The Detroit Lions moved quickly after Teddy Bridgewater stepped away, agreeing to add veteran quarterback Josh Dobbs, according to Reuters’ August 9 report and a matching Pride of Detroit report. The reported one-year contract is worth $1.425 million with $475,000 guaranteed.
One important status note: Detroit had not posted an official Dobbs transaction when this article was prepared Sunday evening. The agreement is supported by reputable national reporting, but the roster move and final contract terms remain subject to the club’s announcement. Bridgewater has already been placed on the reserve/retired list.
Detroit needed an experienced No. 2
Bridgewater had been positioned as Jared Goff’s veteran backup throughout the offseason. The Lions’ official quarterback preview described a room built around Goff, Bridgewater and undrafted rookie Luke Altmyer. Once Bridgewater stepped away, Detroit was left with an established starter and a promising rookie who has never taken an NFL snap.
Dobbs fills the experience gap without changing the top of the depth chart. Reuters credits him with 27 NFL appearances, 15 starts, 3,346 passing yards, 17 touchdown passes and 15 interceptions. He also has 515 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, production that gives Detroit a different style of reserve behind Goff.
The move is also a reunion. The Patriots’ official Dobbs biography lists a brief stay on Detroit’s practice squad in December 2022 before Tennessee signed him to its active roster. He has since started games for Tennessee, Arizona, Minnesota and San Francisco, then spent the 2025 season in New England.
Why Dobbs is a logical short-notice fit
Dobbs’ career has repeatedly required fast adaptation. Arizona acquired him shortly before the 2023 season and started him eight times. Minnesota then traded for him on October 31, and he entered its November 5 game after only a few days with the team. That history does not guarantee immediate success in Detroit, but it is directly relevant to the job in front of him: learn enough of a new offense to function by Thursday.
Detroit opens the preseason at Cincinnati on August 13, according to the team’s official preseason schedule. Goff is not expected to carry the evaluation workload of an exhibition opener, making the timing meaningful. Altmyer needs developmental snaps, while Dobbs needs live repetitions to demonstrate command, timing and protection control.
The reported guarantee is modest enough to preserve competition. It compensates Dobbs for joining late and learning quickly, but it does not require the Lions to hand him the backup job without evaluation. Altmyer can still win trust through preseason performance, and Detroit can decide whether carrying two or three quarterbacks best serves the final 53-man roster.

Detroit should build his package around defined reads, movement throws and selective quarterback runs instead of asking him to reproduce every layer of Goff’s timing-based operation.
What the signing means for Luke Altmyer
Football Nation analysis: Dobbs’ arrival should help Altmyer more than it hurts him. The rookie no longer has to be treated as the only playable option behind Goff, so coaches can judge his progress without forcing a timetable. At the same time, he now has to earn every preseason series and show that developmental upside can coexist with dependable operation.
The most useful split in Cincinnati would give both reserves meaningful situations. Altmyer needs third-down and red-zone work, not just late-game handoffs. Dobbs needs an early series against a coherent defense so the staff can evaluate tempo, protections and how quickly he has absorbed terminology. The goal is evidence, not a predetermined winner.
