Steelers Sign Marquez Valdes-Scantling: Week 7 Fantasy Impact

The Pittsburgh Steelers are bringing back a familiar vertical target. The team signed veteran wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to its practice squad on Tuesday, October 20, giving Aaron Rodgers another experienced option while Pittsburgh works through a depleted receiver room.

The official Steelers announcement lists Valdes-Scantling as a practice-squad signing, an important distinction for fantasy managers: he is not automatically on the Week 7 game-day roster. Pittsburgh would need to sign him to the 53-man roster or elevate him before he can play against New Orleans in Paris.

What Pittsburgh is adding

Valdes-Scantling, 32, is a field-stretching specialist whose value has historically come from creating explosive plays rather than commanding heavy target volume. He appeared in three games for the Los Angeles Chargers earlier this season and caught two passes for 22 yards before returning to Pittsburgh.

His 2025 Steelers résumé was modest but useful: 10 receptions for 80 yards and one touchdown across five regular-season games, including one start. He also caught three passes in Pittsburgh's playoff loss, evidence that the coaching staff was willing to use him in meaningful situations.

The appeal is role-specific. At 6-foot-4 with proven vertical speed, Valdes-Scantling can occupy a deep safety, threaten outside leverage and clear space underneath. That can matter even on snaps when the ball does not go his way.

Why the move matters now

Pittsburgh entered Week 6 with significant receiver attrition. The team's official Week 6 update said Michael Pittman Jr. had been placed on injured reserve, while Roman Wilson and Ben Skowronek were ruled out for that game. Those injuries do not guarantee Valdes-Scantling an immediate role, but they explain why the Steelers needed experienced depth.

DK Metcalf remains the clear top outside receiver, and rookie Germie Bernard has the stronger near-term fantasy profile because he is already part of the active rotation. Valdes-Scantling is more likely to begin as insurance and a package player than as a full-time starter.

There is still a useful familiarity angle. Rodgers and Valdes-Scantling overlapped for four seasons in Green Bay, and they connected for a 19-yard touchdown during the receiver's first Steelers stint in 2025. That shared language can shorten the installation process, especially for alerts, scramble rules and deep-route adjustments. It does not, however, create guaranteed targets.

Week 7 fantasy football impact

  • Marquez Valdes-Scantling: Watch-list option only in standard redraft leagues. Do not spend meaningful waiver priority unless Pittsburgh promotes or elevates him and signals a real route share.

  • DK Metcalf: Still the Steelers receiver to start. Valdes-Scantling's arrival is more likely to help spacing than take high-value volume away from Metcalf.

  • Germie Bernard: Remains the more rosterable secondary Pittsburgh receiver because he already has an active role. His value would change only if practice participation and snap projections point toward a major reshuffle.

  • Aaron Rodgers: The signing adds a potential deep-ball complement but is not enough by itself to change his Week 7 ranking. Treat any boost as marginal until Valdes-Scantling is active.

  • Best ball and large-field DFS: If elevated, Valdes-Scantling would be a low-floor, touchdown-dependent tournament dart rather than a cash-game play.

The cleanest fantasy approach is to separate roster news from lineup news. A practice-squad signing improves organizational depth, but fantasy value begins only when the player is active and running routes. Managers in deep formats can reserve a bench spot if the cost is negligible; everyone else can wait for confirmation.

What to monitor before Steelers-Saints

  • Whether Pittsburgh elevates Valdes-Scantling from the practice squad before game day.

  • The practice participation and final status of Skowronek and the rest of the Steelers' available receivers.

  • Any indication that Valdes-Scantling is working with Rodgers in a defined package rather than only providing scout-team depth.

  • The final inactive list, which will settle whether he can contribute in Paris.

For broader context, Football Nation USA's Paris game guide tracks the international matchup, while the Week 7 injury report covers the league's major availability questions.

Bottom line

Valdes-Scantling gives Pittsburgh a familiar, low-cost answer to a short-handed receiver room and gives Rodgers another player who understands how to win vertically. For fantasy football, the move is a monitor—not a mandate. Wait for an elevation and a credible route projection before treating him as anything more than a speculative deep-league stash.
