Packers vs Buccaneers Prediction: Jalon Daniels Faces His First NFL Start
Tampa Bay is handing its offense to Jalon Daniels, not simply asking its usual starting group to play better. The undrafted rookie will make his first NFL start Sunday with Baker Mayfield ruled out because of a right thumb injury. Green Bay arrives with its own problems after a 35 to 14 loss to Atlanta. Football Nation expects the more established passing operation to have an edge, but the Packers have not earned the right to assume an easy afternoon.
Green Bay, 1 and 2, visits winless Tampa Bay at Raymond James Stadium on Sunday, October 4, at noon CT on FOX. The early October 3 BetMGM snapshot listed the Packers as 3.5 point favorites and the total at 39.5. The club's official preview identifies Daniels as the starter. A quarterback change makes the earlier Tampa Bay offensive averages context rather than a direct prediction of what Sunday's unit will produce.
The three game comparison

|---|---|---|
Record | 1 and 2 | 0 and 3 |
Points per game | 18.7 | 20.7 |
Total yards per game | 315.3 | 279.3 |
Passing yards per game | 266.7 | 185.0 |
Rushing yards per game | 48.7 | 94.3 |
Third down conversion | 27.78% | 32.56% |
Points allowed per game | 30.3 | 26.3 |
TeamRankings' figures describe two offenses that have struggled to sustain possessions, and a Green Bay ground game that has supplied very little production. The passing advantage is substantial, but it has not yet created a high scoring offense. FN's reading is that Green Bay needs efficient completions and fewer failed series, while Tampa Bay needs to make a manageable plan work with a quarterback whose NFL starting sample is still zero.
What Green Bay can ask Jordan Love to do
The Packers have averaged 266.7 passing yards per game while producing just 48.7 on the ground. FN would prefer an opening plan that uses short completions to avoid obvious passing downs, then selects a few opportunities for Christian Watson, Matthew Golden or Tucker Kraft to gain more. That is a proposed approach based on the present production and the players identified in Tampa Bay's preview, not a claim to have seen Sunday's call sheet.
Tampa Bay has allowed 3.1 yards per opponent rush in the early sample. Running into that strength merely to achieve a balanced attempt count would not solve Green Bay's possession problem. The Packers can still use rushing looks and play action to influence defenders, but the pass needs to carry useful early down work. A five yard completion can be more valuable here than another unproductive attempt followed by third and long.
There is also a protection warning. Green Bay ruled out guards Aaron Banks and Jacob Monk, with Jager Burton questionable. FN would watch interior pressure before judging the receivers. A fast developing passing plan is especially useful when the line has to absorb personnel changes. The countercase to the Green Bay pick begins with a free defender reaching Love before an otherwise favorable matchup can develop.
What the rookie quarterback changes for Tampa Bay
The Buccaneers say Daniels won the primary backup job through his work in practices and preseason games. That establishes why he is getting the opportunity; it does not supply an NFL efficiency projection. FN expects Tampa Bay to value clean communication and readable first decisions early. A successful opening possession can give the rookie room to settle in, while a negative play can make the next decision much more difficult.
Bucky Irving finished Friday as a full participant without a game designation. Chris Godwin also practiced fully without a designation. Those are encouraging availability checkpoints for an offense looking for reliable help around its new quarterback. They do not guarantee a particular carry count, target share or fantasy result. FN would watch whether the first few possessions let Daniels distribute the ball without repeatedly extending a play under pressure.
Green Bay's defense has allowed 30.3 points per game, and opponents have scored touchdowns on 83.33% of their red zone visits in the TeamRankings sample. Tampa Bay therefore has a route to points even if its offense looks different. The danger for the visitor is mistaking a first time starter for an offense that cannot finish a possession. FN favors the Packers but does not assume the rookie's introduction will automatically decide the game.
Friday injuries leave both teams work to do
Mayfield, Benjamin Morrison, Reuben Bain Jr. and Ko Kieft are out for Tampa Bay. SirVocea Dennis, Rakeem Nuñez Roches and Jacob Parrish are questionable. The Packers also ruled out defensive linemen Warren Brinson and Anthony Campbell. Linebacker Edgerrin Cooper is questionable after a full Friday practice while working through the listed shoulder and concussion concerns. Final inactives remain the next checkpoint for every questionable designation.
FN would narrow Green Bay's edge if the interior protection cannot function or the depleted defensive front lets Tampa Bay maintain easy second downs. The home team's best script does not require Daniels to throw like a veteran on every possession. It requires the rest of the offense to keep his choices manageable and its defense to make Green Bay earn each scoring opportunity. That is a plausible countercase to the current market.
FN prediction: Packers 23, Buccaneers 17
FN picks Green Bay to win and leans toward the Packers at the quoted 3.5 points. The established passing game supplies the deciding advantage, provided the line can support a quick and disciplined plan. The forecast is subjective analysis, not a model generated win probability. A different spread or a meaningful change in Sunday personnel requires a fresh decision rather than treating the Saturday quote as permanently available.
The first indicator to watch is Green Bay's ability to convert a short third down. The second is whether Daniels can keep Tampa Bay out of immediate recovery mode after a negative snap. Neither team has had the start it wanted. The Packers have the clearer existing passing route to a win, while the Buccaneers have a new quarterback and a home opportunity to change their season's direction.
Football Nation tracks availability separately because a Friday designation and a Sunday active roster answer different questions. Recheck the injury tracker before treating any projected personnel plan as confirmed.
