Why Do NFL Teams Ice the Kicker? Does It Actually Work?

NFL teams ice the kicker by calling a timeout immediately before an opponent’s important field-goal attempt. The goal is to interrupt the snap-hold-kick routine, create another wait and make the kicker execute under pressure again. It is a legal tactic when the team has a timeout and officials grant it before the snap—but research does not support calling it a guaranteed way to cause a miss.


The clearest answer is that icing definitely changes the process and may change the result, but the size and reliability of any performance effect remain uncertain. Two recent peer-reviewed analyses reached different conclusions, which is exactly why a coach’s timeout should not be described as magic.


What does “icing the kicker” mean?


Icing is football shorthand, not a separate scoring rule. The defending coach waits until the field-goal unit is set, then requests a charged team timeout as late as legally possible. Under the 2026 NFL Rulebook, each team ordinarily receives three charged timeouts per half. The late request is intended to break the operation’s rhythm without allowing the kick to become a live play.


A field goal depends on coordinated timing among the snapper, holder and kicker. The timeout makes that unit leave its ready state, wait through the stoppage, then rebuild the sequence. That is the real, confirmed effect. Whether the interruption lowers the probability of a successful kick is a separate question.

What happens when the timeout is called?


First, the coach or an eligible player requests the timeout. The official must recognize and grant it while the ball is still dead. Once granted, the snap cannot begin a scoring play. Players sometimes continue through the motion because they did not hear the whistle, but that practice kick has no score attached to it.


After the timeout, the ball is made ready again and the play clock controls the restart. The snapper, holder and kicker must perform a new operation. The next live-ball attempt—not the kick seen after a dead-ball whistle—is the one that counts. This resembles the basic clock logic behind a quarterback spike: timing changes strategy, but the down only has legal consequences when the ball is live.


The broadcast can make the sequence look backward because the timeout signal, whistle and snap may be nearly simultaneous. The next factual checkpoint is the referee’s ruling. If the timeout was granted before the snap, the ball remained dead. If the play legally started first, a late request cannot retroactively erase a live kick.


Can an NFL team ice the kicker twice?


Not in the same dead-ball period. The NFL’s official non-football act rule specifically covers attempts to use an excess or illegal timeout to freeze a kicker before a field goal or Try. A team may not request another timeout for that purpose after it has already been charged one during the same dead-ball period, and it may not try the tactic after exhausting its three timeouts in the half.


Officials are instructed not to grant that illegal request, play continues, and a 15-yard unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty is enforced after the down. If officials inadvertently grant it, the foul is administered as a dead-ball foul. So “double icing” is not a free second interruption; the rule is written to stop repeated freezes.


Does icing the kicker actually work?


The best honest answer is that the evidence is disputed. A 2024 analysis in CHANCE emphasized that coaches do not choose icing situations randomly. After using a causal-inference approach, the authors reported no evidence of a meaningful effect and argued that some timeouts could have greater value earlier in a game.


A separate 2025 report in the Journal of Applied Sport Psychology examined pressure kicks across 25 NFL seasons from 1999 through 2024. Its model found that icing was associated with reduced scoring. However, a secondary analysis of a smaller set of nullified first kicks did not find significant deterioration on the immediate second attempt, leaving the mechanism unsettled.

These findings are not necessarily contradictory in a simple “one study is right” sense. Researchers must define a pressure kick, account for distance and kicker ability, and deal with selection bias: coaches are more likely to ice certain high-leverage attempts than ordinary kicks. Different samples and methods can therefore produce different estimates. The studies support caution, not a universal percentage that applies to every kicker and distance.


Why do coaches keep doing it?


Late in a close game, a timeout may have little value after the kick. If the coach cannot carry it into the locker room, even a small possible edge can seem worth buying. The stoppage also gives the rush unit time to review alignment and lets the defense control the emotional pace of the moment.


The tradeoff is real. If time remains, that timeout could be needed for a final possession, especially near the two-minute warning or in an overtime sequence. It can also give the kicking unit more time to check wind, footing and protection. A kicker who completes a dead-ball practice attempt may even receive information about the surface and ball flight. That does not mean icing backfired—the practice kick did not count—but it shows why an interruption can help as well as hurt. The strategy changes the environment for both teams.


The biggest misconception


Fans often treat the first kick after the whistle as a made or missed field goal that was “taken away.” It was neither. Once the timeout was legally granted before the snap, the ball was dead, so the action had no scoring value. Only the next live attempt belongs in the game record.


Icing also does not change protection rules. The defense must still avoid roughing the kicker, and the kicking team still needs a clean snap and hold.
