Panthers Place Taylor Moton on IR: Week 8 Fantasy Impact vs. Packers
Factual cutoff: October 27, 2026 at 9:42 PM Central.
The Carolina Panthers placed veteran right tackle Taylor Moton on injured reserve after he fractured his fibula and sustained ligament damage in his ankle during Sunday’s 43-13 loss to Tampa Bay. Rookie first-round pick Monroe Freeling will return to the starting lineup for Thursday night’s Week 8 game at Green Bay.
Moton is expected to undergo a tightrope procedure to repair the ankle damage. His move to injured reserve guarantees an extended absence and removes Carolina’s most experienced offensive lineman from a short-week matchup in which the rest of the line is already dealing with injury questions.
What happened to Taylor Moton
Moton was injured in the third quarter against the Buccaneers when left tackle Rasheed Walker fell across the back of his legs during a block. Carolina coach Dave Canales initially described the injury as a broken fibula and said Moton would be out for a while. The Panthers later confirmed the injured-reserve transaction.
The timing is especially difficult for Moton. He had returned to the lineup in Week 6 after missing Carolina’s first four games while receiving treatment for blood clots in his lungs. He played only two games before the leg and ankle injury sent him back to reserve.
Monroe Freeling becomes the starting right tackle
Carolina’s Week 8 depth chart lists Freeling as the starting right tackle and Stone Forsythe as the backup. Freeling already started the first four games while Moton was unavailable, then finished Sunday’s loss after the veteran was carted off. That experience gives the Panthers a clearer succession plan than a typical midseason injury would, but it still represents a meaningful downgrade in experience.
Freeling also recently dealt with a knee injury and was inactive in Week 6. He was active against Tampa Bay, however, and the Panthers have publicly identified him as Moton’s replacement. The rookie’s ability to hold up on the edge will be one of the most important parts of Thursday’s game plan.
Carolina’s line has more than one concern
Moton is not the only protection issue. Carolina’s Tuesday injury report was an estimated report following a walkthrough, but starting left guard Damien Lewis did not participate because of a knee injury. Reserve guard Torricelli Simpkins III was also listed as a nonparticipant with an ankle injury. Their final Wednesday designations will help determine whether Carolina can keep its preferred interior combination together.
Quarterback Bryce Young was listed as a full participant despite a knee issue. Wide receiver Jalen Coker also improved from limited Monday to full Tuesday, giving the passing game encouraging news even as the offensive line absorbs a major loss.
Week 8 fantasy football impact
Fantasy scoring note: Football Nation uses half PPR scoring unless otherwise stated.
Young’s fantasy ceiling takes a modest hit because pressure off the right edge can force shorter throws and reduce time for deeper concepts. He has completed 135 of 228 passes for 1,712 yards, 12 touchdowns and four interceptions this season, but the combination of a rookie right tackle and uncertain guard availability makes him a riskier Week 8 streamer.
Chuba Hubbard remains startable based on workload and production. He has 459 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 96 carries, an average of 4.8 yards per attempt. Losing Moton can lower the efficiency of outside runs and screen concepts, but it does not remove Hubbard’s volume. Managers should treat him as a volume-based RB2 or flex rather than automatically benching him.
Carolina’s pass catchers also remain usable. Tetairoa McMillan and Coker do not need to be downgraded solely because of one tackle change, though managers should expect the Panthers to use more quick-game throws, chips and tight-end help if Freeling needs protection assistance. Those adjustments can preserve completion volume while reducing explosive-play opportunities.
Nick Hampton’s promotion is a separate roster move
The Panthers used Moton’s roster spot to sign outside linebacker Nick Hampton from the practice squad, but Hampton is not an offensive-line replacement. He had been elevated for Sunday’s game and gives Carolina another healthy edge defender while Jaelan Phillips works through a hamstring injury. Linebacker Ja’Markis Weston was added to the practice squad in the corresponding depth move.
Hampton has little standalone IDP fantasy value until his defensive snap share expands. His promotion matters more for Carolina’s available edge rotation and special teams than for traditional fantasy lineups.
Strongest counterargument
Football Nation view: Freeling started Carolina’s first four games and already knows this role, so Moton’s absence may be less damaging than a typical midseason tackle loss. The counter to that optimism is that Freeling remains a rookie returning from a recent knee issue while the interior line is also managing injuries. Carolina has a credible replacement plan, but the protection floor is still lower without Moton.
What to watch Thursday night
Carolina visits Green Bay on Thursday, October 29 at 7:15 p.m. Central on Prime Video. The most important pregame checkpoints are Lewis’ final status, whether Simpkins is available as interior depth and how much help Carolina dedicates to Freeling on obvious passing downs.
Green Bay also has defensive injuries to monitor. Defensive tackle Devonte Wyatt improved to limited participation Tuesday, while linebacker Zaire Franklin will not play Thursday against Carolina, head coach Matt LaFleur announced. Franklin’s absence could soften the matchup, but it does not eliminate the protection challenge created by Moton’s injury.
Bottom line
Moton’s injured-reserve placement is a significant loss, but the Panthers are not entering Week 8 without a plan. Freeling has four NFL starts and is the confirmed replacement. Fantasy managers should slightly lower Young’s ceiling, keep Hubbard in lineups for his volume and wait for Wednesday’s final injury report before making broader changes.
