Pat Surtain II Questionable vs. Cardinals: Broncos Coverage and Fantasy Impact

Information checked October 24, 2026 at 8:33 a.m. CT. The Denver Broncos injury report published October 23 still listed Pat Surtain II as questionable after limited participation in all three practices.

Pat Surtain II is officially questionable for Denver’s Week 7 road game against Arizona after the All-Pro cornerback was limited in all three practices this week. The designation keeps open a meaningful late-week decision for the Broncos’ secondary and for fantasy managers weighing the Cardinals’ passing game.

As of Saturday morning, Surtain has not played since Week 4. Denver won both games he missed, beating the Chargers and Seahawks, but the matchup calculus changes when the 2024 AP Defensive Player of the Year is available. The Broncos are 4-2, the Cardinals are 2-4, and kickoff is scheduled for Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CT on CBS.

What Surtain’s status means for Denver

The Broncos list Surtain as their starting left cornerback, with rookie Jahdae Barron behind him. Riley Moss, who was a full participant Friday and carries no game designation, starts on the opposite side. Ja’Quan McMillian holds the nickel role, while Kris Abrams-Draine supplies additional outside depth.

That structure gives Denver options, but the safety layer is already thinner because Talanoa Hufanga has been ruled out. If Surtain cannot go, Denver would be replacing a premier boundary defender while also adjusting behind him. That combination matters more than simply subtracting one cornerback: it can affect leverage calls, help assignments and how aggressively the Broncos pressure Jacoby Brissett.

Surtain has recorded 21 total tackles in his four appearances this season. His real impact is often less visible in the box score because quarterbacks can choose to avoid his side of the field. A return would let Denver use coverage help elsewhere and make Arizona work through a narrower set of favorable matchups.

The Arizona matchup by the numbers

Brissett has completed 156 of 234 passes for 1,328 yards, nine touchdowns and six interceptions. His 66.7 percent completion rate is respectable, but Arizona is averaging only 5.7 yards per pass attempt, and his passer rating is 83.4.

Tight end Trey McBride is the volume engine with 49 catches for 361 yards and three touchdowns. Michael Wilson has 33 receptions for 320 yards and one score, while Kendrick Bourne has 22 catches for 225 yards. Those totals point to a short-area offense that needs sustained execution rather than an attack built around frequent explosive plays.

Surtain’s availability would most directly affect Wilson and Bourne on the boundary. McBride is less likely to see Surtain as his primary matchup, but the tight end can still feel the indirect effect. If Denver can trust Surtain without consistent safety help, the Broncos can devote more resources to McBride in the middle of the field.

Fantasy football impact

• Trey McBride: Keep him locked into lineups. His target volume survives either outcome. Surtain being active would slightly lower the overall passing ceiling, not remove McBride’s TE1 value.

• Michael Wilson and Kendrick Bourne: Both are riskier flex plays if Surtain returns. If Surtain is inactive, each gets a modest efficiency bump, but neither becomes an automatic start in an offense averaging 5.7 yards per attempt.

• Jacoby Brissett: Best treated as a two-quarterback or superflex option. Surtain’s return would lower Brissett’s ceiling and raise the turnover risk; Surtain being out would improve the matchup without fixing Arizona’s limited explosiveness.

• Broncos D/ST: Surtain would be a clear upgrade and could move Denver up one tier in close lineup decisions. Hufanga’s absence prevents this from becoming a completely clean secondary outlook.

• IDP formats: Surtain is more valuable to Denver than to most tackle-heavy fantasy scoring systems. Cornerback-required leagues can consider him, but his weekly floor remains volatile because quarterbacks may avoid him.

Denver’s contingency plan if Surtain sits

Barron is the most natural candidate to absorb snaps at left corner, with Moss remaining on the right and McMillian inside. Abrams-Draine can enter if Denver prefers to move Barron through multiple alignments. At safety, Brandon Jones and JL Skinner become more important with Hufanga unavailable.

The key strategic question is whether defensive coordinator Vance Joseph can keep the coverage menu aggressive without both Surtain and Hufanga. A more conservative zone plan could reduce deep-ball exposure, but it would also invite Brissett to feed McBride and the underneath receivers. Extra pressure can speed up the quarterback, though it places more stress on replacement coverage.

What to watch before kickoff

The final answer will come with the inactive lists, which are normally released about 90 minutes before kickoff. Fantasy managers should check Surtain’s status around 1:35 p.m. CT rather than relying only on the questionable tag.

If Surtain is active, also watch for any report of a snap limit and how he moves during warmups. Returning from an ankle injury is not automatically the same as returning to a full shadow assignment. If he is inactive, the first defensive series should show whether Barron stays outside or whether Denver rotates its young corners by matchup.

Bottom line

Surtain’s questionable designation creates a real swing in the matchup, but it should not produce overreactions. Denver has already won two games without him, and Arizona’s passing offense has not been efficient enough to turn one absence into a full green light. If Surtain plays, downgrade the Cardinals’ outside receivers and give Denver D/ST a boost. If he sits, McBride remains the safest Arizona option, while Wilson and Bourne become slightly more usable but still matchup-dependent.
