49ers Elevate Okoronkwo, Graham With Nick Bosa Out
The San Francisco 49ers elevated defensive lineman Ogbo Okoronkwo and linebacker Jalen Graham from the practice squad for Sunday’s Week 7 game at Atlanta, a pair of temporary moves that directly address a depleted defensive front seven.
San Francisco announced the elevations Saturday, October 24. The club also signed Okoronkwo back to the practice squad, released defensive lineman Kevin Givens from that unit and activated wide receiver Christian Kirk from injured reserve. Kirk’s return is a separate offensive development; the immediate defensive story is why Okoronkwo and Graham are needed.
Why the 49ers needed both elevations
The 49ers ruled out six players Friday, including edge defender Nick Bosa with knee and calf injuries, linebacker Luke Gifford with a groin injury and linebacker Garret Wallow with a hamstring injury. That removes a premier pass rusher and two linebacker options from the Week 7 rotation.
Okoronkwo supplies experienced edge depth. NBC Sports reported that the 31-year-old appeared in each of San Francisco’s first six games, started once and recorded two tackles and a sack. Graham gives the defense another linebacker and special-teams option; the official transaction log also shows he was elevated for the Week 6 win over Washington.
These are standard practice-squad elevations, so neither move should be read as a permanent 53-man-roster promotion. Both players are eligible for the Atlanta game and then can revert to the practice squad after the game under the elevation rules.
Matchup impact against Atlanta
Okoronkwo’s clearest job is to help absorb edge snaps that would otherwise concentrate on a shortened rotation without Bosa. The elevation does not replace Bosa’s individual pressure or the attention he commands, but it gives the 49ers another veteran body for early downs and pass-rush packages.
Graham’s value is flexibility. With Gifford and Wallow unavailable, San Francisco needs depth behind its healthy linebackers and on coverage units. His activation protects the defense against fatigue and gives the coaching staff another option if the Falcons force extended drives.
The 49ers enter the game 6-0, while Atlanta is 2-4. San Francisco can still win with its healthier core, but the absence list makes rotation management more important than usual. The elevations are best viewed as floor-raising moves, not evidence that the defense will operate at full strength.
Fantasy football and IDP takeaway
For conventional fantasy leagues, neither Okoronkwo nor Graham should be started based on the elevation alone. A game-day roster spot does not guarantee enough snaps or tackles to create a dependable individual defensive player floor.
The more relevant fantasy call is the 49ers team defense. San Francisco remains usable, but Bosa’s absence lowers the sack ceiling and creates more uncertainty than the team’s 6-0 record suggests. Managers choosing between comparable streaming defenses should treat the elevations as depth insurance, not as a full replacement for the missing starters.
Atlanta’s skill players do not receive an automatic upgrade solely because of these moves, either. The final inactive list and early snap distribution will matter more. Watch whether Okoronkwo joins the primary edge rotation and whether Graham appears mainly on special teams or receives defensive work.
What to watch before kickoff
The official inactives will confirm the rest of San Francisco’s game-day plan. The most useful early clues will be Okoronkwo’s share of edge snaps, Graham’s defensive usage and whether the 49ers can generate pressure without blitzing heavily. If Atlanta’s protection holds, Bosa’s absence could become the defining defensive variable.
