Jets Place Kiko Mauigoa on IR, Sign Jaden Keller Before Dolphins Game

The New York Jets reshaped their linebacker depth one day before hosting the Miami Dolphins. New York placed Kiko Mauigoa on injured reserve Saturday and signed rookie Jaden Keller from the practice squad to the active roster. The club also elevated linebacker Troy Reeder and offensive lineman Brant Banks for Sunday’s Week 7 game.

The move matters more for depth and special teams than for fantasy lineups. Mauigoa had played 26 special teams snaps across three games this season, and the Jets’ official depth chart listed him behind Demario Davis. Keller and Reeder now give New York two available options for coverage units and emergency linebacker snaps while Mauigoa begins another absence.

What happened to Kiko Mauigoa

Mauigoa’s quad problem has interrupted most of his second season. The Jets said he played in the first two games, missed the next three with a quad injury, returned against New England in Week 6 and then sustained another quad injury in that game. He did not practice Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and was ruled out before the roster move became official Saturday.

The 2025 fifth-round pick has 45 tackles in 15 career games, including eight starts. That résumé makes his loss more significant than his limited 2026 snap total suggests: New York is removing a young defender with real starting experience from the immediate rotation, not merely replacing a one-week practice-squad elevation.

Why Jaden Keller received the active-roster spot

Keller’s promotion is the next step after three game-day elevations. The 6-foot-3, 235-pound rookie was elevated for games against Chicago, Cleveland and New England, exhausting the temporary role the Jets had used to cover earlier injuries. He originally joined the team after a rookie minicamp invitation and recorded 10 tackles plus a pass defensed during the preseason.

Signing Keller to the 53-man roster gives the Jets continuity. He has already practiced in the system and dressed in each of the past three games. The important Sunday question is not whether he knows the assignment; it is how many defensive snaps, if any, New York gives him beyond special teams.

Troy Reeder adds the veteran floor

Reeder is the more experienced short-term option. The Jets credited him with 339 career tackles, 12 tackles for loss, five sacks, three forced fumbles and 12 passes defensed in 110 games. He appeared in four games for New York earlier this season and logged four tackles on 84 special teams snaps.

That background makes Reeder a useful game-day stabilizer, but an elevation is not a promise of a full defensive workload. Demario Davis and Jamien Sherwood remain the established linebackers. Keller and Reeder are best viewed as depth and special-teams reinforcements until the Jets show a larger role.

What Brant Banks changes up front

Banks, a 6-foot-7, 306-pound lineman, was elevated from the practice squad as New York manages uncertainty on the offensive line. Max Mitchell was ruled out with a concussion, while Dylan Parham entered the weekend questionable with a knee injury. Banks offers emergency size and position-group insurance, but Sunday’s inactive list will determine whether he dresses and how the Jets arrange their backup line.

Week 7 impact against Miami

The Jets enter Sunday 2-4 and host the 0-5 Dolphins at 1 p.m. Eastern at MetLife Stadium. The immediate impact is roster stability: New York now has Keller on the active roster, Reeder available through a game-day elevation and Banks available if the offensive line needs another body.

On defense, the transactions should help the Jets preserve their special-teams structure instead of pulling an established starter into extra coverage snaps. Against Miami, that matters because field position can decide a low-margin divisional game. The move does not change the Jets’ top defensive matchup plan, but it reduces the risk that one additional injury creates a severe depth problem.

Fantasy football and IDP takeaway

There is no meaningful change for standard offensive fantasy leagues. Keller and Reeder are not startable individual defensive players based on the roles established so far. Managers in deep IDP formats should leave both on waivers unless Sunday’s snap counts show one of them joining the regular defense.

The Jets D/ST remains a matchup-based option against Miami, but this transaction alone is not a reason to move it up rankings. Mauigoa’s absence is a small negative for depth, while Keller and Reeder mainly protect the floor on special teams. The larger fantasy checkpoints remain the final status of Breece Hall and New York’s offensive line, plus Sunday’s inactive lists.

Bottom line

New York made a practical response to a recurring injury: Mauigoa goes to injured reserve, Keller receives a permanent roster opportunity, Reeder supplies veteran game-day depth and Banks provides offensive-line insurance. Keller’s first active-roster stint is the most interesting long-term development, but the Week 7 expectation should stay modest until the Jets reveal his defensive workload.
