2026 NFL Week 1 · Final: Atlanta Falcons 13, Pittsburgh Steelers 20. Official team coverage · AP game report

Watt supplied the thunder

Pittsburgh's offense did not spend the opener overwhelming Atlanta. T.J. Watt did. The Steelers star recorded two sacks and returned an interception 35 yards for a touchdown in a 20 to 13 win that gave Mike McCarthy a successful start as Pittsburgh's head coach. When the game needed a decisive play, Watt turned a short passing opportunity into seven points the other way.

Atlanta had its own exceptional individual performance. Bijan Robinson produced 173 scrimmage yards and the Falcons' only touchdown. The difference was that Pittsburgh's biggest contribution changed possession and the scoreboard at once, while Robinson spent the afternoon trying to carry an offense that struggled to find enough help.

The play that broke the stalemate

The Steelers led 13 to 10 early in the fourth quarter when Watt intercepted Cooper Rush and raced to the end zone. The return stretched the lead to 20 to 10 with 14:05 left. Atlanta could still make it a one possession game, but it now needed to produce something its offense had rarely managed: a complete touchdown drive.

After the Falcons cut the margin to seven, Pittsburgh took over with 4:16 remaining and never returned the football. Aaron Rodgers found DK Metcalf, Michael Pittman Jr. and Darnell Washington during the closing possession. Watt created the advantage, and the offense finally supplied the sequence needed to protect it.

A narrow yardage margin, a huge mistake margin

Pittsburgh gained 264 yards to Atlanta's 238. This was not a game in which the winner consistently marched the length of the field. The Steelers ran for only 58 yards, and Rodgers averaged 5.5 gross passing yards per attempt. The offense still has substantial room to become more efficient.

Atlanta's passing game was under pressure. Rush completed 12 of 22 attempts for 143 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while taking four sacks. The Falcons also committed 96 yards in penalties. Add two missed Nick Folk field goals, and Atlanta repeatedly increased the difficulty of staying within reach.

Bijan was almost the entire attack

Robinson ran 21 times for 83 yards and caught eight passes for 90. His 173 scrimmage yards represented about 73 percent of Atlanta's 238 net offensive yards. That comparison mixes individual scrimmage production with a team total reduced by sacks, but it still illustrates just how concentrated the Falcons' effective offense became.

Drake London caught two passes for 29 yards, while Kyle Pitts had one reception for five. Pittsburgh's Pat Freiermuth caught all five targets for 46 yards and a touchdown. Pittman added 58 yards on three receptions. Metcalf drew 10 targets but caught four for 40, leaving a clear opportunity for improvement in the passing connection.

Fantasy volume separates the winners and concerns

Robinson's 29 combined carries and catches are the most important fantasy signal here. He remained productive even with Atlanta's quarterback disruption and limited passing support. London and Pitts require a closer look at the offense's ability to create usable targets rather than a simple reaction to one poor box score.

Jaylen Warren had 10 carries for 46 yards, compared with Rico Dowdle's eight for 15. The rushing split matters because Pittsburgh did not produce enough ground volume for both to thrive on rushing work alone. Freiermuth's five catches on five targets were efficient, but one touchdown does not by itself prove a lasting increase in weekly target share.

Atlanta loses Da’Shawn Hand for the season

The Falcons placed Da’Shawn Hand on injured reserve with a season-ending quadriceps injury. Hand was injured during the 20–13 loss and logged only seven defensive snaps without a tackle, so this does not rewrite the result or create a large fantasy swing. It does remove an experienced interior rotational option. Atlanta promoted tight end Nick Muse and signed defensive end Drake Jackson and running back Khalil Herbert to the practice squad. The Week 2 injury tracker will monitor whether the defensive-line rotation produces a larger availability change.

Football Nation verdict

The Steelers won because their defense supplied a touchdown and their offense protected the final possession. That is a legitimate route to victory, but Pittsburgh will want more than 264 yards as the season develops. Atlanta needs a passing game that gives Robinson support and a cleaner afternoon on special teams. The Falcons host Carolina next, and Pittsburgh visits New England. Both teams should leave this game valuing their standout performances without overlooking the offensive work still required.
