Lions at Dolphins Week 9 Preview: Detroit’s Run Game Meets Miami’s Last Stand

7 min read

Detroit should control this game if its offensive line can absorb a difficult injury week and keep the offense on schedule. The Lions enter 5–2 after beating previously unbeaten Minnesota, while Miami is 1–6 after a second half collapse against New England. Football Nation’s early lean is Detroit because its run game, pass rush and down to down efficiency give it more ways to win. The uncertainty is Detroit’s health on defense and at center, which keeps Miami’s upset path real.

The matchup is Sunday, November 8 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Kickoff is 1 p.m. Eastern and 12 p.m. Central. The current official NFL schedule lists CBS. Hard Rock Stadium is an outdoor venue, so heat, wind and rain remain game day variables even though a stable Sunday forecast was not yet available at this cutoff.

Why Detroit has the early edge

The NFL game center snapshot lists Detroit at 30.7 points and 397.3 yards per game, both second in the league at the current cutoff. Miami is listed at 16.3 points and 293.5 yards per game. Detroit also owns a 21 to 6 advantage in defensive sacks and a plus 3 turnover differential compared with Miami’s minus 3.

Those numbers do not guarantee a comfortable road win. Detroit scored only 19 points against Minnesota and lost several contributors during the game. They do show the basic shape of the matchup: Detroit can win through explosive offense, a closing pass rush or positive field position. Miami has generally needed its defense and run game to create a narrower contest.

Recent form and stakes

Detroit beat Minnesota 19–15 in Week 8 and improved to 5–2. Jahmyr Gibbs ran for 153 yards, Sione Vaki added 65 and the Lions finished with 230 rushing yards. The decisive drive came after Minnesota took a fourth quarter lead. Gibbs and Vaki carried Detroit to the seven yard line before Jared Goff found Jameson Williams for the winning touchdown.

Miami fell 24–19 to New England and dropped to 1–6. Malik Willis completed 21 of 32 passes for 211 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. Ollie Gordon II ran 19 times for 69 yards. Miami led 13–3 at halftime, then allowed three straight New England scoring drives before a late Willis touchdown pass made the finish competitive.

The stakes are different but urgent for both teams. Detroit is in a crowded NFC North race and cannot give away a road game against a one win opponent. Miami needs a complete four quarter performance to keep any plausible postseason path alive and to prove the first half against New England was more than a temporary spike.

The Dolphins’ official postgame checkpoint provides the clearest current summary of their Week 8 result:

Injuries and replacement plans

Detroit’s official Week 9 practice report was not available at this cutoff, so none of the Week 8 injuries should be converted into a Week 9 game designation. The most serious situation is linebacker Jack Campbell’s neck injury. The Lions said Monday that he remained in a local hospital, that preliminary indications were positive and that the team would not share further medical detail out of respect for Campbell and his family.

Detroit also lost center Cade Mays to an ankle injury. Juice Scruggs replaced him against Minnesota and would be the direct continuity option if Mays cannot practice. Brian Branch and DJ Wonnum were ruled out of the Minnesota game after entering concussion protocol. D.J. Reed left with a hip injury, Jimmy Rolder suffered a hamstring injury and Jacob Saylors left with a neck issue. Wednesday participation will be more meaningful than any Monday projection.

Miami’s official Week 9 injury report was also unavailable. The Dolphins’ Week 8 recap did not announce a new game ending injury to a featured offensive player. That leaves Willis, Gordon, Malik Washington, Kevin Coleman Jr. and the offensive line as the expected skill group pending the first practice report.

Detroit offense against Miami defense

Detroit’s clearest path is to force Miami to defend the full width of the formation while keeping Gibbs on a downhill track. The Week 8 finish showed why the Gibbs and Vaki combination matters. Gibbs creates explosive runs and receiving mismatches, while Vaki can preserve tempo and punish lighter boxes. If Detroit can generate efficient early downs, Goff can work from play action instead of asking a potentially reshuffled interior line to hold up in obvious passing situations.

Miami’s answer is to make Detroit earn every drive. The Dolphins forced an early New England turnover, generated pressure with Josh Uche and Chop Robinson and held the Patriots to three first half points. The problem came after halftime, when New England created explosive touchdowns and Miami’s offense could not sustain a response. Against Detroit, a similar ten minute lapse could decide the game.

