Teven Jenkins Lands on IR: Browns O-Line Faces Jeffery Simmons Test
Cleveland made Teven Jenkins’ extended absence official Saturday, placing the veteran guard on injured reserve because of the back injury that has kept him out all season. The move does not change the Week 7 starter at right guard, but it removes the possibility of a quick return and reinforces how much the Browns are relying on rookie Austin Barber.
This report reflects official information available through 12:05 p.m. Central on October 24, 2026.
What the Browns announced
The Browns placed Jenkins on injured reserve while activating running back Dylan Sampson from injured reserve and elevating defensive tackle Sam Kamara from the practice squad for Sunday’s game at Tennessee. Cleveland also said safety Grant Delpit cleared concussion protocol and has no game status.
Jenkins did not practice Wednesday, Thursday or Friday and had already been ruled out. The team’s final injury report said the Tennessee game would be his seventh consecutive absence with the back injury he sustained during the first week of the regular season.
Austin Barber remains the answer at right guard
Cleveland’s Week 7 unofficial depth chart lists Barber as the first-team right guard and Jenkins as injured. Barber, the No. 86 pick in the 2026 draft, stepped into the job when Jenkins was ruled out before the opener and has remained there.
The rookie earned the opportunity with a strong debut. In Cleveland’s own review of the opener, Barber received an 83.2 pass-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, second among the Browns’ offensive linemen in that game. Saturday’s transaction therefore formalizes an arrangement Cleveland has already lived with for six weeks; it is not a last-minute lineup scramble.
Why the timing matters against Jeffery Simmons
The timing is important because Tennessee’s best defensive player works inside. Jeffery Simmons has four sacks and six tackles for loss through six games, according to the Browns’ official matchup preview. That report also credited him with 21 total pressures, fifth among interior defensive linemen entering Week 7.
Simmons was especially disruptive in Tennessee’s Week 6 win over Indianapolis. The Titans said he generated seven pressures and two sacks, including four pressures and both sacks while facing double teams. Cleveland cannot treat him as a problem that belongs to one guard because Tennessee moves him across the front.
That puts Barber, left guard Zion Johnson and center Elgton Jenkins at the center of Cleveland’s protection plan. The Browns may turn protections toward Simmons when the front allows it, but their own coaches have noted that interior rushers are harder to chip than edge defenders.
Fantasy football and game impact
For fantasy managers, the Jenkins transaction is not a reason by itself to bench Cleveland’s core options. Barber has already been the starter, so the Week 7 offensive line is not suddenly losing an active player. The more useful takeaway is that the existing interior matchup remains one of the biggest risks for quarterback Deshaun Watson and the Browns’ running game.
Pressure up the middle can shorten dropbacks and create more quick targets for tight end Harold Fannin Jr. and Cleveland’s underneath receivers. It can also disrupt the timing of inside-zone and gap runs before they develop. Quinshon Judkins remains the backfield’s primary fantasy option, while Sampson’s activation adds another available runner but does not guarantee a large role in his first game back.
Tennessee’s defense has sack upside in deeper fantasy formats after producing six sacks last week. Still, the Browns have had a full week to prepare with Barber as the expected starter, so managers should treat the matchup as a modest downgrade rather than a surprise injury crisis.
What to watch Sunday
The first checkpoint is where Simmons aligns on early passing downs. If Tennessee repeatedly places him over Barber or in the guard-center gap, Cleveland’s help rules will become clear quickly. The second is whether the Browns stay efficient enough on early downs to avoid obvious third-and-long situations.
Jenkins’ move to injured reserve makes Cleveland’s offensive-line plan simpler but thinner: Barber owns the right-guard job, and the Browns must protect him with cohesion rather than a late personnel change. Against a disruptive interior defender coming off his best pressure game of the season, that will be one of the defining matchups in Nashville.
