Kalia Davis Out for 2026: Browns DT Depth Thins Before Steelers
Cleveland Browns defensive tackle Kalia Davis will remain on injured reserve for the rest of the 2026 season after the team did not activate him before his 21-day practice window expired Tuesday. The decision removes a potential interior-line reinforcement before Cleveland’s Week 8 trip to Pittsburgh.
Factual cutoff: October 28, 2026 at 12:37 AM CDT. Fantasy scoring note: The recommendations below assume half PPR scoring unless stated otherwise.
Davis has not played a regular-season snap this year because of a quadriceps injury suffered during training camp. Cleveland opened his return-to-practice window on Oct. 6, but he did not progress far enough to rejoin the 53-man roster, according to RotoWire’s report.
Why the expired return window ends Davis’ season
Players designated to return from injured reserve receive a 21-day practice window. If they are not activated before that window closes, they remain on injured reserve for the season. Davis could only change teams through a separate transaction such as an injury settlement; Cleveland has announced no such move.
This is different from a routine inactive designation. Davis is not simply questionable for Pittsburgh—he is unavailable for the remainder of Cleveland’s regular-season schedule under his current roster status.
What Cleveland expected from Kalia Davis
The Browns signed Davis to a one-year contract in March after he started all 17 games in 2025. Cleveland’s official signing announcement credited him with 28 tackles, four tackles for loss, two quarterback hits, a half-sack and three passes defensed last season.
That résumé made Davis a plausible part of the nose-tackle rotation, but his injury prevented the Browns from testing the fit in a regular-season game. The impact is therefore about lost depth and a role Cleveland planned to have—not the removal of a player who had already been producing in the 2026 lineup.
Browns defensive tackle depth before Week 8
Cleveland’s Week 8 unofficial depth chart lists Maliek Collins and Mason Graham as the starting defensive tackles. Mike Hall Jr. and Adin Huntington are the listed reserves, while Davis is absent from the active rotation.
The key short-term concern is Hall’s availability. The Week 8 depth chart marks him as injured, so Davis’ inability to return reduces Cleveland’s margin for another absence inside. Sam Kamara and Chris Williams have previously been elevated from the practice squad when the defensive line needed additional bodies.
The strongest counterargument is that Davis’ loss does not change the starting pair. That is true: Collins and Graham remain the top options. But a long season and a physical AFC North matchup make interior depth valuable, especially when Cleveland cannot turn to Davis later.
Fantasy impact for Browns D/ST and Steelers players
This is not a reason by itself to bench the Browns defense. Cleveland’s fantasy value still depends far more on its pass rush, turnover potential and the status of its active starters than on a reserve who has not played this season.
For Pittsburgh, the news is a modest positive for the interior rushing matchup. It does not automatically create a must-start running back or guarantee better efficiency, but it slightly narrows the rotation Cleveland can use against inside runs and short-yardage work.
IDP managers can leave Davis on waivers in redraft leagues. Collins and Graham remain the relevant defensive tackles, while Hall’s practice participation deserves more attention than Davis’ roster status for Week 8 lineup decisions.
Could Cleveland add a defensive tackle?
Davis’ season-ending status arrives two weeks before the Nov. 10 trade deadline. Cleveland does not have to make a move—the active depth chart still includes four defensive tackles—but an injury to another interior lineman could raise the urgency.
A practice-squad promotion would be the simpler solution. A trade would signal that the Browns want a more established rotational option for the second half. Until Cleveland announces an addition, any specific target is speculation.
Week 8 schedule and bottom line
The Browns visit the Steelers on Sunday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. ET on CBS. Davis will not be available, and the matchup focus shifts to the health and workload of Collins, Graham, Hall and Huntington.
Fantasy takeaway: keep the Browns D/ST in the same general tier, monitor Hall’s status, and treat the thinner defensive-tackle rotation as a small matchup boost—not a decisive one—for Pittsburgh’s running game.