Amon Ra St. Brown remains the stabilizer for Goff, while Williams supplies the vertical and red zone stress. Miami must tackle immediately after the catch and avoid letting run action pull its second level defenders out of passing lanes. The Lions do not need to chase deep shots if they are winning first down.

Miami offense against Detroit defense

Willis played his best football before halftime against New England, using Gordon’s rushing volume and intermediate completions to keep the offense moving. Miami should reuse that structure. Gordon can test a Detroit front that played well against Minnesota but may be without important second level defenders. Willis also needs defined reads and movement throws that reduce exposure to Detroit’s pass rush.

The matchup changes if Branch, Wonnum, Reed and Jack Campbell are all unavailable. Detroit’s communication, tackling and pressure rotations would be stressed at the same time. Miami’s best upset route is to attack replacements early, stay ahead of the chains and turn one short field into seven points rather than another field goal.

The strongest warning for Miami is protection. Detroit’s current sack total is one of the best in the league, while the Dolphins have not consistently created enough explosive passing plays to erase negative downs. If Aidan Hutchinson and Alim McNeill control the pocket without extra help, Detroit can keep numbers in coverage and force Willis to sustain long drives.

Fantasy football outlook

Scoring format: full point PPR with standard quarterback scoring.

Start Jared Goff as a low end QB1 or strong streamer. The road setting lowers the floor slightly, but Detroit’s scoring profile and Miami’s second half coverage breakdown keep the ceiling intact.

Start Jahmyr Gibbs as an elite RB1. His Week 8 workload and 153 rushing yards reinforce both volume and explosive upside. Sione Vaki is a deeper flex or contingency play rather than an automatic starter, but his 65 yard performance makes him relevant if Detroit again manages Gibbs’ workload or plays from ahead.

Start Amon Ra St. Brown. Jameson Williams is a volatile WR2 or flex with touchdown upside. Miami’s best defensive stretch against New England came when pressure disrupted timing, so both receivers carry more risk if Detroit’s center situation deteriorates.

Treat Malik Willis as a two quarterback league option, not a preferred one quarterback starter. Gordon is a volume based flex. Malik Washington and Kevin Coleman Jr. are deeper PPR options whose value depends on route share and whether Miami can protect long enough to attack Detroit’s injured secondary.

Detroit’s defense is a start with a health caveat because of its sack advantage and Miami’s minus 3 turnover margin. Miami’s defense is a sit in most formats unless the Lions confirm multiple offensive line absences.

Markets and weather

No current legal market price was verified from a publicly accessible source during this run, so Football Nation is not publishing a spread, moneyline or total in this preview. Any later line should be treated as a new time stamped quote, not as an update to an invented opening number.

A stable game day forecast was not yet available. The meaningful weather checkpoints are heat index, wind and thunderstorm risk at Hard Rock Stadium. Those factors matter most for kicking, deep passing and player rotation. They should be checked again Friday and on Sunday morning.

The path for each team

Detroit wins by running efficiently, protecting Goff on third down and forcing Willis to play from behind. A clean first quarter would let the Lions lean on Gibbs and Vaki, shorten the game and keep their injured defense out of extended high leverage snaps.

Miami wins by creating a short field, turning red zone opportunities into touchdowns and attacking Detroit’s replacements before the defense settles. Gordon must keep the offense out of third and long, and Willis needs at least two explosive completions without giving Detroit a turnover.

Football Nation prediction

Football Nation prediction: Lions 27, Dolphins 20.

The strongest counterargument is that Detroit’s injury cluster is concentrated in the middle of its defense and at center, the exact areas Miami can pressure with Gordon and an aggressive front. If Branch, Wonnum, Reed and Jack Campbell are all unavailable while Mays cannot play, this becomes much closer to a one score coin flip.

The fact most likely to change the call is Detroit’s Wednesday injury participation. If the Lions regain multiple defenders and Mays practices, Detroit’s structural edge strengthens. If the absences compound, Miami’s upset path becomes materially stronger.

Game day checklist

• Confirm Detroit’s center and defensive communication plan after the final injury report.

• Check concussion protocol status for Branch and Wonnum.

• Confirm Miami’s offensive line and primary receiver availability.

• Recheck heat, wind and thunderstorm risk at Hard Rock Stadium.

• Add a real time stamped market snapshot only if a public legal source is available.

• Review the inactive list 90 minutes before kickoff.
