The Titans did not maintain that touchdown pace, but Slye prevented empty possessions by repeatedly converting from long distance. San Francisco's best offensive development came from Kurtis Rourke. He completed 12 of 14 passes for 101 yards before leaving with a rib injury after a scramble. Initial X rays did not show a fracture, but he was taken to the hospital as a precaution after experiencing breathing discomfort. Adrian Martinez replaced him and completed 16 of 30 passes for 159 yards.

Numbers that mattered

Slye made four field goals and converted three from more than 50 yards. Chestnut averaged more than nine yards per carry on his five attempts. Rourke completed more than 85 percent of his passes before the injury. Rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling became San Francisco's most consistent target, catching seven passes for 63 yards. The 49ers moved the ball in stretches but did not finish enough drives. Tennessee's defense had coverage lapses, yet it tightened in scoring territory and forced San Francisco to chase the game late.

Roster stock

Ward's stock did not depend on the completion percentage. The opening drive showed command, patience and the ability to recover from poor field position. The next step is sustaining that level after the scripted opening sequence ends. Chestnut helped his case as the third back because 47 yards on five carries is efficient production, while Slye created a strong argument for trust in any close game that reaches midfield. Stribling was San Francisco's biggest winner. Seven catches in a debut indicate that he can separate, adjust and remain involved across different quarterback styles. That matters for a 49ers receiver room dealing with injuries. Rourke also looked capable of competing for a reserve role before the injury. His health now becomes more important than any additional preseason evaluation.

Season projection after the opener

Football Nation projects Tennessee to be more competitive than last season's three win team, but the Titans still look like a rebuilding roster rather than a playoff favorite. Ward gives the franchise a foundation, and the Pollard, Spears and Chestnut backfield can keep him out of obvious passing situations. The defense must eliminate the coverage busts before the regular season. A strong kicker gives the rebuild a better chance to convert close games into wins. San Francisco remains an NFC contender if its starters are healthy. The opener did not change that ceiling because Brock Purdy and most established stars did not carry the workload. It did reinforce the central risk around the roster: injuries can quickly test young depth. Stribling projects as a real rotational receiver. Rourke's injury and the other defensive injuries make the next medical updates more important than the loss.

Bottom line

Tennessee received one excellent drive from Ward, enough rushing support to stay balanced and four field goals from Slye. That formula was sufficient for a preseason win and offers a realistic blueprint for a young regular season offense. San Francisco found a receiver in Stribling and promising quarterback work from Rourke, but the injury list grew again. The Titans left with a clearer identity. The 49ers left needing healthier depth.
