Sean Rhyan and Travis Glover Miss Wednesday. Green Bay’s Protection Calls Face a Stress Test
Green Bay's first Week 9 practice report created a specific offensive problem, not a reason to panic. The Packers listed starting center Sean Rhyan as a nonparticipant because of an ankle injury and guard/tackle Travis Glover as a nonparticipant because of a knee injury. Left guard Aaron Banks was limited with a knee issue. Those are Wednesday participation labels, not Sunday game statuses, but they place three connected interior protection roles under review before the Packers visit New England.
The official Packers injury report was published Nov. 4 at 3:55 p.m. Central and rechecked by Football Nation on Nov. 5 at 8:15 a.m. Central. The Packers game center lists the road game for Sunday, Nov. 8 at 3:25 p.m. Central. Green Bay and New England both enter 5-3.

Why Rhyan's status changes more than one position
Green Bay's unofficial Nov. 3 depth chart lists Rhyan at center, Jager Burton behind him, Banks at left guard and Glover as a guard/tackle option. That layout explains why this is a communication question. The center has to identify the defensive front, set the protection point and coordinate the slide with both guards. A replacement can execute the snap correctly and still create leakage if the five blockers do not use the same count when a tackle and end exchange gaps.
That responsibility is not theoretical for Rhyan. In June, the Packers described how he took control of the calls after moving to center during the second half of 2025. The team credited his progress in getting the offense set, and Green Bay's current player page lists six starts in six appearances in 2026. Losing that voice, even temporarily, would require the quarterback and guards to carry more of the pre-snap confirmation.

One protection language should survive every lineup
The safest response is not to install a different answer for every possible combination. Green Bay should keep one identification language and reduce the number of exceptions. The center declares the key linebacker. The guards echo the slide and the count. When two rushers cross, adjacent linemen exchange them with their eyes and shoulders rather than chasing color across the formation. The teaching graphic shows that sequence in a conceptual five man protection.
Plan A is Rhyan returning and handling his normal calls. Plan B is Burton or another practiced center using the same vocabulary with extra confirmation from Jordan Love. Plan C is the emergency path Green Bay has already lived. When Rhyan and Jacob Monk were injured in the same series against Detroit, John Williams entered at center. The Packers later reported that Love built walk through repetitions with Williams before the short week game against Carolina. That experience does not make another change harmless, but it gives the staff a real reference for how much menu reduction and sideline support a replacement needs.
The surrounding guards matter just as much. If Glover cannot play and Banks remains limited, the Packers may be choosing between continuity and availability at more than one spot. The goal should be the best connected five, not simply the five most recognizable names. Football Nation's New England pressure analysis explains why twist recognition is the matchup issue to monitor. Green Bay's answer starts before the rush, with a call every blocker understands.
Fantasy consequence: raise the volatility, not the certainty
For fantasy managers, this report is a reason to monitor rather than bench Packers automatically. Josh Jacobs remains the lead back on the current depth chart, but multiple interior changes would make early down run efficiency less stable because combination blocks and second level timing depend on synchronized footwork. Jordan Love would face a similar range of outcomes. Clear calls can preserve a clean pocket even with a substitute. One missed exchange can create immediate interior pressure and shorten the route tree.
The practical approach is format neutral. Do not change a projection from a Wednesday label alone. If Rhyan advances to limited or full participation Thursday, the communication risk falls. If he remains out and Glover also remains out, managers should account for a wider distribution of outcomes for both the run game and downfield passing. That is risk management, not a prediction of failure.
The strongest counterargument
The most important counterargument is timing. Wednesday is the first injury report of the week, and veterans or recently injured players can move from no practice to meaningful availability before Sunday. Banks was already limited rather than absent. The Packers also have reserve linemen who have taken real center or guard repetitions. It would be wrong to treat the first report as a final lineup, and it would be equally wrong to ignore the communication work required if two adjacent jobs change.
This analysis also should not be confused with yesterday's Savion Williams hybrid role study. That article examined how Green Bay can expand one skill player's usage. Today's issue is the operating system in front of Love: who makes the protection call, who echoes it and how the unit handles movement.
Next checkpoint
Thursday's participation report is the next evidence point. Friday's report and game designations will define the final decision window. The most useful signs are whether Rhyan takes any team work, whether Glover progresses from no practice and whether Banks can increase his workload without a setback. Until then, the honest conclusion is conditional: Green Bay has workable contingency paths, but the paths need one language and enough shared repetitions.
