The 2026 NFL preseason opens Thursday, August 6, when the Arizona Cardinals host the Carolina Panthers in Canton. The final score will matter less than player evaluation, but this game carries unusual historical significance because Larry Fitzgerald and Luke Kuechly headline a Hall of Fame class closely connected to both franchises.

Kickoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. Eastern and 7 p.m. Central at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. NBC and Peacock will carry the game. The announced broadcast team is Mike Tirico on play-by-play, Cris Collinsworth as analyst, Melissa Stark on the sideline and Terry McAulay as rules analyst.
Arizona is the designated home team. Because the Cardinals and Panthers are participating in the Hall of Fame Game, each will play four preseason games while the other 30 teams play three.
The Hall of Fame connection
Larry Fitzgerald and Luke Kuechly will be recognized during pregame activities along with Drew Brees, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri. The five members of the Class of 2026 are scheduled to receive their Gold Jackets on Friday, August 7, before the enshrinement ceremony on Saturday, August 8.
Fitzgerald spent his entire career with Arizona, and Kuechly played his entire career with Carolina. Their presence gives the exhibition a stronger connection to the weekend than a typical preseason opener.
Where the teams stand entering 2026
The Cardinals begin a new era under first-year head coach Mike LaFleur. Arizona’s offense is built around first-team All-Pro tight end Trey McBride, whose 126 receptions in 2025 established an NFL single-season record for a tight end. Eight-time Pro Bowl safety Budda Baker remains the veteran leader of the defense.
Carolina enters Dave Canales’ third season after finishing 8-9, winning the NFC South and losing a 34-31 home playoff game to the Rams. Bryce Young passed for more than 3,000 yards and 23 touchdowns in 2025. Seven of those scores went to Tetairoa McMillan, who was named the AP Offensive Rookie of the Year.
The teams met in Week 2 last season. Arizona built a 27-3 lead before Carolina rallied, but the Cardinals held on for a 27-22 victory. That result will have little direct impact on this exhibition, although it gives both staffs recent film against many of the same core players.
Five battles that matter
1. Arizona’s new offensive system
LaFleur’s first game will offer an early look at formations, personnel groupings and terminology. Coaches will keep the plan basic, but the pace of the offense and the way Arizona uses McBride and its young receivers can reveal the foundation of the new system.
2. Carolina’s offensive tackle depth
The Panthers opened camp without starting tackles Ikem Ekwonu and Taylor Moton. Ekwonu is recovering from a torn patellar tendon, while Moton is unavailable for contact as he receives treatment for a blood clot. Rasheed Walker, first-round rookie Monroe Freeling and the reserve tackles need game reps, making this one of Carolina’s most important evaluations.
3. The Panthers’ pass-rush rotation
Nic Scourton was placed on injured reserve after a right knee injury on the first day of camp. He tied for the team lead with 5.0 sacks in 2025. The Hall of Fame Game gives Cam Gill and the other reserve edge defenders an immediate chance to show whether Carolina can replace those snaps with a deeper rotation.
4. Jonathon Brooks and the young skill players
Brooks has returned after back-to-back ACL injuries and looked explosive in his first padded practice. The Panthers still have Chuba Hubbard established at the top of the backfield, so Brooks’ workload, pass protection and receiving work will be worth tracking. Rookie receiver Chris Brazzell II is another player to watch if his knee soreness allows him to play.
5. Special teams and final roster spots
The Hall of Fame Game creates an extra evaluation opportunity. Backup defensive backs, linebackers, receivers and running backs can separate themselves through kickoff coverage, punt protection and return work. A player who receives only a handful of offensive or defensive snaps can still improve his roster chances with a mistake-free night on special teams.
Canton history for both franchises
This is Arizona’s sixth Hall of Fame Game appearance. The franchise is 1-3-1 in its previous five trips and participated in the first Hall of Fame Game in 1962, tying the New York Giants 21-21. Carolina’s only previous appearance came during its inaugural 1995 season, when the Panthers defeated fellow expansion franchise Jacksonville 20-14.
Expect limited work from established starters and a heavy emphasis on young players. The best information will come from roles, snap distribution, communication and individual matchups rather than the final score.
