembling enough successful ones.

Hall led a useful supporting cast

Hall carried 22 times for 102 yards and a touchdown, then added two receptions for 16 yards. Braelon Allen contributed 40 rushing yards on 10 carries. The Jets could keep asking the backfield for work without relying on Hall alone for every rushing attempt.

Garrett Wilson caught six of seven targets for 79 yards. Adonai Mitchell caught all three of his targets for 60, including a 40 yard gain. Rookie tight end Kenyon Sadiq scored the opening touchdown on a three yard run and added three receptions. For Tennessee, Carnell Tate and Wan'Dale Robinson each finished with 38 receiving yards. No Titans receiver produced the kind of explosive afternoon that might have overcome the possession problem.

Passing yards in the team table are net of sack yardage. Quarterback passing yards are gross. Receiving targets and player roles describe this game; they are not season projections.

Fantasy opportunity is clearer than the points

Hall's 24 combined carries and catches support confidence in his central role. Allen's 10 carries still matter, particularly when estimating how the Jets might distribute work in a different game script. Wilson's seven targets were useful and productive, although Smith attempted only 24 passes in a game New York controlled.

Tony Pollard carried seven times for 35 yards. That is not an efficiency collapse; it is a volume problem. Tennessee's short possessions and deficit restricted the available work. Sadiq's rushing touchdown is interesting, but managers should track whether those designed opportunities recur before projecting a weekly scoring role. Omar Cooper Jr.'s ankle injury and Minkah Fitzpatrick's groin injury need follow up team reporting.

Football Nation verdict

The Jets supplied a coherent performance across offense, defense and special teams. They protected Smith, fed Hall and repeatedly made Tennessee start over. The Titans need longer drives and fewer early errors before their new structure can be judged on equal terms. New York hosts Green Bay next; Tennessee hosts Philadelphia. The Jets have an opening formula worth repeating, while the Titans must first give themselves enough possessions to compete.
