2026 NFL Training Camp Injury Report: Panthers Hit Hard Before Hall of Fame Game

Updated: 11 hours ago

The NFL preseason opens Thursday night, but the biggest story around the Carolina Panthers is not the scoreboard. It is the growing list of injuries the reigning NFC South champions are carrying into Canton.

Carolina faces the Arizona Cardinals in the 2026 Pro Football Hall of Fame Game on Thursday, August 6, at 8 p.m. ET. The matchup officially begins the preseason and celebrates Panthers legend Luke Kuechly and Cardinals icon Larry Fitzgerald, both members of the 2026 Hall of Fame class. Check Football Nation’s broadcast schedule for live coverage.

The game itself will be useful for evaluating young players and roster depth. For fantasy managers, however, the more important questions are already forming around Carolina’s offensive line, backfield and passing game.

Panthers lose Nic Scourton for the season

Second-year outside linebacker Nic Scourton suffered a torn ACL during Carolina’s first training camp practice. The Panthers placed him on injured reserve the following day, ending his 2026 season before the preseason began.

Scourton tied for the team lead with 5.0 sacks as a rookie and was expected to take a major step alongside free-agent addition Jaelan Phillips. Carolina brought back Cam Gill after the injury. Gill was named the UFL Defensive Player of the Year after setting a league record with 10 sacks, but replacing Scourton’s projected role will likely require a rotation rather than one direct substitute.

The immediate fantasy impact is mostly defensive. Carolina’s team defense loses a young pass rusher who could have helped create more pressure and turnovers. That does not make the Panthers D/ST undraftable, but it lowers the unit’s early-season ceiling and makes matchup-based streaming more appealing than treating Carolina as an every-week starter.

Carolina’s offensive line is the bigger fantasy concern

Right tackle Taylor Moton was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung in late June. He is receiving treatment with blood thinners and is expected to miss regular-season time, although the Panthers believe he can return during the season.

Left tackle Ikem Ekwonu is also recovering from a torn patellar tendon suffered in Carolina’s playoff loss. Head coach Dave Canales described that injury as a nine-to-12-month rehabilitation. That leaves the Panthers preparing for the possibility of opening the season without both established starting tackles.

Veteran Rasheed Walker and first-round rookie Monroe Freeling give Carolina options, but the uncertainty matters for fantasy football. Bryce Young showed meaningful growth last season, and Tetairoa McMillan is coming off an Offensive Rookie of the Year campaign. Still, protection issues can reduce deep passing opportunities, force quicker throws and make an offense less consistent near the goal line.

The same concern applies to the running game. Chuba Hubbard and Jonathon Brooks remain interesting fantasy options, but offensive-line health should be part of every draft-day evaluation. A talented back can overcome average blocking. It is much harder to overcome constant changes at both tackle spots.

There is positive Panthers injury news

Cornerback Jaycee Horn has already been activated from the non-football injury list after recovering from a cut on his foot that required stitches. Carolina also reported that McMillan was cleared for full participation after being limited during offseason work.

Brooks has produced encouraging moments in padded practice as he works back into the offense. Fantasy managers should view those reports as a positive sign, not proof that the workload has already shifted. The Hall of Fame Game and the rest of the preseason should provide a clearer look at how Carolina plans to divide touches.

Tyreek Hill rumors need a reality check

Free-agent wide receiver Tyreek Hill continues to generate speculation because any healthy version of Hill would immediately change an NFL offense. The current medical update, however, is a reminder not to draft the name instead of the situation.

Hill said he feels good and shared video of his rehabilitation, but he also acknowledged that he still has no power in his injured left leg after two surgeries. He has not announced a return timetable and remains unsigned.

For standard redraft leagues, Hill should be treated as a late speculative stash at most until there is a team, a medical clearance and a realistic return window. Rumored landing spots are not the same thing as usable fantasy value.

What to watch in the Hall of Fame Game

  • Carolina’s tackle rotation: Watch where Freeling and Walker line up and how the backup quarterbacks handle pressure.

  • The Panthers’ backfield: Any work for Brooks will matter, but snap quality and pass-protection assignments may tell us more than raw rushing totals.

  • The replacement pass rush: Gill, Patrick Jones II and the rest of the edge group have an early chance to show how Carolina will replace Scourton.

  • Arizona’s new offense: The Cardinals begin the Mike LaFleur era with a fourth preseason game, giving the coaching staff extra evaluation time before roster cuts.

The first preseason game will not answer every fantasy question, and most established stars may see limited or no action. What it can reveal is which younger players are trusted, which position battles are real and where injuries have changed the depth chart.

Football Nation will continue tracking NFL training camp injuries, fantasy movement and major roster news throughout the preseason.
