Packers Promote Coleman Owen to 53-Man Roster: Week 7 Role and Fantasy Outlook
The Green Bay Packers added return-game stability before Sunday’s divisional matchup in Detroit, signing wide receiver Coleman Owen from the practice squad to the 53-man roster on Saturday, Oct. 24. The transaction is more than a routine game-day elevation: Owen now holds a permanent active-roster spot after handling punt-return duties in Week 6.
Green Bay also activated running back Josh Jacobs and defensive tackle Jordon Riley, while elevating edge rusher Arron Mosby for the game. For Owen, the promotion follows a useful first appearance with the Packers and gives the club another option at both returner and wide receiver.
What Coleman Owen has shown
Owen returned one punt for 16 yards in last week’s 23-13 win over Dallas. That was his first game for Green Bay after joining the practice squad on Sept. 30.
His professional sample remains small, but his return production is notable. Owen appeared in two games for Indianapolis in 2025 and logged five kick returns for 141 yards, an average of 28.2 yards per return, plus one punt return for two yards. He has not recorded an NFL reception.
The 5-foot-10, 181-pound receiver entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Colts in 2025. He played 53 college games between Northern Arizona and Ohio, earning first-team All-MAC honors in 2024 after previous All-Big Sky recognition.
Why the Packers made the move
Green Bay did not publicly state that Owen’s promotion was tied to one specific injury, so the safest reading is that the team valued the roster flexibility he provides. Bo Melton is questionable with a back injury, while Matthew Golden, Christian Watson and Savion Williams all appeared on the injury report but did not receive game-status designations.
Owen’s Week 6 usage offers the clearest guide: special teams should be his first path to snaps. Signing him to the active roster, instead of using another standard elevation, also gives Green Bay control of a player who can cover returns and serve as emergency receiver depth beyond one Sunday.
Week 7 impact against Detroit
Expect Owen to be most visible in the return game if he is active. A clean catch and a 16-yard punt return last week earned him another opportunity, and field position can matter in a road divisional game where both offenses are capable of creating scoring pressure.
His offensive role is less certain. Green Bay’s established receivers remain ahead of him, and Owen has no NFL catches entering Week 7. Any offensive snaps would most likely come as depth, motion or package work rather than a featured target share.
Fantasy football outlook
Owen is not a recommended add in standard redraft leagues. There is no evidence yet of a fantasy-relevant target role, and the Packers’ receiver rotation already includes multiple higher-priority options.
He is worth monitoring only in leagues that award individual return yards, extremely deep dynasty formats or formats with dedicated return-specialist slots. Managers in those leagues should confirm Green Bay’s inactive list and scoring rules before kickoff. The promotion raises Owen’s opportunity floor, but it does not create a conventional start decision.
Bottom line
The Packers have turned a one-game audition into a 53-man roster spot. Owen’s immediate job should center on returns, with wide-receiver depth as the secondary benefit. For fantasy managers, this is a watch-list transaction rather than a waiver-wire priority.
