Star Wars Funday Football Coming to Super Bowl LXI: How to Watch

Super Bowl LXI will offer a new way to watch football’s biggest game: a live animated alternate telecast set in the Star Wars galaxy. ESPN, Lucasfilm, Disney and the NFL announced Star Wars Funday Football for Sunday, February 14, 2027, alongside the traditional Super Bowl broadcast.

The alternate presentation will recreate the actual game in real time, turning the AFC and NFC champions into animated avatars while Star Wars characters and story elements appear around the action. It is an additional viewing option—not a replacement for the standard telecast.

Super Bowl LXI Star Wars telecast: U.S. viewing options

In the United States, Star Wars Funday Football is scheduled to stream live on Disney+ and the ESPN App. It will also air on Disney Channel and Disney XD. ESPN has not yet announced a separate kickoff time for the animated feed, so viewers should expect it to follow the Super Bowl LXI game window unless later programming details say otherwise.

Fans who want the conventional game broadcast will still have it. The traditional English-language telecast from SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, is scheduled for ESPN, ABC and Disney+, with Joe Buck, Troy Aikman, Lisa Salters and Laura Rutledge on the announced broadcast team.

Spanish-language options are also planned. ESPN says its Spanish telecast will be available on Disney+ and ESPN Deportes, while Univision will carry a separate Spanish-language presentation.

How the animated Super Bowl feed will work

This is not a prerecorded cartoon or a simplified replay. ESPN says the production will transform the live game into animation using the NFL’s Next Gen Stats player-tracking data and Sony Hawk-Eye Innovations optical tracking. Sony’s Beyond Sports technology will then map the real players and ball movement into the animated environment.

That means the down, distance, routes and results should follow the actual Super Bowl in real time. The creative layer will add character appearances, substitutions during selected moments and visual Easter eggs. Anthony Daniels is scheduled to return as the voice of C-3PO.

For football-focused viewers, the important distinction is that the underlying competition remains the same. The feed changes the presentation, not the rules, score or on-field action. It should be especially useful for families who want a more playful introduction to the game while another screen carries the traditional broadcast.

Why this is an NFL broadcasting milestone

Star Wars Funday Football will be the first animated alternate presentation of a Super Bowl. It is the fourth event in ESPN’s Funday Football series, following the Toy Story presentation of Falcons-Jaguars in 2023, The Simpsons version of Bengals-Cowboys in 2024 and Monsters Funday Football for Eagles-Chargers in 2025.

The scale is also larger than the earlier regular-season experiments. ESPN and the NFL are pairing the animated feed with several other Super Bowl options: a Peyton and Eli presentation on ESPN2, Field Pass with The Pat McAfee Show on ESPNU and a Playbook with Next Gen Stats feed on NFL Network. The approach gives viewers a menu of formats built around the same live game.

International availability

ESPN says the animated telecast will be offered live in markets including Latin America, the Caribbean, Australia and New Zealand, Canada through TSN+, the Netherlands, sub-Saharan Africa, Japan, Sweden, Singapore, Malaysia and the Philippines. On-demand availability is planned for additional countries after the live game, bringing the announced reach to more than 155 markets.

Exact platform access can vary by country and subscription. International viewers should check their local Disney+, ESPN or partner listings closer to February 14, 2027 rather than assuming the U.S. channel lineup applies everywhere.

What has not been announced

Several production details remain open. ESPN has not yet named the animated telecast’s commentators, fully revealed the setting or published the complete character lineup. Those are expected closer to the game. The participating teams will not be known until the AFC and NFC championship games.

Viewers should also avoid treating every announced platform as interchangeable. Disney+ will carry both the traditional game and the animated alternate feed in the United States, while the ESPN App, Disney Channel and Disney XD are specifically listed for Star Wars Funday Football. Subscription and authentication requirements may differ.

Football Nation takeaway

The practical news is simple: Super Bowl LXI will have a family-friendly, real-time animated option on February 14, 2027, while the normal broadcast remains widely available. The production is ambitious because it applies player-tracking animation to the Super Bowl for the first time, but fans do not need to choose between authenticity and spectacle—the same live game sits underneath both presentations.
